Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We stayed on three separate occasions with Tina and Craig between hiking trips. It really felt like a home away from home. Tina and Craig were so friendly and welcoming, great kitchen and common spaces, lovely free herbs fresh from the garden and set up well for recycling/compost with good environmental ethics. They also kindly helped us get back to our car on our rainy last day! Thanks for everything and hope to see you both again soon

A good choice. We were able to have a room just to ourselves -- the place was not very busy, which was strange as it was the height of the summer season. In fact, Takaka wasn't very busy, now that I think of it. Beds were comfortable; kitchen well equipped; manager friendly. Nothing at all to complain about. I see that someone else said security was a concern, but this sort of arrangement (open rooms) is the norm for backpackers. Just keep your valuables looked in the car.

What a treat it was for this 60plus year old couple to discover the kiwiana hostel in Takaka. We were Welcomed by Tina, who instantly made us feel at home . Found a Clean well equipped kitchen and great showers! The bed was super comfy with fresh linen. The lounge had a roaring fire and lots of fascinating activities -pool, games, instruments . But I loved curling up on the comfy sofa with my book ! Takaka itself is charming and quaint . Really recommended the Roots bar for dinner . If it hadn’t been raining we would have taken one of the tandem bikes for a twirl ! The garden was stunning too. In fact what wasn’t to love ! ( all this for a budget price )a “boomers” delight indeed!

We wanted to stay 1 night and made a reservation by phone. The lady running the backpacker unfortunately misunderstood that we said 2 nights. I tried to apologise for the misunderstanding but the lady was very rude to us and only cared about the money she wouldn't get and she was seriously angry. In the end we offered her to leave so she can find new "better" customers which was when she calmed down a bit. The hostel was clean and well established but you gotta keep to the 10000 rules: we were really happy we stayed just one night cause although there were a few games in the yard it was no fun place to stay.

We came here after staying in a full on backpackers in Nelson and in comparison this place is super quiet. The 2 nights we spent here we had great sleeps, just what we needed. The house is old school, but I enjoyed the backyard with hammocks and tables. Great to have the free bikes for roaming around town.

Camped here for a couple of nights. One of our favourites, cosy atmosphere, always enough room to cook in the kitchen, free soup every night which helps if ur on a tight budget. Table tennis and a pool table were great. Highly recommended.

This place is really a gem. I have spent over 60 nights I hostels- not a ton compared to most. But this is by far the best hostel I have been to. Game room is amazing especially if weather isn’t good, town is pretty close, the owner is more than accommodating and has been checking in with us and giving us suggestions for the area. This is the first hostel I have been to that truly feels homie. Yes, not a ton of room security, but they lock the doors and the gate out front. However, this is the first hostel I have been to where I have not get the need to lock up any of my stuff. All those staying here seem like very honest people and would be fine leaving money just sitting on my bed here.

If your coming to town, you gotta stay here !

I came here with a few friends after we got rained out of our road trip. The couple who owns the hostel were both extremely accommodating, warm and friendly. I would absolutely come back here for the service let alone the beautiful hostel itself. The lounge was great to spend a couple of rainy afternoons meeting people and playing pool. The only con of this place is that there's no free wifi, but you get to connect with the people around you instead!

I made contact for my booking via email, the response was immediate and very helpful.
I arrived early and Tina and her partner went out of their way to help me. Nothing was too much trouble.
The atmosphere of the hostel is super friendly, cozy and homely. Within 30 minutes I was chilling on the sofa with a couple of girls that are a long term stay. I felt so welcome and at home.
Everything is super clean and homely.
Tina and partner go above and beyond and it is clearly more than a job to them.
The two local girls are such a bonus - they are always on hand to help with questions and help in any way that they can.

Il definitely go back again, my favourite hostel in NZ!

It rained for most of our short visit to Takaka but I can't think of another hostel better equiped to entertain us on a rainy day. The communal building is fantastic. Table tennis, Tv, pool, darts, guitars all for free.

The location is perfect to see the many natural beauties close by, so will have to come back another time to see them at their finest!
