Don't go there if you plan to sleep. Very loud place. People don't care about other guests sleep. Staff doesn't interfere. Cabins (containers) are very hot. Because of the loudness it is impossible to open the windows.

It's a good, clean hostel that allows you easy access to many of the amazing nearby attractions. 4 person dorm was comfortable, kitchen was well stocked and there was games. Safes in room could have been a bit bigger.

Good enough value for money. A kitchen with cooking equipment, cutlery, fridge and hobs, WiFi , games room with table tennis and pool. The rooms were in what seemed like metal cabins but were very clean and beds comfortable. Stayed here to go to hobbiton which was close by and would recommend.

I only spent 2 nights here but it was a good hostel, I had a nice experience here. The rooms were very private which I liked and there is a lot of outdoor space. There isn't as much space indoors which isn't ideal for winter but since it's not backpacker season, I don't think this is an issue! The staff were friendly and the hostel had a good vibe.

Stayed two nights at Matamata Backpackers while in town for Hobbiton. The dorms and private rooms are in old shipping crates. Very cool. There is heat but no AC or a fan so it could be hot in summer. Even at the end of summer we had the window open overnight and it was better but it’s snug for 4 people if it’s full. Kitchen is big and good storage but the pots and pans are a tad old. But it has almost everything you need. Nice common and sitting area too. Parking lot out front but also good street parking if it’s full. Petrol, grocery stores and the Matamata I-site are within walking distance, and it’s 15-20 min drive to Hobbiton. Overall quiet at night too, minus a neighboring garage and loud revving engine. Staff is super helpful and knowledgeable about the area too. WiFi is okay overall. Did not use the movie or game room but it is available. Would recommend it and stay again
