What a wonderful place. We stayed there 3 nights and wish we could have stayed longer but it was booked. We grilled out on the BBQ and enjoyed our breakfast watching the waves. We ate at the Mussel Inn which was pretty good and great beer. Wwhat a wonderful place. We did hike PuPu Springs and the PuPu hydro walk, which were fantastic. We loved this place.

We spent 3 nights in Golden Bay at the Golden Bay Lodge (a B&B) in Pohara, just a few miles from Takaka. It was the perfect place to relax and take in the gorgeous NZ scenary, and it provided incredible access to Abel Tasman National Park. One day we did a 15 mile hike through the park, which was amazing. There are plenty of cute restaurants in Takaka and a great coffee place in Pohara called the Totally Roasted Cafe. The coffee was delicous as were the homemade muffins. While there we visited the Pupu Springs, an easy and pretty little walk, drove to Collingwood and then went off the beaten path to the Naked Possum. This restaraunt is not worth missing. The food was some of the best we had on our trip. I would suggest Golden Bay for anyone who likes to enjoy the outdoors. If we had been there in the summer, it would have been fun to kayak as well.

Well, it was hard to fault this place, a free upgrade to the cottage was a great start, combined with a roaring fire and some home made lemonade and herbs. The property is right on the beach, which is accessible down a steep track, about 50 metres walk. There is a spa pool, which overlooks the bay. The cottage sports a roomy bedroom upstairs with great views and a balcony, also a lovely box window with seats for just sitting around and drinking wine. The lower level has a huge bathroom, and kitchen, fully working laundry and accommodation for another couple of people. It's about 20 mins drive to collingwood, and 10 mins from takaka. Hosts were friendly and discrete, can't recommend high enough.

We stayed here just yesterday. We booked and paid for 4 nights but ended up leaving after 1 night because the place was filthy. Worst place we stayed in 6 weeks of travelling. There was no love for nothing. Doormat was muddy and porch wasn't sweeped. We had no hot water because the gas tank was empty wondering how the cleaning lady cleaned with cold water?? Problem was resolved shortly after calling a friend of the owner. Owner was happy vacationing in Fiji. Spiderwebs on the inside, dust everyhwere, crumbs in the cupboard, greasy dishes. There was 1 bowl which was so greasy I left it on the table when we checked out. It was disgusting! Internet didn't work (she could have informed us because apparently it was because of a storm, wifi was working though you only couldn't connect) and tv remote was broken so was the oven door which didn't close properly anymore. There were hair in the bed and shower. The trashcan in the kitchen had never been cleaned before. The lid was so dirty. Even a trashcan has to be cleaned from time to time. The sink in the kitchen was also dirty. We had to stay one night because we arrived late with kids. We checked out immediately the day after and complained by email to the owner who denied that she is the owner and would be no longer the manager of that place. Her business cards with her name were all over the place though. Hard to believe her. Wondering if she's decent enough to give us our money back (will update here) We are very disappointed! This was suposed to be the vacation of our lifetime. I'm wondering if is because we came in winter but the place has to be tidy even off season!

Response from markhb123, Owner at Golden Bay Lodge & Garden
Responded 19 Oct 2017
Hi Bridget, this is Mark - the owner of Golden Bay Lodge. Firstly, I’d like to offer my sincerest apologies for your understandable disappointment. I do appreciate that the condition of your accommodation left much to be desired and for that reason have fully refunded your payment. We employ a full time Manager to look after our guest’s needs but It is clear from your review that on this rare occasion Cindy (who you refer to as the owner in your review) got things embarrassingly wrong. Cindy has subsequently left her employment at Golden Bay Lodge and Garden. Our new manager Henry is fully aware of the high standards of cleanliness and customer service our guests expect. Sadly, I cannot undo the disappointment you suffered, but I hope that the full refund I have made goes some way towards compensating you for our failure on this occasion. If you do return to New Zealand we would like to offer you a complimentary weekend stay.

This place is so good, we'd prefer to keep it a secret! Yet we owe Cindy Joy and Colin a thank you and recommendation. We stayed here 4 days recently and didn't want to leave.
We stayed in the Bach and enjoyed the house, organic treats abounding in the garden, the easily accessed beach, the kayaks, and the full moon for three of the nights we were there. As others have said, it felt like living in paradise! Bring your supplies so you can savor the entire days there.
It also is near Farewell Spit, Collingwood, and the great Wharariki Beach. We had a great time exploring all of them.

A truly special place in an unspoilt and tranquil location in Golden Bay. The location is easily accessible from Nelson by car (recommend buying local fruit and produce en route, it’s fresh and delicious). We stayed in the cabin, which has sea views and is surrounded by beautiful gardens (great morning yoga spot) and is just a short walk to the most spectacular beach. Great for walking, swimming, kayaking etc. And keep your eyes pealed for the penguins at night. The cabin is well equipped, modern and comfortable. Nice detail touches such as eco products including washing powder, huge selection of books, and DVDs and good WiFi. Great stuff to do around the area too, Wharariki Beach, river swimming, The Langford Store (for the best chocolate cake) The Mussell Inn for dinner, 3 days wasn’t long enough, hopefully we will return!

We spent 6 nights in the Cabin at Golden Bay Lodge and thoroughly enjoyed it. The Cabin was clean and tidy and the firebox kept us toasty warm at night. Lovely beach and close to Mussel Inn for evening meals. Central to explore the bay and numerous walking tracks in the area.

Private quiet unit, lovely view and beach access. Close enough to Abel Tasman Park and Farewell spit for great walks. Good internet, loved the fire, modern, clean. Really enjoyed our time here thanks.

Very Clean and beautiful. Did a nearby willow weaving course with Peter Greer. Highly recommend. Close to the Mussel Inn I had a great dance to a live band and yummy dinner. Next morning an amazing walk on beach then offbto my course.

This place is amazing - the owner (Cindy) greeted us with fresh vegetables and fruit from her gardens (which we had access to during our stay). Whether using the kayaks, hunting for fresh mussels or reading a book - you can't go wrong with this little gem. The view is fantastic - very relaxing!
