If you are looking for a relaxed place to stay, then consider the Horse and Jockey. There are an array of room options, shared bathrooms or ensuites, which were basic but very clean. Breakfast is your typical continental and the only negative is to be aware that there is music playing every night. However on Friday and Saturday nights, we read that they offer reduced rates and a later check out as compensation. There is also free parking and the staff were friendly and helpful.

Decided to go there for 'All you can eat ribs " After waiting 1 hour 20min our food finally arrived! By this time I was hungry and getting annoyed so expectations were high, what came out was extremelly average. Should never had taken that long, 3 ribs, stuff all sauce,a few wedges and a bowl of coleslaw. I was expecting a big bowl of ribs, dripping in sauce. Clearly that's not what I got. Had to find our own cutlery, salt n pepper, servietes and ask for a dipping bowl. One thing that was 100 percent great was our waiter, he tried his best to keep us sane knowing to well it was unacceptable, but he personally couldnt do anything about it. I decided to not eat the coleslaw as I am pregnant and it did not look fresh. We also Decided to order more ribs since after all it was all you can eat. Only to be told I must eat the coleslaw in order to get more ribs!! That was a waitress who hadnt served us at all. Very rude and abrupt. Not worth $36 for ribs. Way over priced. We were sitting inside, which usually would be a smoke free zone, yet everytime the court yard door got opened smoke would just pour in like a funnel. Leaving the inside reek of dirty 2nd hand smoke. Not impressed. 3rd time we have had crap food and service from this place. Never ever again will I step foot in there and we are local. It's not good enough

Not many places to stay in Matamata. This one included a casino downstairs that had some "interesting" clients. The rooms was spartan and had no soap or shampoo or TV. The guest wifi didn't work properly so the manager gave us access to the staff wifi. We were awaken in the morning by the city street cleaner driving back and forth noisily for what seemed like an hour. Considering Matamata is the jumping point to Hobbiton, I was expecting better.

Thought we would pop out for a quiet Saturday afternoon drink, quiet was right but the prices of wine was well over the top. We are locals but unfortunately will not be back. Felt we were totally ripped off, very disappointing. You would expect these prices in a Fine Dinning Restaurant NOT a Pub.
