Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

First, the location your room overlooks the Tasman Sea, views as far as the eye can see. Second quiet and peaceful just 2 rooms here, and away from the crowds but 6 minute drive to town, the rooms are tastefully decorated and beautifully handcrafted furniture. You can tell the owners but a lot of love and hard work in building this place and it shows. The 2 units share a full kitchen so if you want to cook meals u can. They don’t have a closet BUT u don’t need one plenty of drawers and hangers to hang your clothes. Great welcoming touches like nuts and sparkling wine in your room, this place would rent for 500/night on the U.S. west coast easily.

We loved our two night stay at the Tasman Sea Retreat. Lovely hosts who have provided super, stylish accommodation and great attention to detail to make sure you have an enjoyable stay. The sunsets are stunning from the location up on the hill.
Sharing of the kitchen was not a problem, but we were fortunate to be sharing with a pleasant couple and between us we were flexible about when we used it.

Just spent a night at this amazing location.
The accommodation has two units with a shared fully equipped kitchen and dining area so it is absolutely perfect for a family or two couples traveling together. It just so happened that we had the place to ourselves and we loved it.
Located 10 kilometers north of the famous Pancake Rocks, the house is isolated on a mountain with a spectacular view of the sea. The feeling is of vacationing on a tropical island - very romantic and special.
Free WIFI and of course free parking.
The accommodations are lovely with a comfy king sized bed, nice modern bathroom and as mentioned a shared fully equipped kitchen, dining area and a balcony with a great view. Having dinner (with wine supplied complimentary) overlooking the sunset on the sea was a unique experience.

This place is off the main road far enough not to hear any cars (even if there were any). The fittings and fixtures in this self contained unit are very high end all the rooms have a great finish, large tvs, full sky, heaters, full kitchen, ranch sliders for every room out onto the deck and a view second to none. The hosts are really nice and friendly and they have to friendly playful dogs.
Would recommend in a heartbeat.

This location is remote being half an hour to one small town and an hour to Greymouth. It is 10 minutes to Pancake Rocks with its card and pub. The house is very new with well designed en suite rooms with adjoining kitchen. We had nice neighbours so there were no issues with the kitchen. It was nice to have the facility.
Nice balcony to sit out and see the rain.

Put simply, one of the best places we’ve ever stayed! Location is stunning; set on the hills above the coast road with breathtaking views from the deck (not to mention the spa hot tub!). The apartment is beautifully furnished, fabulous attention to detail and with everything you need. And completely private as you have the place to yourself. We felt at home straight away, starting with the personal welcome chalk sign over the door. Enjoying the evening views to the sea was only beaten by breakfast on the deck, listening to the waves crashing below, watching the birds in the garden of native plants and hearing their birdsong. We had a great chat with the owner Patrick, really friendly and helpful, and his lovely dogs. One complaint: we were only here for one night ;-) passing through to Abel Tasman. If we’d have known how fabulous it is here, we would have booked for longer! Can’t recommend highly enough, thank you for a wonderful stay.

From the welcome from Joe to the cheery farewell from Patrick and the two dogs this was an entirely pleasant experience!
The house and location are stunning, the accommodation is expansive and to be honest if the weather was awful you really wouldn't need to leave the apartment.... Fortunately for us the weather was stunning and we were able to spend most of our time enjoying the amazing outdoors on offer... We will defintely be back!!

So calm and peaceful. Well laid out and the bed was exceptionally comfortable. Beautiful stop for a night.
Went out for dinner at the Punakaiki Tavern and breakfast at the the hotel in Barrytown. Lots of fun and good ole NZ cooking.

A personalised welcome in chalk on arrival, a fabulously appointed apartment. Views views views! Very well designed and built. Lovely furnishings and homely comforts. My husband and I loved our stay. Relaxing in the spa watching the sunset and the waves roll in ...just perfection

Thank you Joe and Patrick

We have stayed at the Tasman Sea Retreat for one night in November 2019. The location of this property is perfect if you are driving from the Nelson/Abel Tasman National Park area to Franz Josef/Fox Glacier and you would like to stop for one night somewhere in between. The view from the room/property is absolutely stunning. Furthermore, the room and bathroom are very clean and nicely furnished. As other reviews have mentioned, while the bathroom is private, the kitchen area is shared with one other room - that did not really bother us, but it is just good to know. The owner was friendly and communication was timely (really nice with the self check-in so we did not have to worry about the time of check-in). The only reason why I feel this property is a 4 rather than a 5 is because the room was not really soundproof and we could clearly hear the conversations from the owners (who live on the same property, although the facilities are separate). I can still recommend this property to other travelers and I would return here if in the Punakaiki area.
