I cant really recommend this pub unless you are looking for some kind of social experiment - its like a scene from a movie when you walk in - everybody stops and stares at you for a few moments and the staff have a very "your not from these parts are you son" vibe to them. If you are thinking of stopping in for a friendly pint - dont
Just loved this friendly historic Hotel. Rooms and bathrooms spotlessly clean with a great breakfast available 24hrs. What service. And the added bonus of the wall art view outside our window. Would definitely be back. Thanks
We stayed here the night of May 7th 2021. Was up graded to a better room. A few drinks in the bar, along with oysters and Blue cod and chips. Shared bathroom and toilet, squeaky floor boards. Comfortable clean rooms, good breakfast. Good over night stay before catching ferry to Stewart Island.
Clean, comfy hotel rooms and bathrooms. Friendly staff. Good selection on tap with a few locals adding to the entertainment. Good location to Stewart Island ferry. Perfect for our overnight stay in a grand old girl. Thank you 😊
Went down on ANZAC day and found only this place serving food. The hotel was buzzing with guests who had just finished the dawn service and attended the parade. The food was delicious and the portions HUGE. On the downside, there is room for improvement in the "standard of service" certainly short staffed for a busy bar and restaurant!!! Overall--7/10
What a great pub . Awesome home cooked meals and must important cold beers . Always come here when on holidays reminds me of a goog old auzzie pub . Family run and the rooms are very clean and cheap. The locals are friendly and it is great to have a beer with them and have a laugh .
Leading a motorcycle tour, we came across the Eagle Hotel. This is a fun place to stay. Spend the evening playing pool & darts and mixing with the locals. We arrived late in the day and owner went out of her way help get checked in and settled in for the night. I needed a Doc. and the owner called around to find one that was open and lead us there. Outstanding customer service.
The weather turned nasty and stopped our fishing. So we headed down to Bluff for a look around and found the Eagle Hotel. We stopped for lunch and I must say I had one of the best hamburgers I have ever had. It was absolutely beautiful. They also have a competition in the Hotel for those that are willing to try their mega sized burger and pint of beer. I could barely get through my normal sized meal given the generous portions on offer. My mates said the same of the meals they ordered as well.
Comparing where to go for in season Bluff oysters this traditional Kiwi pub ticked all the boxes. A dozen oysters only a few dollars extra than 4 Square with great service from friendly barman. Other bar food and good range of ales.
We went to Bluff for the Oyster Festival and stayed at the Eagle Hotel for the entire weekend. The owners and staff at the hotel were just awesome people and we had the most interesting conversations with the locals in the bar while we were there - something that just doesn't happen in big towns. We went to the Oyster Festival Saturday afternoon and found it very crowded (mostly by people who had flown in just for the day). The food was different, interesting and worth experiencing - the whole town bands together to make the festival happen and they should be very proud. It was just too crowded for me. As a hotel it isn't much different from other small town hotels - it was the owners and staff that gave it that something extra and made me really happy we stayed there. Our twin room was small and had a hand basin and mirror in the room but shared the other facilities down the hall. The electric blankets and heater were necessary - it was really cold even though it was May. The hotel provided cereal, toast, coffee and tea in the guest lounge. The guest lounge also featured a TV and a computer attached to the internet but we spent most of our time chatting with people in the bar. The bar had a decent snack menu and every once in a while they would provide a complimentary platter of goodies. It also had some serious dinner options - including a hamburger that if you could finish it would get your name on the wall. The oyster related items required you to provide your own oysters which makes sense if every other weekend a year the majority of business is locals. There was a caravan across the road the had oysters available in case you didn't have your own. The bar had free wifi but it didn't seem to reach to the rooms upstairs. The probably had a different one for the upstairs since they live in one of the rooms but I didn't ask about it. It was a nice place to stay and I'll stay there again given the chance, but at the very least pop into the bar and have a chat over a beer. …
