Our stay at Hack farm or Hack 'n Stay near Takaka was the most relaxed I've felt in a long time. The place and its people are welcoming, cheerful, friendly and generous with their hospitality. The rooms and facilities are budget-friendly, bright, clean, highly organised, professionally-run and the beds, very comfortable. On two consecutive Saturdays, we joined their Pizza night which was so much fun and a great way to meet up with new people and regulars, a mix of kiwis and newcomers. We had the opportunity to join a horse ride through the farm and on Patons Rock Beach which was a wonderful experience. We felt completely safe as beginners, as the horses are well looked after, the ride well managed, and the staff highly experienced. It was great to be emersed in farm life, feeding and grooming the horses, feeding the chickens, swinging on the tree ropes, watching the gymnastics on horseback (vaulting) and walking over the hills to the beach.

We will definitely be back - for the friendship, peacefulness, and experience of nature on the farm and, of course, to be around your lovely horses! It really does feel like home away from home. Thank you so much for a highly memorable experience.

I had always wanted to ride a beautiful horse, but was afraid to try. I decided to take the bit between the teeth and have a go, so I booked 2 nights camping and the 2nd day a riding experience at Hack and stay. What a fabulous time I had, Babel had me up on Brownacre and riding across the beautiful golden beaches within an hour. I learned so much about how to ride correctly, what was best for the horse and best for me (good posture!). They cater for all riding abilities, I had no experience, another customer had ridden his own horse previously and another had ridden when she was younger. We all had a great time....3 hours of riding pleasure. Babel shares years of knowledge and has a great sense of humour, she’s is very passionate about what she does and hearing her story was really inspiring.
The camping facilities are just what you need, a clean kitchen, lovely bathroom facilities and a chill out room.
I would not hesitate to recommend the whole experience, I am so glad I have this memory to take home with me, I will certainly use my new knowledges to have another go in future.

I've just spent two wonderful days at Hack and Stay. What an amazing place it is! It is sometimes slightly daunting when travelling solo to show up somewhere new but as soon as I arrived I was greeted with a friendly welcome by the enigmatic Sven and Wwoofers Nina, Inge. and Katharina. The Wwoofer girls were cooperative and helpful.
Thanks also to Ellie for your patience and guidance.
The hostess Bearbel is a warm and friendly lady, clearly passionate about giving people the very best horse riding experience. You can tell her establishment is safety conscious and well organised. There is a range of horses to ride including two magnificent Clydsedales.
You set off along a track which goes through native bush down to the beach which is nothing short of spectacular. I have done quite a bit of riding over the years and had got into some bad habits which I wanted to correct. I have learned so much in just a couple of rides. Barbel gets you in tune with your horse, she is a mine of information and has a marvellous way of showing you how to interact with the horse rather than struggle against him.
I'm definitely coming back here the next time I'm in New Zealand.

Kia Ora! Thank you so much for your wonderful review! One of the biggest contributing factors to the 'vibe' at HackFarm are the helpers this special place tends to attract, We've been very lucky to have hosted some wonderful wwoofers over the years. I'm glad to hear you enjoyed your time with us so much! We always love it when riders come back from their trek with a transformative experience - finding their true balance and connection with a horse. We look forward to welcoming you back next time you're in Golden Bay!

My partner and me intended to stay 1 night with our Campervan, in the end we stayed 3 nights, because we enjoyed it so much. The Farm is beautifully designed by the owner Bärbel and Thomas and a lot of very creative wwofers.

As a keen and also experienced rider I really enjoyed a ride on the beach with McDuff, a big Clydesdale horse. Bärbel is a passionate riding teacher focusing very much on qualitiy riding (inspired by Sally Swifts's Centered riding). She has a straight forward way of teaching and also as an experienced rider it can be a real eye-opener and challenge in a positive way to have a lesson while riding on the beach. Thank you so much. This experience is going to have a big impact on my future riding. Thank you so much for this p

The owner of this place could not have been more helpful. Upon our arrival she showed us where everything was and that we could use produce from the garden, herbs from the kitchen and there was a home made loaf of bread in the bread bin. The fire wood was stacked up ready to go and even lit for us when we where a bit late back from a days biking. An offer was made to pick us up from the local inn if we enjoyed a little to much hospitality. Even if you aren’t a horsey type of person, it is a great place to stay. And even dog friendly.

Our family of 4 shared the bunk room in the farmhouse which was good fun. The next morning we took the Patons Rock Beach ride with Bärbel (the owner) and four of the sweetest horses you’ll ever meet. We learned a ton about horse riding and enjoyed our stay and our ride immensely. Bärbel took great photos throughout our ride so we could just focus on riding and the gorgeous views. She even gave us flawless suggestions for where to get takeaway dinner to bring to Wharariki Beach for sunset and seal-watching. Our daughter (9) loved grooming the horses after our ride and our son (7) was all about the rope swing over the farm pond. If we had known how great Hack Farm was, we would’ve stayed much longer. Five enthusiastic stars!!

Its a labour of love, built for people (& Horses) on a human scale. Its really designed/ geared for horse lovers & Kids (of all ages). The farmhouse is semi-communal, very clean, orgnanized & well furnished.

Camper vans have a designated area, w/ kitchen area/ bath/ shower facilities. Tents have their space, w/ kitchen & bath access. There is a large garden. Its a great place to relax & recharge one's batteries while traveling. It's a great destination in itself.

Baerbell is an absolutely fantastic coach and teacher who really brings out the best in her riders. I booked an overnight stay along with an evening sunset ride and then a morning ride and it was one of the best horse riding experiences I have had. For experienced riders she hones the fine details and breaths fresh life into poor habits whilst sharing a vast amount of experience. The views are phenomenal and the beach ride is to die for.

You will love your experience!!

We arrived with our dog who is very friendly and placid. We had called prior and had been told we could take her.

As we pulled into the driveway there was a sign to be aware of the dog but never did we expect the dog to be off leash outside of the main office area.

The dog attacked our dog with so much aggression.

After the owner arrived from a horse trek we were then told that we should try and get the dogs to get along on mutual territory, however the dog continued to be aggressive and therefore we left.

If you have a dog I don’t advise this place!!!!!

3 middle aged women looking for adventure and we found it at Hack n Stay with a day hack experience that was so much more than we expected! Fun, nourishing and enriching is how I would describe our day trek with Bäerbel as our enthusiastic teacher and mentor. I have managed to horse trek all over the world and recently as far away as Dubai and never have a had the privilege of such well trained, beautiful horses and a comprehensive beginners experience for my friends. There were no mindlessly plodding horses while we sat ineffectually in the saddle. We were immersed and engaged in the art of centred riding, while all the time feeling completely safe. We absolutely LOVED it.

Bäerbel is all about 'manaaki', showing respect, generosity and care for us right from the get go. I appreciated her deep love and care for our whenua (land), moana (sea) and local hapori (community). She helped connect us to the land, sea and animals in such an enriching way. This place is something special.

Ngā mihi maiora, Hack and Stay whanau!
