Detailed Reviews
Welcoming host. When we arrived he showed us around the grounds and gave us the tour. The lodge is right on the estuary with beautiful pohutukawa trees lining the shore. The water in the estuary is not very deep at all and was pleasant to swim in, although we'd recommend reef shoes. The ocean and beach are just a short kayak across the estuary where there were few, if any, people around. They have rescue animals on their property which were a delight to see, and to pet! They had a few other guests staying at the time, but it was not fully booked when we stayed there. They also have a very nice cinema that you can reserve a show time for, and choose from their movies. We ended up watching Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring because we had just come from Matamata that day and seen Hobbiton. The super king bed in the double ocean suite was superb and it was nice to have some screens on the windows so we could leave them open all night and hear the ocean and the sea birds. We also enjoyed the jacuzzi spa several times during our stay, but it could have been a bit hotter. Overall the hosts were very nice, but gave us some mixed messages.
My husband and I as well as our friends, another couple, had booked the double ocean suite, which says on the website is a first floor suite, but is in fact, not. This didn't make a difference to us really because we are all young and fit and in our late 20s, but for someone else with disabilities, trouble walking up stairs, this might present a problem. On the tour we were showed through the downstairs kitchen in the main house and were told we could use it, but just to put everything back the way we found it. We were told later by the lady host (after we had cooked some eggs and bacon and made toast and coffee in the morning..and cleaned up) that we were not allowed to use the kitchen. Also, we had read the reviews on tripadvisor that said they were allowed to bring wine into the cinema, so we had gone to the store and bought some candy and soda to have while watching the movie. I later asked the host if it was okay to bring them in just to make sure and he said we were only allowed water. Now, I don't know if he was just juding us by our age and assuming we'd spill on his seats or what? It seems to me like this lodge is trying to be too many things at once, for it is not a true B&B, because there's no breakfast, and it's not a Hotel, because there is no maid service. It seems like they're trying to be the best of all worlds, but it presents a very confusing situation for their guests.
I would definitely recommend this hotel for it's setting and amenities, but just make sure you know what sort of place you're booking, and if you have any questions about it, call before you book!

Bream Bay Lodge looks beautiful and there's lots of lovely rescue animals there that give you a lovely welcome. Everyone there is really friendly and nice but at the prices we were paying I do expect a little bit more. For example in the cottage where our friends were staying all the cast iron outside furniture was dirty, a wash down with a hose pipe before your guests arrive is not too much to ask I feel. The outside BBQ, the only cooking facility apart from a microwave, was very elderly and worn, just a few replacement parts would have made a BIG difference to it.
We were in the studio apartment, very small but adequate, but there was only a small table and 1 chair for two people, so we couldn't both sit down and eat together. It was also very hot in the night and there was no a/c in this studio, very uncomfortable as with the window open we had company from the local mosquitos.
As I said at the beginning, it is a lovely place but it could be a wonderful place if the little things were taken care of in the same way as the beautiful grounds and it's lovely animals.

My boyfriend and I stayed in the french cottage at Bream Bay Lodge for a weekend away. It was lovely and peaceful which was just what we were looking for. However if the cottage next door had been occupied it would have been much less private (they are right next to each other, extremely close with the deck and windows facing each other). It would definitely be worth checking if there are people staying in the other cottage if you're after privacy.
The cottage furnishings are very 'chintzy' and there was an overpowering smell of pot pourri (I finally found the offending plug in air freshener and removed it...). Not really my style but very comfortable and high quality wih a lovely bedroom and nice bathroom. There were a few things lacking that I really thought should be included when you're paying this sort of price - we had to ask for a heater (it was the middle of winter and there wasn't one) and were provided with a tiny plug in fan one. There is no dishwasher (as if we wanted to spend our romantic weekend doing dishes!) and no proper oven. There is no heated towel rail in the bathroom. So a few quite key details were lacking...
We were a it disappointed by the view, the cottage is right by the estuary but there is a fence and a big row of trees in the way so if you're looking for sea views, this is not the place for you.
I'm choosing not to recommend this place because I think there are other properties where you'd get better facilities, views etc for the same price.

We were most disappointed in most aspects of our stay.
It is ridiculously expensive for one big room with a minute bathroom with no bath- fibreglass shower!!
And they charge 2.5% for credit card.
There is hardly a water view- it is hidden by huge trees. There is no walk along the estuary. It is remote which may appeal to some. We like to park the car and walk- to beach - can't do. Restaurants - can't too far.
Furnishings are ok. The tiniest tv for a big room.
No sky sport channels.
Wifi did not work for first afternoon. Manager said it did work. We travel extensively and DO know how to log on. We were made to feel stupid.
Later the correct login option appeared. Then wifi was fine and generous.
Vacuum cleaner and cleaning brooms etc in wardrobe??
At $250 pn I don't expect to clean.
Nobody enquired if we needed the room serviced.
I would not recommend this place. Better to stay near the beach or other villages with more options.

When you read on the website spectacular private surf beach you do not expect a public beach access 2 km away ! The suggested crossing the lagoon by kajak plus a rough sanctuary is impossible. The bed was very good, dishes not clean, towel from previous guests still in bathroom.

When we arrived there were locals visiting and we have never been more ignored nor felt like we were causing an inconvenience at any place we have ever stayed. The only plus was the bed was wonderful and we were just stopping 1 night to break up driving. This is a B+B without the 2nd B. Simple fact>>>>>>>hospitality industry w/o hospitality = 0.

2 nights here with last minute booking. We were upgraded to the garden view apartment which had absolutely everything in it that one could imagine.
Very peaceful and lovely walks in the grounds as others have described.
Waipu Cove beach and restaurant are only minutes away. Both are excellent.
perfect for a short break

We choose Bream Bay for our Honeymoon retreat and could not have been happier. Friendly hosts greeted us and showed us to the Garden View apartment. Fantastic out look and wonderfully quiet and relaxing. Highly recommended.

The location is beautiful and so are the grounds with an outlook over the estuary. We booked the Luxury Studio and at $200/night were very disappointed. Its just a bedroom with a separate bathroom. There is a lovely patio area which you can see from the window however you have to walk all round the building to get there. The only door to the room is straight from the drive way. As soon as we walked in we felt disappointed. the shower still had hairs in it from the last person and the cooking facilities (self-contained) are a microwave and a toaster in an alcove cupboard. not at all what we were expecting. Certainly not worth $200 a night and no different to a nice hotel room elsewhere. They offer free internet however you can't connect as the signal is too weak.
I'm sure other rooms may be different but this room was a let down
