Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We picked Sunset Cottage for us to stay and we were pleased we picked that room. It was located away from the main hostel and the room had private view to the ocean. The room was big enough for two of us. Has a small fridge, a kettle, coffee/tea, some plates and cutlery. You don't get milk though (was for sale at the reception). TV with Netflix and free internet.
Some people think it might be pricey but we thought it was a good deal. I would go back again.

Very welcoming place! Everything was well organised, tidy & clean. Gorgeous view of the sea. Handy to the local tavern. We were given useful information about places to visit. Our host, Lutz, went out of his way to assist us when we discovered we had a flat tyre & worse still, that we had no spare tyre! Without his assistance, I don't know what we would have done: he lent us his own car to take the damaged tyre to Greymouth to be replaced.

I stayed in the house bus whilst my parents stayed in the sunset cottage. Both really great, clean and pleasant. Bus is really cosy and just something a bit different, cottage has great views and a lovely little patio. Highly recommend either.

We were staying in sunset Cottage and it was lovely. Nothing in front of us just the sea. We were only staying one night but we were able to make a meal on 2 rings. The view was stunning and it was very quiet. There was a communal kitchen and lounge but we didn't use them. The owner preferred cash as payment. It was very close to the Pancake Rocks which were well worth a visit.

We took the Sunset Cottage which is a cottage separate from the main hostel building.
The cottage was clean and spacious with tea and coffee making facilities. There is a table with 2 benches outside, making it a perfect place to have a meal and enjoy the view of the beautiful sea, a view where you can spend hours looking at. The walk along the beach was enjoyable as well.
There is a kitchen at the main hostel area, equipped for simple cooking. This hostel is just about 5 minutes drive to the Pancake Rocks

Our room turned out to be a "converted" truck. The bed is five feet up (over the cab) with no ladder and no space to sit up. My husband had knee surgery two months ago and couldn't make the climb, so he slept on what could very generously be called a couch. The truck is very small, and there is no dining area despite the description on Priceline. There is no sink in the super tiny bathroom. No curtains on the window.

When we checked in, the desk person told us that this was the only room and that they had trouble with the description, but when I complained this morning, he said there were other rooms!

The location is lovely - the other rooms are probably okay; take a pass on the truck!

When you book a twin room you're not staying at the beachfront hostel but another house just up the road, no veranda which sunset views there. No towels provided and no extra's in the room, we thought the 72 NZD was quite expensive for this. Bathroom was allright and kitchen was clean.

We stayed here for 2 nights, unfortunatley the weather wasn't too good during our stay, constant rain and storms. Kitchen facilitys were excellent with plenty of space. There was a range of puzzles and board games which kept us entertained during the bad weather, there is however no TV.

On the whole, clean, nice comfy sturdy bunk beds, with shelves and individual lights, a plus for any hostel. A little worrying was that during our stay there were sandbags built up around the doorways, which gave the impression that they had experienced flooding previously.

Freshly baked bread and muffins are availible at a small cost, but beware Punakaiki has very little in the way of shops so make sure you bring food supplies with you. Failing that, there is a pub very closeby which does great food with a relaxed atmosphere.

Internet is availible, $10 for a wifi password or a put your money in the slot PC.

we were put in the 2nd hostel, 1/2 km down the road, so we weren't actually by the beach. as previously mentioned, the building is on sale. beds were sturdy enough (for bunkbeds) and the home made bread smelled nice. didn't buy any though so I don't know how nice it was. we were meant to be picked up from the bus stop but nobody turned up so we walked. wasn't far, but it was hot and we were carrying heavy bags so not fun! apparently we were meant to ring when we arrived, but we had already given a time of when our bus would arrive and a phone call was not mentioned on booking!we were not allowed to use the laundry until 12pm because they use it to do their own washing until 12. we stayed 2 nights and when we were going to put the washing in we were told to use the washing machine at the other hostel, which had an out of order sign on it. owner said it was working again now and said we could use it, but when he realised we had checked out and were not staying a 3rd night he moaned the hostel had a lot of washing to do and were busy. so basically, we couldn't do our washing and didn't feel like we could ask for a lift to the bus stop either (leaflet advertises free pickup/drop off). would not recommend staying here. i heard the YHA place is nice, but I'd recommend staying in the tavern instead. the staff are so friendly and they were the reason we enjoyed our visit to punakaiki and meant we had somewhere to escape from the moody owner!
