I was with a group of people from around NZ who met up in Takaka for 4 days. I was dubious about the accomodation booked at the River Inn but decided to give it a try. I could not have been more satisfied. The hosts, Paula and Richard were very welcoming and showed us all to our rooms. My room was very nice with a good bed, drawers with a mirror and a handbasin. The shared bathroom didnt pose the problems I had imagined. The showers were great, good pressure and lots of hot water. I slept with the old sash window open despite a full building verandah just outside my bedroom but felt very safe. There is a kitchen provided if self catering is done which includes a fridge freezer, a microwave and gas cookers. I did not know the cost of the accomodation on arrival and was pleasantly surprised when paying 4 days later it was just $30 per night. If you stay in the River Inn and expect luxury you are not in the right place. But if you want to be treated as a real guest and are prepared to go with the flow well this is the place for you. The in house meals are superb. I plan to return and hope nothing has changed.

Stayed 5 nights with my partner over Christmas. Paula and Richard are excellent hosts. The hotel itself needs some money spent on it but the rooms were comfortable. We used the guest kitchen and having a bar/restaurant downstairs is a major plus. An ideal spot for exploring Golden Bay John

We are traveling around in a small camper and this was an excellent place to stay. Quiet, private and access to everything you need in regards to a lounge, kitchen, bathrooms. Also a great bar, where the locals are super friendly and it's easy to hang out and find out about the local spots and stories. Really enjoyed our time here, lovely hosts. Thank you!

We stopped here for a night in our motorhome. Lovely peaceful spot to park up. The hosts Richard and Paula are very friendly and welcoming. We had excellent meals sitting by the open fire. Much appreciated on a cold winter night. We will definitely stay again if in the area.

My husband and I stayed here for a night and enjoyed the best hospitality ever. Such lovely people and a great pub with a large garden with plenty of shade, or sunny spots if you prefer. Beer and food top notch too. Highly recommended.

Whenever I go to Golden Bay I stay at the River Inn. The rooms are fairly basic but adequate, a bunk a basin and a view up Takaka Valley. Good Friday is not the best day to be at a pub but a bit of forethought saw me well supplied with alcohol. The balcony was a good place to have a few quiet ones and all the other guests thought the same, so I spent the evening in the company of two French guys and a bunch of young New Zealanders from Christchurch. The next morning saw me sitting on the back deck drinking coffee and smoking with our hosts Richie and Paula and staff. A quick breakfast and off to Charlett point looking for plant fossils. Back later in the day carrying about a 100 kg of rocks, having built up a bit of a thirst and the pub was open I had a Montieths original ale and then another three before deciding that I should feed myself. Cooking facilities are again basic but adequate and if you are feeling lazy the kitchen staff will cook a meal for you but it is take what you get. If you like luxury and complain about everything go somewhere else
