You'd be hard pressed to find a more relaxed and welcoming place. A great introduction to the laid back vibe that makes Takaka and Golden Bay so special, and a welcome addition to casual clothing optional accommodation. Both naturists and textiles will find this a homely haven with lots of freebies that many other places charge for. Plenty of accommodation options, and fine for families, couples, friends and solos. No pressure, no stress, no hassles. Recommended.

I recently had the pleasure of staying with Paul (and Rachel, his adorable, loving dog) at Gazebo Backpackers for three weeks. A backpackers in name, this place quickly feels like home. Paul provides full access to the kitchen--pots, pans, spices, the works!--a cozy indoor living room (great for watching movies), a shaded outdoor patio for reading or yoga, and lush green backyard for lounging and dining (and a fresh herb garden!). He often shares his garden hauls with his guests--yum! The bedrooms are neat and tidy and very comfortable (I'd say it's worth the extra pennies for the private room and nice big beds!). The house itself is pretty much spotless. Generally, there are only a few other guests, so there's plenty of space, and it's easy to make friends with fellow guests if you like.

More than just ticking the boxes of what you want in a hostel, the atmosphere here is really what makes it. Paul is super friendly and incredibly knowledgeable about the area. He even introduced us to some friends of his who took us out to Pupu Springs. The best part, it's a safe, open space for guests interested in a clothing optional place to stay. The outdoor shower goes nicely with this, and with the warm summer weather it is just a delight!

Bottom line: I cannot recommend Gazebo highly enough!

I pretty much want to echo everything that lef06 wrote in their review! Such a well-written and all-encompassing review- definitely check it out. All I would like to add is that although I was a little apprehensive about staying at a clothing optional hostel, I ended up feeling really comfortable here and extending my stay several days because I met such great people here. Paul was really kind and offered lots of helpful advice. When I slept poorly one night due to another guest shuffling her legs around all night, he offered me a private room at no extra cost so I could get a good night's rest before traveling the next day. I don't think this place would be right for everyone, but certainly if you are open-minded and enjoy a homey-feel, you can make some really great connections and have everything you need. I would definitely stay here again!

What a great place, but be warned...its hard to leave- we only came for 1 night and ended up staying nearly a week!! It may not be a big, new and modern hostel- but it has something that you can not buy- atmosphere, feels like you've been there for ever. Paul's done a great job creating this unique home away from home. We will be back next season :-) Martin & Sian

Such a beautiful place to stay! A lovely relaxed atmosphere and heaps of fun. I felt a bit nervous staying at a clothing-optional hostel, but felt so comfortable and accepted around everyone staying here whatever clothing I chose to wear or not wear. The people I have met here, including Paul (our host) and his lovely dog Rachel will be memories I keep for life. Very close to Takaka township for all our needs. Bikes that can be borrowed to travel to exciting waterfalls and swimming holes. Looking forward to next summer already <3

From the first moment I walked in to enquire I felt at ease. No reception desk, just walk in straight into the kitchen/dinning area. Small and clean. Friendly and interesting. Paul, who converted his home into a backpackers was an awesome host: generous, welcoming and kind. On a hot day it was awesome to strip and be naked amongst others. On a rainy day others watched movies in the lounge while I caught up on some computer work in the dinning area. Most of us shared dinner in the evening and coffee in the morning. Other guests did their own food. Slept in my tent on the front lawn.

This is an enjoyable place to stay if you desire a small family environment. The town is nice and the fact one can go clothing optional when desired is awesome. Paul is constantly looking for ways to improve the space. During special events Paul sets up events to do as as a group allowing one to learn from and meet other like minded people.

Word of mouth brought me to this place. Rachel, the owner, and her friend Paul are great hosts. The atmosphere is very family-style, its difficult to not integrate with the other patrons. The kitchen is great. The beds are comfortable. There are bicycles for loan. Golden bay is lovely. I recommend this hostel over the others in town.

i am so glad i stumbled accross this unique place, guests are number one priority and Paul makes sure everyone is happy and content while sharing his wealth of info on the surrounding area, there are bikes to use, wifi, movies, comfy sofas and chairs and plenty to cook with.. it is also unique in its clothes optional attitude, i really felt at home and at ease here, so refreshing to be able to relax and sunbath without getting tan lines and use the outdoor shower and bath..lush fresh takaka spring water..a truly unique experience... its not often i feel reluctant to leave a place but gazebo is one of those gem of a places where the atmosphere allows you to just chill out hassle free home from home backpacking..oh and its a short 20 min bike trip if you want raw milk and organic veg from the farm...and to the beach..

The Golden Bay Backpackers follows usual nudist etiquette: In the nudist community, the established nudist erection etiquette is to cover up with a towel or go in the water until the moment passes. In nudist resorts / clubs, having an involuntary erection or temporary arousal is usually tolerated as long as guys are discrete about it. However, flaunting or walking around with a prolonged visible erection is typically against the rules and may result in being asked to leave. The reasoning being that flaunting an erection will be seen as an inappropriate sexual behavior / advance and will make others uncomfortable.
