Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Stayed one night whilst cycling the rail trail. Lodge hosts provided a travel cot and linen for our 1yr old daughter, very accommodating to families. Kitchen extremely well supplied with everything you need. Very easy walk (less than 5min) into town for groceries, restaurants etc. Right beside the geyser and hot springs.

This is a beautiful lodge full of charm and character in Te Aroha. The old style villa has been exquisitely renovated as a luxurious, sophisticated and relaxing boutique establishment. There are a choice of rooms, between a veranda wing which are completely self contained and ensuited and the guest house, with one bedroom that has its own ensuite and another two that share a gorgeous bathroom complete a claw bath. My mother and I had the entire house to ourselves when we stayed here in February.

The beds were comfortable, I had an excellent sleep, and the bedrooms of the house had a wrap around balcony which you could sit out on in the warm summer evenings. We only stayed here for a night, but I could have easily stayed here for a week.

The highlight of the lodge is its proximity to the mineral hot water springs and spas. They are immediately next door, a 2 minute walk away from a choice of two spa complexes. These are absolutely sublime; relaxing, luxurious and inviting.

The lodge is also next to the Mt Te Aroha. It was wet and raining when we were staying so we didn't climb the mountain or go walking on its many trails. However, it was beautiful to be at its foothills with all the midst flowing down from the mountain.

This is far better accomodation than any standard motel one could choose from. It's up there with the best in the world.

Te Aroha is a great spot for exploring the Thames area, and has plenty of interest on its own. Didn't meet Linda but I'll bet she's as friendly as Greg - super hosts. Rooms are small but comfortable, and there's a shared longe and kitchen if you want to spread out. Excellent location and very good value.

This was very disappointing. Don't believe the Lonely Planet description. They may have deserved a star three years ago but it's clearly deteriorated a lot since then, no doubt the impact of Covid has played a part in that. Unhelpful, offhand host who didn't seem to realise we had a booking to stay there when we arrived despite having exchanged several emails with me. On their website it says they offer breakfast and it also advertises that outside the building. In reality they don't and seemed bemused that I had questioned this. A fine, old Edwardian building once occupied by Jacinda Ardern's family but that's about all you can say in favour of this place.

Upon arrival we received a warm and welcoming greeting from our host Greg. Accommodation was clean and comfortable. Greg's knowledge and advice we're very helpful. A great location, within easy walking distance to shops, spas, walks, Domain Cafe etc. We would stay here again.

Beautiful setting, spotless rooms with lots of character. We can't speak highly enough of Greg who went above and beyond when we got ourselves in a bit of a pickle. He is a generous host and a lovely character. Be sure to take up his recommendation of booking a spa next door - just sensational! Thanks so much Greg for the wonderful stay - we owe you a Steinie!

Thanks to Greg for maintaining such a cozy place for a perfect go to place to relax. Enjoyed the mineral spa, literally next door. Will definitely be visiting again. Loved the decor and collection of loved items. Specially the old trucks and Superman ❤️

I have just stayed 2 nights and automatically thought the rate included breakfast!
Silly me!
Nothing welcoming, no flowers, chocolates nothing!
Very average room with light coming through the top of the curtains all night!
Bed had a cheap electric blanket under bottom sheet and I could feel the control panel under me!
Bed was average.
Noisy when you have others staying there as well.
Would NOT be going back.
Te Aroha Motel had far better facilities and welcoming gifts!

We have stayed in Te Aroha a few times but never at the Mountain Lodge. We found the room cold - one heater that pumped hot air up to the high ceilings didnt quite cut it in temperatures that were going below 0. We also found that with 3 rooms backing on to some sort of small kitchen set up (which we didnt use) it was incredibly noisy. Having neighbours with screaming kids who seemed to be in and out of the kitchen slamming their door every 5 minutes didnt help and obviously is beyond the owners control - but having to sleep and then wake at the same time as the neighbours was a pain. Would be nice if they could put couples in the same block as couples and families with other families - we wouldnt have minded the noise if we had had our tribe along for the ride...
Cant beat the location for the pools and the room itself was pleasant.

Have stayed at Aroha a few times now and it is a lovely setting and great place to relax and un wind. However after my last stay would like to offer some constructive criticism on some aspects of the stay,

I found Greg helpful but felt that he was slightly intrusive in that he popped into the lodge a bit too often, a bit more privacy would have been appreciated.

Greg I realize that I should have mentioned this when I was at the lodge, but I found a cockroach in the bathroom, as well as my bedroom and in the kitchen, in otherwords throughout the lodge.

Instructions on how to use the grill would be helpful, as it is difficult to use if you don't know and easy if you do, as it just a matter of opening the oven door slightly.

Because of the solitude and wonderful setting at the foot of the mountain, this is a special place that I would like to return to, so hope that the problems above were an aberation.
