Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We stayed at the Fire Station in Gore and showed up around 7:30 pm to find we had to get a security code from the neighbouring gas station, then pay for the room by slipping money under the closed office door. The rooms and kitchen/lounge were tidy and well equipped, but the whole set-up just felt a little sketchy. We chose our own room, the rooms had locks which could be locked from the inside, but no keys, so when we left to get dinner, we had to leave our stuff in an unlocked room in a hostel where anyone could enter by just asking the local gas station for the key combination. Finally, when we left in the morning, we left our main bags there for a few hours while we looked around town. When we came back, the bags had been obviously rifled through. We luckily always keep all our valuables with us, so nothing was taken, but it was very disconcerting to know that would happen. No one else was staying in the hostel at the time we left, the only person there was the manager who had been cleaning the rooms. Overall, a clean, realtively comfy place to stay, but did not feel safe and obviously not secure.

We totally agree with the 'poor' reference left by the visitor in Oct 2011. We booked a 'private' room 6 months prior to our arrival. When we got there, we followed the instructions on the walls (go to the shop to get the security keypad code and let yourself in - we were told by the woman in the shop that the manager worked during the day - but we were not asked for any proof that we were 'legitimate' hostellers). We let ourselves in to find a cold, empty hostel. It has a board just inside the door asking people to claim a room by writing their name down under the room number and to 'make themselves at home' Luckily for us, despite having 'booked' a room, because there was only one other guest, nobody else had claimed our room and we put our stuff in it. There is a huge security risk here. None of the rooms have locks on them, so in theory a person can go to the shop, get the code to let themselves in, go into any 'private' room and steal its contents. We were in two minds as to whether to stay in our room all day, to keep an eye on our stuff, our look around Gore. We decided to carry our valuables with us and leave our clothes in the unlocked room and go out. Mind you, going out was the better alternative to staying in. As the previous review says, there are no staff, the bed clothes looked dirty, the toilets had clearly not been cleaned for days (use your imagination as to the mess in the toilets and around the seats) and the kitchen was less than clean. The hostel was very cold and with no staff, unwelcoming. To pay, you are instructed on the wall to place your money in an envelope and slide it under a door marked private. At least that door was locked! We stayed in a lot of hostels in NZ, and this was by far the worst one for cleanliness, comfort and 'staff'. For those that do wish to stay here, the Gore Library, a minute's walk away, offers free internet and WiFi.

Made my booking through their website, and they were prompt in their reply. Its located just opposite the I-site, where the Intercity buses stop, so its very convenient. And how cool it is to stay at a place that used to be a real functional firestation! Anyway when I arrived at about 5pm the staff was there. If there is no staff there, yes, as what the previous post said, you have to go to a nearby shop, get the code, choose a bed, write your name on the board for the bed you've taken and then put your payment in the envelope and slide it under the Management's door (marked 'private'). The staff would be there from 5pm onwards. (Note: Only cash payment) They have 2 dorms, and 2 private (double rooms). There are hairdryers in the rooms, which is great. Also there are heaters in the rooms, lounge and corridors, and the whole place is really cosy. There's a TV and a piano, they have an adequate kitchen with a microwave and all, and tons of information of nearby sights and activities. Also, the hot showers (2 showers in all) are timed, which they say is to ensure that everyone gets a chance in the showers, and I think its a great idea to save water.. unless you like long cold showers :) I met some nice people there during my stay, which I think wouldnt be possible if not for the place being so nice, small and cosy. And I was travelling solo. Originally I booked 2 nights, but I extended 1 more, and will definitely stay there again the next time I am in Gore.

This was one of the more bizarre places I've ever stayed. When I arrived I was greeted only by a sign on the door telling me to go to a local shop (I won't say which one on here) to get the code to enter. The lady in the shop gave me the code without asking questions. A possible security concern! I let myself in and looked around: clearly there were people staying there, but they were out. So I followed the instructions on the wall and picked a bed then wrote up my name on the board. I felt rather strange being there, as if I was intruding. Finally the other guests arrived and I had a pleasant evening, but this was in now way due to the hostel. While the beds were reasonably comfortable, the whole place was a bit cold and empty. With staff there I've no doubt it would have been a hundred times better! I am also concerned that since the staff were obviously rarely there, that beds must go several days/guests without being cleaned. As does the kitchen and bathroom. I did as I was told (by the sign on the wall) and left the money in an envelope, but I was rather reluctant to leave the full amount having received zero service. In the end I did so, only out of the guilt I would have endured! Also, internet was slow and horrendously expensive. If you're in Gore and on a budget this is probably worth a shot, but at least make sure the staff are there first!

Recently we had the pleasure of staying at the Gore Backpackers, which is a converted fire station within walking distance of all the amenities and attractions in Gore. The staff made us feel very welcome, and the accommodation itself was very comfortable. As a converted fire station it has alot of character. Its a brilliant place to stop on the way through the main tourist route to either Queenstown or Te Anau. As far as NZ backpacking accomodation goes I could not speak more highly, it was clean, comfortable and the staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. Recommended!
