Detailed Reviews
We stopped at Possum Lodge on our AE. It's a great site. We had a powered pitch for our hired camper van which was a good size and had a picnic table. The owner let us use our BBQ to cook dinner, then I used the well equipped kitchen to wash up. Everywhere was clean. The showers were plenty hot enough. The nearby walks were great and the best thing for us was all the Tui! So nice to chill out listening to them calling and their wings whirring as they flew overhead. We stayed in winter and we'd like to stay again at other times of year. Would highly recommend.

Thank you for your review Andy. We agree with you, and thoroughly enjoy listening to, and watching the birds here. We hope you had a chance to hear our 'local' Morepork owl at night as well. Hopefully you will get another chance to visit in the future. All the best for the rest of 2020.

We visited Possum Lodge for just one night, however I would definitely have loved to have spend more time there.
We had not pre booked and came across this beautiful, quaint accommodation. We booked into a powered site for our campervan and made use of all the facilities which were very clean and well stocked.
The location is a hidden gem, found down a long drive way, you come into a a magical setting that is just a few steps from the lake.
Thanks so much for a lovely stay!

We stayed too litte to really get to know Leanne and her family, but the little time we spent with her she was kind and welcoming. The place is very good for the price, very very easy to arrive if you are coming with a car. The parking lot is pretty spacious and it feels pretty safe and secluded. The place is right by the lake which is amazing and so isolated that the stars are just speechless. The room was tiny but had everything you needed. The beds were confortable and eventhough the weather was pretty cold, the heating worked so well I had to crack a window because it was too hot at some point. Also you get a electric blanket, which for my always-cold friend was a little piece of heaven. Basic kitchen but all you need. The only downside maybe is that the bathrooms are pretty far off and in the open, so in the cold of the night is pretty horrible to get out to the garden. Other than that, super chill and outdorsy vibe. Would definetely stay again! Loved it!! :)

We were excited to stay at Possum Lodge while visiting Manapouri and Doubtful Sound as part of our 21st anniversary. The website pictures of the grounds and the proximity to Doubtful Sound were appealing as well as the reviews. The gardens were beautiful but unfortunately that was the best part of the place.
The buildings including the lounge, kitchen and bathroom were a bit dilapidated and could be cleaner. We were not expecting anything fancy but we were glad we were staying in our own self contained RV. The parking was extremely crowded with sites so close together offering little to no privacy. Be advised it costs up to $8 to do one load of laundry.
All of this we could have put aside however the biggest disappointment was the unfriendly and rude camp hostess Leann. We previously stayed at four different locations and all of them at the very least wished us a happy anniversary upon arrival ( I mentioned it in the comments upon booking). Not a word from Leann. One afternoon we had a simple question to ask and she was out mowing the lawn with headphones on. She didn’t bother to stop the mower or remove her headphones, grunted a short response and kept on mowing. Not sure if this treatment was because we are a gay couple because we did witness her smiling and laughing with other guests which was the complete opposite of how we were treated.
Better upkeep of the buildings and friendly fair treatment to all guests would have made this a delightful experience instead of us counting the hours before our departure.

It is a shame you feel the need to write a negative review for myself and my business, all because I did not wish you a happy anniversary!! I welcome all my guests with friendliness and respect & recall chatting with you about your new campervan when personally showing you around the camp. I work 7 days a week during our current busy season and do not have as much time as I would like to stop and 'chat' with everyone. You have totally misjudged me & your personal attack is unwarranted and unjustified.

Due to covid and being pre Christmas, I had a 6 bed bunk room to myself for two nights. The place was very clean and the staff helpful. The lounge room is very comfortable and I was even able to do yoga on the floor in there and in the bunk room. The kitchen is reasonably well equipped. I was sorry to see no composting. It is in a great location - metres from the lake and the river and a short walk to the Real Journeys jetty. There is a wide range of accommodation.

Thank you for your review Annemarie. We started a composting bin a couple of years ago but ended up spending our time removing general rubbish and bones from it, so unfortunately, had to give up the idea. All the best for 2021.

We stayed two nights in one of the self contained cottages which felt like staying in your grandma's house. Clean and functional but very old school/retro. The bed was comfy with a grandma coverlet. A full kitchen was provided including a stove and microwave. The cottage was warm and the shower hot. The location was excellent allowing a walk into the few shops in town and to the wharf for cruising including through the forest which reminded us strongly of Norway. The Church in town was a great pub also with a chilled vibe, frequented by locals and we had an excellent meal and a generous glass of wine and would recommend if it's open when you visit. Henry the owner/manager of the park was friendly and chilled. There were sports items like kayaks you could borrow which would be great in summer and a fire pit. We enjoyed the casual vibe here and would recommend if you need a place to stay.

During my planning of my first ever solo campervan holiday I found this place.
I based my whole trip around coming here and i wasn't disappointed.
I stayed here two nights so i could do the Doubtful Sounds tour.
Leanne was lovely to meet and so helpful.
The facilities were outstanding.
Hot showers.
A real hairdryer.
Fresh beautiful water.
Super quiet with beautiful bird life.
And a stunning night sky.
Just below the camp are a couple of tracks by the lake.
I took some amazing sunset photos and just enjoyed the peace and quiet.
In the morning the walk down to the Ferry is only 5-10 min through bush.
A dump station is just at the beginning of the town by the fire Station.

We stayed in a camper van and a friend camped next to us which wasn’t a problem for the electric hookup bit.
We were warmly welcomed on arrival and felt very at home at this small but well run family campsite.
It was so nice to go for nearby walks and the campsite even lent us a kayak to cross the river.
We had been camping for about 10 days at different sites both private and DOC, but this was by far the best. So nice to have a beer by the campfire and talk to other guests/ travellers.
The pub/old church at the top of the track is also worth a visit.
Thanks for a great stay and I hope we are back someday.
Cheers,
Matt, Joanna and Emma

We just left this place today and I can’t speak highly enough of the units, the beauty and the location. The family that run it are so friendly and will help with anything - we were rushing out but had a couple of hoodies to dry and they offered to put them in when the dryers were free, we came back and they were dry and folded on our doorstep, so sweet. They also have a fire at night where we had marshmallows and chatted with other guests that were also talking about how great the hosts are and their accomodations. There’s a restaurant/pub a couple minutes walk up the road, and and an awesome flying fox (which holds adults too!), and it’s 5mins walk through beautiful bush to the doubtful sound ferry. Our family had a great time and we’ll definitely be back. Nga mihi. Thanks again.

This is a really cool place.
Henry takes such pride in the place, and really cared about our experience. He made sure we selected the site that would work best for us, (we were in a campervan) and I saw him escorting others around to do the same. We loved the relaxed “old school” vibe around the place, and the sound of the songbirds everywhere. Being so close to the lake and to the trails through the woods. The scent of wood smoke drifting through camp when Henry lit up a fire in the chimera. The skies at night through the trees.
Fancy, this is not. Authentic, yes, 1000%. Clean, cheerful, relaxing.
One of the highlights of our visit to the South Island!
