Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A nice cheap, simple camping ground with hot springs, even the showers have the spring water. we stayed for 3 days and it is very busy. Only 5 minutes drive to Matamata. The hot pool is amazing. Recommend if you are looking for a stay out of the way and the locals are friendly.

We had a powered campsite. The facilities are older but everything was clean and welcoming. The Ramaroa Pool was well worth the visit. Close to Matamata and the Wairere Falls. It was an enjoyable weekend break away.

Honestly, a little disappointed in the man who I had the misfortune of speaking to at reception the night of our stay. What started as a nice relaxing getaway for my dad and I turned horrible when I had to cancel our private pool session. We had it booked for 8pm but unfortunately, dad wasn't feeling well and we needed to cancel. I went to reception to cancel at 6pm. The man was so so rude. Telling me 2 hours notice is not enough to cancel and he'd turned away customers for that time slot. I apologized again and it made no difference to his attitude. He simply rubbed our booking off the sheet and dismissed me as if i were dirt beneath his feet. I understand that it's inconvenient as it's ultimately cost you $40, but my dad has just been through months of chemo and radiation, he's still recovering and sometimes fatigue and feeling unwell hits suddenly and without warning. This trip was supposed to be a little getaway to celebrate the completion of treatment. And instead, dad is left feeling guilty, because he could hear how angry the man was and the way he was speaking to me. Telling me he's running a business and not a charity. And when i tried to reschedule for the morning, he refused to book me any other times. Told me its the public pool or nothing. Just absolutely disgusting customer service and we will not be back. Very sad. If that man is reading this, Get a better attitude, or get a different job because you don't know what's going on in people's lives mate, and being horrible and rude to your customers will get you nowhere and ultimately cost you a lot more than 40 measly dollars. I feel sorry for the other office lady having to witness your embarrassing behavior, she was absolutely lovely earlier when we checked in, what a shame. I was so upset by what happened I came to trip advisor to leave a review so this wouldn't happen to others, and I am shocked to find so many other bad reviews of this place! My assumption based on the other recent reviews is that the man i encountered was named Brendan? Unless this place has a history of horrible men working there. Either way, don't stay here!

We went for a “look” at opal hot springs to see if we wanted to stay or swim ….we walked around the car park & looked at the pools via the viewing platform and moved on to look at the cabins from the car park & were yelled at via the office window “HEY GUYS! WE CANT HAVE YOU WANDERING ROUND LIKE THAT…WE ARE REALLY BUSY!” Which really made us fell welcomed….NOT! Customer service could be improved a long way. Very unprofessional.

The kitchen cabins are tiny and the bed was one of the worst I have ever slept on, there were broken springs in our mattress! You have to pay for Wi-Fi, it costs $5 just to use the bbq and there are no tv's in the cabins. This place is in serious need of an upgrade, the only thing going for it were the hot pools

Booked this place the night before (due to a sudden change of plans) so didn't do usual feedback check - if we had, this place would have been avoided - disgusting, dirty, not as photos depict etc etc etc. Booked the tourist cabin based on description and photo of the room. When I clicked on Reserve, a photo came up on the booking page that was a panoramic shot (so I found out later) and this was a studio room, not a tourist flat, and then the confirmation reconfirmed the room photo. A few days later I checked on another website and the photo of the studio (aka tourist flat) was taken as it is - way smaller room than first shown on our booking site (hotels.com). When we arrived at the camping ground, we were given info on times etc by the admin lady. Wifi was mentioned - after being told the price I said probably wouldn't bother - I would just use my friend's data - the admin person said the wifi is not that great here anyway! but yet they charge you for a service that you are obviously not going to get much of, if any at all? When we opened the door to the 'tourist flat' it was awful. The smell was musty, the room was old, the bottom of the couch was coming away, the bedrooms did not look inviting at all and definitely looked NOTHING like the photo - not even close. We carried on looking around - found the bathroom - what an awful awful shower cubicle - old, dirty brown stain on the bottom, broken surround, totally uninviting at any price! Now I know why they don't put one single bathroom photo online - it was hideous and would put anyone off. The biggest mistake here was not taking a photo of what we saw. I went back to the office to give back the key and say there was no way we were staying there, told the admin lady why. She said she would ask the manager - he came in (Brendan). Brendan argued that the shower's brown marks was from the water that is used there - hmmmm, nothing I would want to shower under!! This was a short discussion - he was not impressed and said to the admin, very rudely "give her a refund and get that woman out of here". His attitude was appalling - never met such a rude person who runs a place of accommodation. Admin person said she couldn't refund me because I had booked through an agency - so then he backtracked and said, no refund - that we will have to go through the agency. Hotels.com rang him but for some reason he would not come to the phone. In the morning I went back to the camping ground. Brendan said "we've decided we're not going to give you a refund". I queried our "tourist flat" and they reply was "we have 3 tourist flats - 2 that look like the confirmation photo you received and the other one" - yet they advertise them as studios online, and why not show all the choices, not just the best of the worst? Admin showed me a photo album of what they advertise online - only the photos of the nice rooms, no bathroom photos at all. Another admin called their disgusting shower 'retro' and that people loved that. Was also told they had got a maintenance man in to fix the shower (broken surround that I mentioned). I said "that was quick - trying to cover up before I get my complaint in"? After more words back and forth I was shown the door. DO NOT STAY HERE!

This place is screaming for an upgrade. Facilities are very poor, dribbling shower and horrible toilets. No hot water and can’t even turn a light on. Dingy. Kitchen also basic and cleanliness is lacking. Pools not very warm also In Need of a paint and upgrade. We won’t be back and certainly would not recommend. Would be embarrassed for overseas visitors to stay here

I am no clean freak by any means and don’t often write reviews but in this instance I wish I had read an honest one before booking. The bathrooms were unclean, especially the solo toilet/shower at end of camp. Even if I wore my jandals while showering I would worry I’d still come out of there dirtier than when I went in. I was thankful I had a self contained RV to shower in. The main block toilet floors and sinks were not clean the two days I were there. Facilities are way too small for amount of people who stay here. The kitchen is tiny, two stoves and a fridge. No pots/pans unless you requested from office. Small bench space. As for the tv room it was a joke, more like a large closet with a tv. It was the thermal pools that drew us but they were a BIG let down. Full size pool for swimming which was fine but the two thermal pools supposedly 37 & 39 degrees were neither. I can’t handle 39 degrees and I was only feeling just warm in the 39 degree pool. The 39 degree pool was only chest deep whilst sitting. We booked a private spa the following night which was warm enough but no way 39 degrees either. The private spa room had paint falling off walls and glad we only booked half hour. Sorry to post this but don’t be drawn in by thermal pools. Worst motorcamp I have ever visited. Greeted by very friendly people at check in, so don’t get me wrong about them but sub-standard cleanliness.
