We spent an amazing weekend in the Seaside Cottage. The accommodation is clean, comfy with an amazing view. The nikau trees in the garden are the final touch of this stunning place. All modern facilities are provided. Highly recommended.

We stayed in Blowhole cottage. The views across the bay of crashing waves are fantastic and being able to see glow worms a few metres from your door is special. The self check in worked fine. However that’s the best I can say. We paid more for this motel than we have paid for any other motel in New Zealand and it was by far the worst. Old and well maintained is not a problem but old, stained, tatty and dirty is. Although the carpet had been replaced and the bed linen was immaculate nothing else was clean. The whole place needs a deep clean and then a cleaner who pays some attention to detail. Even the dishcloth was dirty. The plates are melanine and are stained and there is very little cutlery. Some windows are fitted with screens and most have cheap blinds. Weirdly the bathroom has a screen but no blind and is overlooked. Most worryingly the smoke detector has been removed so I am not convinced that this place meets any health and safety regulations. The manager who happened to be on site clearly didn’t see the problem. If they hadn’t already taken my money we’d have left (which is presumably why they take it in advance!)

We stayed one night in the Blowhole Cottage. The view from the balcony was wonderful and the cottage is spacious. However despite an effort to update the cottage with a nice paint color, the kitchen and small bathroom are very dated. The bed is not comfortable at all and almost felt more like a double rather than a queen sized bed. I chose this motel based on the great reviews so we were a bit disappointed. I guess we picked an older unit. We feel we paid ($220NZ) on the high side for what we got but it is advertised as a motel rather than a hotel so lesson learned.

This beautiful cottage was one of the nicest surprises of our recent NZ adventure. It’s new, spacious and sparkling clean, with a large well-equipped kitchen, two comfy couches and a huge flat-screen TV. The sliders lead to a private yard with native bush, palm trees and a jaw-dropping view of the ocean and Pancake Rocks. We really wished we had an extra day or two in our itinerary to hang out here and relax - loved it.

The 4 rating is totally for the sea views from the clifftop deck which are amazing and offer great views of the shoreline and famous pancake rocks. Check in was interesting - self check in with key hanging on board with your unit and name. Land line was available beside check in board if there were any issues, but thankfully we didn't have to test it. Just happened to see a sign to glow worms as we walked to our studio unit. Later that night we followed the sign and walked about 25 feet into the forest to see the glow worms. Info about the walk and how best to see the glow worms would be an excellent addition. Now the opportunities - the studio could use a really good dusting. With the coastal moisture, there were dust collections everywhere and several surfaces that hadn't seen a cloth in quite some time. We didn't need to use the kitchen facilities but they could use some attention as well. The location was great, but based on other NZ accommodations the rate should have been much less than $190.

Room Tip: If you're booking a studio, #1 has the view. The cottages all seemed to have good views...
