Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

My wife and I stayed here for a couple of nights earlier this month. We are both in our sixties and the other residents were in their twenties. We had a twin roo. With en-suite shower toilet for which we paid 230NZD. The room was great and very clean, the beds comfortable and the shower excellent. The kitchen living area was adjacent to our room and was not at all noisy. Maybe we had good travelling companions. You can cook if you want to. My wife and I used the various restaurants, taverns which were fine. One is a minutes walk from the beach and the thunder of the surf is super. Pancake rocks are a kilometre or so up the hill. All in all a decent if not luxurious place to stay. I should add that the supervisor is a mine of information and as others have said there are books and games to while away one’s time. There are a couple of local places to get milk, bread and some fruit but otherwise you need to bring in.

Very practically organised for the independent traveller with two kitchen areas well stocked with equipment and lots of eating areas, tables and benches. They also have plenty of games to keep you busy when the rain hits! Punakiaki itself is tiny and has no supermarkets or any outlets, so you need to bring everything with you. I don't know about public transport, it is far easier if you have your own.

Stayed here for one night. The room was quite small (but well priced) and the hostel is in a fantastic location. Bed were very comfortable and any of the staff we spoke to were extremely helpful and friendly. For the price we paid this hostel was great value and very functional, I would definitely stay again.

Don't come here if you want any sleep! I took the private room with the ensuite and was kept up pretty much all night by the other guests. The communal areas are open all Night and the soundproofing is non existent. On top of this, the room was dirty with dead insects and a spiders nest in the room. On the plus side, the bed was clean and comfy and the shower was good but that's it. AVOID!!!!

This hostel is for back packers who are happy to share rooms and facilities such as they are. Not really for the older generation (even with your own room). We had an en suite room next to the kitchen and next to a communal room and above the shower/toilet of the down stairs. Room was very small and not very clean (cobwebs, dead insects). Beds were OK and shower was good. Main concerns were the noise from fellow guests and very poor sound proofing generally especially from the down stairs toilet! Cooking odours permeated the hostel. This place is OK for those that don't mind being woken up throughout the night by over excited back packers! Dreadful. 1k walk from blow holes/pancake rocks. Very close to a beautiful beach/setting however there were a lot of sand flies.

Stayed in Te Hui house which is an annex of the Beach Front Hostel. It has been 30 years since I stayed in a hostel and I was a bit nervous. But, this was wonderful. Stayed in the first floor double with ensuite and the room was spotlessly clean and comfortable. There is only one other room on the first floor and you share a tremendously well equipped kitchen where there are two sinks, two ovens so you practically have your own kitchen each. The lounge and dining area was massive for a maximum of four guests. Felt really private and actually quite luxurious. Can highly recommend, especially for older travellers a little wary of the hostel name. Tip: there didn't seem to be any shops in Punaikaki so if you want to cook bring your provisions. Te Hui is beside the Punaikaki Tavern though which offers reasonably priced meals.

We made a reservation for a room with a balcony, we ended up with a room with a view on the road. Not very nice. To make this review short and sweet: a place to sleep and see the surroundings, nothing more, nothing less

I was lucky enough to get an upgrade from a dorm room to a shared room and had a wonderful nights sleep in a comfortable bed and large room. The only negative was the bathroom. Everything was wet all the time!

It is a small and very nice house, our room was clean. The shared kitchen was clean and very well furnished. The commune room is really pleasant with a big table in wood which give to the place a warm atmosphere.
