Golden Bay Holiday park is located on the beach in the centre of Golden Bay, halfway between the Abel Tasman National Park and Farewell Spit. It is a spacious park comprising 210 campsites, 2 luxury apartments, 6 cabins and a self-contained cabin. The park is in a rural area at the end of a private road and is bounded by bush and pasture, with a river down one boundary and fronted by its own private beach. There is no street noise, and no street lights to disturb the natural setting. In the morning the sun rises out of the sea, and a beach fire in the evening is the perfect way to finish your day. We are dog friendly in our low peak season from beginning of March to end of November.

Here for a few nights with family, this is a great location for kids, really safe and loads to do. The kids loved the playground, the sea and the creek. The campground wasn't busy so the kitchen was clean and tidy and there wasn't a wait for the showers which were clean enough but could have been designed better. It felt a bit cheeky to charge for showers when we paid over $200 a night for a cabin.

However the tall male staff member was really aggressive towards an elderly visitor who had come from the beach to drop off supplies for the children. She hadn't come more than 10 metres onto the property when she was aggressively approached by the man and told to leave. Really off putting and coloured our stay. We came here as it's close to where our family live but would probably stay elsewhere next time. Other campgrounds manage visitors without abusing them, either by charging or having a curfew or simply not being so aggressive. A real black mark on this place unfortunately.

We stayed mid Feb 2023 for 5 night – great beach and amenities – we stayed in cabin #6 very private with all the mod cons - space and clear views - weber on the balcony overlooking the ocean.
We used this as a base to explore Farewell Spit, Heaphy track, Abel Tasman National Park (Totaranui), Te Waikoropupu Springs and surrounds.

Mussel Inn 5 mins down the road is a gem for food and drinks and music – wish we’d gone every night rather than only the 3 out of 5 – especially for the mussels – great value.

A lovely camp in a beautiful environment, but spoilt by the over zealous management. Campers are required to permanently wear a wrist band at all times. The management claim that this is necessary to ensure they know "who has paid". If that is the intent, then use a smarter system - record car registrations & issue vehicle stickers perhaps. This is religiously enforced and we had grandchildren intimidated & threatened with expulsion. This theme is accentuated by a policy of "no visitors", meaning your own family cannot come in to join you for a coffee! Shades of Mount Eden prison. The management need to chill out a bit. PS. The hot water in a number of the showers (which campers have to pay for) needs attention; they produce virtually no hot water.

The camp itself is fine. Cleaning staff very friendly and helpful . However booking in was very unpleasant with the female manager. We arrived, 2 caravans with 2 couples at approx 10 25am to be told very rudely that check in was 12 noon. I explained we wished to view an on line funeral which started at 11am. Reluctantly we were given sites but on asking for NZMCA discount were told because we were early that was not available. The camp was almost empty. .... we did not enjoy this experience .

This camp is in a beautiful location, sheltered in the prevaling wind, its quite large and was very busy but that's expected at this time of year. The facilities are quite old, they have done up a shower block which is very nice but the coin operated showers were very problematic most days. Its a shame that these upgraded facilities are not being kept clean as evident in the slime buildup around the perimeter of the floors over the week we where there. The kitchen floors also needed attention. I saw cleaning staff once while I was there over 7 days and observered a less than average attempt to clean a toilet cubicle. The staff seem to be a little disinterested in general but especially with cleaning, and given the current covid climate, more could be done here. Don't let this put you off a visit as there is plenty to do around the area and a great bakery and craft shops up the side road to the camp. Just remember some hand gel and wear jandels in the shower.

Response from Golden Bay Holiday Park, General Manager at Golden Bay Holiday Park
Responded 15 Jan 2021
Thank you for your feedback Wink. The campground is in a beautiful location, is large and does get very busy at this time of year. We have many positive comments and happy campers staying with us with the popularity of the park growing year by year. It surprises me you only saw a staff member cleaning ONCE over the period of a week you stayed with us. There are actually 4 staff members rostered on to clean the ablution blocks and hard accommodation during the peak period. They start at 4.30 in the morning while the blocks are quiet so the cleaning can be done efficiently. Another clean is done after lunch and then another check is done after dinner. It is also very disappointing you found the staff "disinterested" , we put a lot of effort into ensuring our guests receive a high level of service, this can be confirmed by the majority of other reviews placed on Tripadvisor.

Would not recommend to anyone, avoid!
Upon arrival the owner was grumpy. The facilities were revolting! Faecal matter and urine overflowing from the toilets and no toilet paper in the other toilets. The showers were cold despite having to pay for them and in the men's they would cover your genitals and that's about it. The owners seemed serious about limiting the spread of covid, yet there were signs telling you to wash your hands then sanitize...but no soap was provided? There were those most unhygienic pull down hand rolls to dry your hands on too. They cram you in a field with no hedges for privacy so you better get on with your 500 neighbour's. When we asked for a refund we got asked why and after explaining, we got sarcastic comments about how we clearly knew how to run a campsite. The owner reluctantly gave us one and we happily left!! Far too many people for the facilities to handle, especially during a pandemic!

We were rather disappointed with this camping ground and we didn't feel it was value for money ($59 per night). The power supply plug was a long way away from our camp site and our power cord did not reach the plug (this has never happened before). There was no hot water when my husband showered and because there was no shower curtain water went all over the area where you get dressed etc We probably wouldn't recommend this place to others ...

Left the main highway and drove down quite a long way to reach the camping grounds only to find that they were closed and no one was to enter under any circumstances. I understand that people may be worried about Covid but surely a sign on Billboard on the main highway would save people the trip to the camp.
I rate it low due to owners not displaying closed on the bill board and cannot answer any questions on amenities.

My family had visited before but this was my first time, what a lovely quiet, clean and tidy camp. It was surprisingly quiet so we had no near neighbours and the children had plenty of space to run around and ride their bikes safely. Everywhere is close to the beach, playpark and creek. There is a small camp shop, a coffee shop/yoga retreat/clothes and art shop very nearby and a useful bakery otherwise you have to drive to Collingwood or Takaka but neither are far away. It’s a lovely sandy quiet and unspoilt beach. We would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a peaceful site with lovely staff as it’s a great place to stay and explore the region. We loved it.

This is one of our favourite camping spots in New Zealand - not only does it have its own private beach access, it also has beautiful grounds (including a fairy walk through the bush), a playground, and great facilities. This is a magic spot, well located between Takaka, Collingwood and surrounds, where there are heaps of cool spots to explore and cultural events to enjoy. Can’t wait to revisit!!
