We had a restful stay at the Hoshino Aomoriya onsen resort.

The service, as expected from a Hoshino resort, was warm and top notch. This applied from check-in, to the restaurant service staff, to the housekeeping.

The rooms are spacious and very comfortable. We had a Japanese-style room in the main building which was convenient. Unfortunately, it didn't have much of a view as it was facing another block.

We visited during the cherry blossom season, and the large park and lake was simply beautiful. The park includes a foot bath, a stable for the resort's resident horses, a tea lounge, and a kaiseki restaurant.

The resort boasts two onsen. One is a 10 min walk away while another resides within the main block. The latter is probably the better one, as it offers both an outdoor and indoor onsen (the former is purely indoors) but it'll be more crowded due to its accessibility. I would recommend visiting at off peak hours (meal times, early morning, or late night) for the best experience. There's also a spa that offers an excellent massage at reasonable rates.

The food at the buffet restaurant was delectable. We didn't try the kaiseki restaurant which has a hefty surcharge.

All in all, a great option for families and couples. Convenient and it has a fair share of activities. Unlike the other Hoshino resort, the thematic focus is more on the cultural festivals of Aomori. The only downside is that it can get crowded at times when tour groups visit.

(This review is for the onsen itself, though the hotel was beautiful, well-kept, and the staff were exceedingly helpful in assisting lost tourists to the onsen!)

First off, location to finding the onsen was a little tricky. directions to the general area were easy enough (just past the misawa train station), but that general area (other than the komaki resort) was a bit confusing. there was an area for onsen parking, but no distinguishable markings to lead you to an onsen entrance. My husband and I walked further to the right of the resort and found the onsen symbol on a building that looked fairly run-down and out of commission, which it sure enough was. We finally decided to go to the hotel lobby, where they quickly directed us to a down escalator.

The "foyer" to the onsen was beautiful - the floats and little shops/restaurants in the hotel's lower level (where the onsen is located via escalator) are bright, inviting, and colorful. The cashier to the onsen was very helpful - our japanese was terrible so thankfully his english was good. We payed our money, got our towels (btw, towels are extra, though he didn't charge us this first time), and went our separate ways: men to the left, women to the right.

The changing/locker room was SO clean, well-kept, organized. there were lockers to one wall, aisles with large wicker baskets for your goods, and a wall of sinks and mirrors. You take your shoes off as soon as you get to the entrance, and proceed on in. After undressing, you head into the bath area, where you're welcomed by two large bathing pools, one clearly labeled Hot Water (42º), the other Tepid Water (39º, if memory serves me correctly). High ceilings, and to the edge of the pools (which lay side by side) are floor to ceiling windows opened part-way on each side to allow steam out/fresh cool air in. You have a beautiful view of their secluded koi pond and the open air hot bath area outside with a little fountain, and the entire area is secluded in it's own private garden.

The rest of the interior is comprised of an ample amount of bathing stations (soap, shampoo, and water buckets provided), where you wash up prior to entering the baths. It IS important to note that women should tie up long hair into a bun, so as not to get their hair into the baths. Shower caps are also available (free). The water is fantastic, and to each his/her own comfortable water temperature.

As you step outside, you'll see a walking shallow entrance to the outdoor open air hot bath. The combination of cool crisp air and hot water was perfect, as was the sound of the water fountain and the vista and koi fish. Privacy is no issue - the men's baths are adjacent but completely separated by privacy fences. Aside from the three hot baths, there is also a smaller, bathtub size area for cold water (it IS cold!), and it felt nice switching back and forth across the three temperatures. There's also an entrance to a sauna, very nice, very hot, but not really my thing.

After you're done (there's no time limits, you could stay till closing if you wanted), you wash up again, dry off, return to the changing room, and get dressed. Hair dryers are available, and I was told by my husband that they do have razors on the men's side. Lotion and other goodies are also there (my husband was raving about their hair oil, lol).

Overall this was an excellent and relaxing first-time experience with an onsen. I definitely enjoyed it (as soon as I got over my own personal hesitations about running around in the nude amongst other nude women). I recommend it for a nice, no-pressure first experience for any onsen!

We originally had difficulties in choosing if we should choose Aomoriya or another Hoshino Resort in Aomori for our 2-night stay but in the end we didn’t regret staying in Aomoriya instead because the resort has a wide range of facilities and activities which I am sure it can suit anyone’s purpose.

We chose the best special room called Unkan which has the best view on 12/F, large room size, an in room onsen, a double sink, shower and a balcony. The bathroom amenities were awesome and we enjoyed the room very much!!!

We chose the first night dinner with Aomori traditional drum dance performance and the performance was very entertaining. Dinner was so-so though it highlights the traditional countryside steamed dishes.

Our first breakfast was buffet with varieties of western and Japanese dishes.

Second night dinner was at the hotel restaurant Nanbu Magariya which is a small setting of the old Aomori residence with delicious dishes from the countryside and they were delicious.

We had breakfast at the same place the next morning and it was great with grilled fish at a fire place too.

During our stay, although they have shuttle bus to access different areas of the resort, we did a lot of walking ourselves as we enjoyed the walk around the pond with different things to see.

They also had a number of activities that you can join like riding on a horse carriage, outdoor public onsen with a view, flower viewing etc which we didn’t have enough time to experience them all.

All in all, we did enjoy your room and experience in aomoriya and will stay again should we visit the same area again in future.

Very understaffed place. Check-in can take 30 minutes or more. One onsen for hundreds of guests means that you can expect to be shoulder to shoulder with fellow guests. They even have a website to tell you the current overcrowding status of the bath (hint: from 7 PM on its permanently red).

