Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

It's a good, clean hostel that allows you easy access to many of the amazing nearby attractions. 4 person dorm was comfortable, kitchen was well stocked and there was games. Safes in room could have been a bit bigger.

Damien and his wife are the absolute best! My friend and I got in super late the night we arrived coming from the Auckland airport because our rental car company forgot to include our GPS. It was hell but Damien and his wife were SUPER nice and let us have a late check out since we got in so late. Also, Damien was a huge help in helping me contact the rental car company and in finding a solution to our GPS problem, even selling me his old GPS unit which worked perfectly and saved the rest of our trip! I have never met hostel owners so kind and willing to go out of their way to help a traveler! Also, the facilities are super clean and everything is well-run, wifi worked well, overall a fantastic hostel with great people!!

Good enough value for money. A kitchen with cooking equipment, cutlery, fridge and hobs, WiFi , games room with table tennis and pool.

The rooms were in what seemed like metal cabins but were very clean and beds comfortable. Stayed here to go to hobbiton which was close by and would recommend.

This place is a must stay when in Matamata. You won't find a better value room rate and you definitely won't find friendlier owners.

The place is advertised as it is. The rooms are situated outside in the cabins you see in photos. Very warm, very cosy and the max dorm is 4 so very spacious. Lockers available inside (bring own padlock obviously). No complaints in the rooms.

The bathrooms are big and clean and there's lots to choose from. One situated right next to cabins for quick use. Then the internal ones are fitted with showers, sinks and toilets also. Again no complaints.

Communal areas are kept clean and it was the most included we've felt in terms of socialising. Two lounges to pick from. One outside has free pool table and Netflix on the tv. Awesome!

But what really makes this place, are the owners. They went above and beyond for us. Letting us use their phones for bookings, chatting about what and where to go and Lauren actually offered to let us hitch hike with her to Taraunga one of the days as she was heading that way! Where else do you get that level of friendliness? Superb customer/guest care!

Never felt as welcomed as I had here. We extended for one night and would love to return!

Wifi is free and unlimited for stay. Works really well.
Close to McDonald's.
Free parking outside front.
Very secure site.
7 minute walk (if that) to isite (Intercity and Hobbiton tours meet here).
Close to all bars/cafes and a countdown.

Absolutely ideal! Thank you!

Hi there, I am so sorry that your things went missing when you left them in the shared bathroom. It is more than likely they were moved to our lost property cupboard by hostel staff. Unfortunately, as a hostel we can not be responsible for your valuables/belongings left in common areas. Small lockers in rooms are for valuables only e.g. Electronics, passport, jewellery etc. If you are worried about you belongings we have a luggage storage that you can check your belongings into. Alternatively, you can always book a private room or use a paddlock. I sincerely hope you enjoy the rest of your travels!

I've been living in this hostel while working up at Hobbiton, and I could not recommend it more highly. Clean, hip, and a friendly atmosphere. The owners rock. Best backpackers I've ever stayed at! A+

Really pleasant staff, clean facilities, showers that work, kitchen excellent, beds comfy, and for a bit more there are private chalets for couples. It is close to town, I mean easy walking distance to information centre and Hobbiton Bus pick up point, (5 minutes at most). We are older than the usual age for backpackers and we were very happy with it, and economic. Very good outdoor area with BBQ. We recommend it highly.

With the Hobbiton Movie Set being so close, this hostel definitely serves a need. It's a 5-minute walk from the i-SITE where you get the bus to tour or to your next destination. The beds are comfy, the washrooms are clean, and there's a well-stocked kitchen if you want to make your own food. There's also free wifi, and the speeds are decent. The only downside is that you need to go outside to get to the washrooms, which can be cold during the winter.

My girlfriend and I stopped here for 2 nights in a dorm for 4 people, very clean and comfy beds! There's a massive kitchen and a little lounge area where socialising is easy as, and all of the toilets were kept clean as a whistle. Only down side is that it doesn't supply towels (but this seems to be common amongst lots of hostels in NZ), however you can hire them for a mere 2 dollars which is cheaper than anywhere so far we've stayed! (Note to self: buy a towel, cheaper in the long run)! All-in-all we had a fantastic stay here and if I'm ever passing through Matamata for a night again, I'll be sure to stay here!