This is a very child friendly resort. If you have kids, you will feel right at home. Small children are running everywhere.

The 5000 yen buffet is overpriced and very very average. Best dish is the beef stew (no joke, my group tried almost everything). Expect to be seated in a very narrow sliver of a space and bump around the food area with dozens of others all aiming for the salad bowl before it is empty. If this review hasn’t convinced you to book a different hotel for your “luxury” Aomori experience and you wind up here, best to cancel the buffet and have dinner in the bar area in the basement where very acceptable looking seafood bowls and ramen can be had for a fraction of the price and much more enjoyment.

The nightly show was billed as included (aka free) but when you arrive at the location you will find that the entire front area before the stage is roped off and they expect 2500 per person to sit there.

There is a semi-private lounge on the lake that actually resembles Hoshino “quality” but you need to make a reservation in advance. Guess what? All the best slots are already reserved well in advance. Also, it costs 1500 extra to use, if you can get a reservation.

This resort is already expensive; nickel & diming feels wrong. Not being able to use the onsen in the evening because of overcrowding is also rediculous.

Good news: rooms are clean, large and modern. Windows are dirty, but it is probably hard to clean them as they don’t open.

Worst customer service, I booked through their online, didn't realize it was non-refundable rate. I called to make changes to the reservation 2.5 months in advance of the trip and they wouldn't let me make any changes. I gave them a good reason but still won't make exceptions. I called 5-7 times now and talked to several different people, still wasn't able to get through. I read similar reviews from other people. Clearly, this needs to be addressed.

If you happen to be in Misawa, do not miss to visit this place. The lake's gorgeous, the Onsen experience was an absolutely delight, we enjoyed the buffet dinner. The resort has a lot of activities that guests can do. But you want complete peace and serenity, you can find it here as well. I would definitely come back again. See you this August. My photos cannot do justice, but believe me, this place took my breath away.

We had two wonderful nights at Hoshino Aomoriya resort during January. It is a great experience of the Japanese culture.
The resort is very well maintained and the staff are lovely.
We chose to drive to the resort from Aomori, exploring the area on our way. The resort offers complementary transfers between airports and train stations, it is easy to get to.

Upon arrival, we were welcome by a pony and Yukinko(Japanese snow child) at the door, such a special way to start our stay!
Then we were greeted by神慎太郎, he guided us to the lounge and check in for us.
After check in, Koyo Takeshita took us on a tour around the resort, showing us where everything is before bringing us to our room. Koyo Takeshita is very helpful, making sure all our needs are met before he left.

The resort is amazing, with so much to do! There’s a few accommodation blocks, and everything is well connected via underground passage.
They provide pyjamas and yukata rental(free for guest watching dinner show), we wore them to dinner and all activities inside the resort.
We did scallop fishing(must try), open air hot bath(best one we ever had), a ride at the horse wagon(ice cream & grill squid provided), learn origami, walk at the park with lantern, foot bath, watch Japanese festive dinner show, paint our own wooden horse, watch the Jawamegu late night concert! My kids loves the game centre while I enjoy shopping for local souvenirs.
The resort also organize day trips to surrounding area which can be booked the night before. There’s something for everyone.
The dinner buffet is really delicious, the grill life scallop, fresh sashimi, grill Japanese beef and tempura station are my favorites. Breakfast is equally good, featuring large variety of Japanese breakfast cuisines.

We were most amazed by the talented staff. We found 神慎太郎 not only working at the front desk, he’s also the Japanese drummer at the dinner festive show and later performing at the late night concert!
神慎太郎 also farewell us the next morning.
We very much enjoyed Aomoriya’s warm Japanese hospitality and hoping to return someday.

Open air bath faces a lake, which makes you feel like a pool at an ocean resort hotel. Room is OK, not like other very nice Hoshinos. But what is reaaly not like other Hoshino is the size of the hotel. Large number of rooms and obviously too large number of guests in "Hoshino standard". As a result, you can not enjoy the Hoshino hospitality. If just interested in staying at Hoshino as an experience, worth a value.

I have been travelling Japan for over 20 years and have stayed in various Hoshinoya hotels. However, this was the worst-ever experience which prompted me to avoid Hoshinoya chain in the future.

First, unlike before, there is no hotel staff or greetings upon our arrival and we have to carry our luggage ourselves. There is no problem on check-in until I asked for the booked dinner. Since we have meals planned outside, I only booked rooms without meals for 2 nights. Still, I changed mind and booked a table for buffet dinner via hotel website afterwards. However, I was told my table booking for 5 persons for buffet dinner is confirmed and that was only table confirmed but NOT THE DINNER. It's absolutely ridiculous. A table booked for dinner cannot be serving dinner. What should we do with the table, playing games or doing homework?? Ultimately, the reception sorted out the issue.

Second, also unlike before that a hotel staff will guide us to the rooms and explained the amenities and services of the rooms. There is NO MORE such services provided and we need to carry our own luggage to another wing which is about 5-mins walks and carrying luggages ourselves all the way to the other wing. Bad new was, NO TROLLEY found.

Third, I have booked rooms for 2 nights. As there is no guidance upon our arrival, we didn't expect we need to hang a clean-up card outside the door and I didn't notice such a card inside the room either. When we went back to room next day, the rooms were as messy as we went out. I called front desk and was told I need to hang the clean-up card. I of course told him I was not informed about this. He sent the housekeeping ladies to my rooms. She came and handed me towels and said "our towels" rudely. That triggered my temper and I told her to get lost if she was unwilling to clean up. She felt my discontent and quietly cleaned my room, but not the friend's room next door.

THE WORST-EVER EXPERIENCE WITH HOSHINOYA!!!
