A hotel located at the top of a large hill having amazing views of the surrounding areas. During the summer the hotel has an open aired pool and jacuzzi which is a great touch. The hotel restaurant serves great authentic Italian food. Make sure to book ahead. Rooms are nicely decorated with a modern touch. Please note that this hotel is on a large hill so walking up and down is not possible. A car is required to access the local towns etc. for restaurant/shop as the hotel is pretty remote.

Arriving on the hilltop of this accommodation takes you through some beautiful vistas of Langhe. Opening the windows of the rooms was stunning. Our room looked across the valley to fmdistant hills.
We had been on a truffle hunt in the afternoon and the chefs in preparing our group dinner shaved our captured truffles on our entrees.
Food was sensational in the evening and well skilled staff.
Rooms are well appointed and clean. WiFi in our room area was sketchy so some WAP's to extend signal would not go astray.

We stayed in this great hotel in August with lovely views over the Langhe hills. Clean , well appointed and spacious rooms, swimming pool, which was essential due to the very hot weather and excellent food and wine at very reasonable prices. The staff were friendly and helpful and a big thanks to Fiorella who was charming and attentive at all times. We will definitely return!

The hotel is located on top of the hill in the small and unpersonal village of Santa Vittoria d'Alba. The hoteltower can be spotted from afar and is therefore easily to find and to recognize in the Roero Region.
However, the road towards it starts from a very busy road between Alba and Bra, with big shops (Decathlon, Bennet, McDonalds and other industrial buildings) which is not so appealing when you're on holiday (check Google Streetview). Luckily, traffic noises are hardly heard above and the village and hotelsite are very quiet. The town itself is really dead: we were there in the midst of July and we hardly ever saw people. There are no shops, no activity, nothing at all! The only cars we saw were all headed for the hotel or coming down from it.
The entrance of the hotel is promising, and (in contrast of other people's opinions here) we found the renovated and modern look inside very appealing! It is nicely done, very light and tasteful. However it is true that you wouldn't know you're in a castello once you're inside.
But then again, the Italian Castello is not by defenition the same as a "Castle". It just means it is a big mansion on top of a hill, so maybe people should adjust their expectations.

The lobby is big and warm and has lovely sittingcorners and shelves with wines and products of the region. The frontdesk however is small. The girl that welcomed us was nice.
We booked a family room, wich consists of a very large and very comfy bed (kingsize), and two sofa's which were converted into two single beds. These were also comfy and you wouldn't know they were sofa's. The children liked the beds.
The room is spacious and we had enough space to put our suitcases. Closetspace however, with only one built-in closet, was small. We did have some open shelves, but they're not exactly made to put clothes in, however we had to use them but it looked messy.
However big the room was, the flatscreentelevision is the size of a computerscreen...
The bathroom is small but modern and clean, and also quite pleasant with darker colours and nice towels. One sink for 4 people however is not enough, that was a shame. Why hotels still seem to insist in offering a bidet is beyond me! They could have saved room for a double sink.
The room was nice and modernly decorated in the same style as the lobby. We liked it. The window was a "castello"window and the only reminder of the hotel's past.

There are no facilities in the hotel.
The pool is outside and you have to cross a serviceroad and parkingplace to reach it. The views from the pool and small garden are lovely! It has a 180° view of the Roero, Alba and Barolo region. Very nice indeed, especially at night.
The pool itself is not so big. I don't know how many rooms the hotel has, but I suspect when it's full, the pool and the garden are too small for the guests. We only counted 11 sunbeds and 4 chairs and an umbrella at the poolside. Apart from a tree dripping with aphids there's no chance for shade, so a day by the pool means a day in the sometimes scorching sun.

Major disappointment: the pool is not heated!
Which can be lovely after an hour's bake in the sun: you pop in the freezing water, swim for two minutes untill you're cold and then you return to your sunbed. Only to repeat this every hour or so. This means it's not pleasant to be in the pool, if you don't move/swim, you get cold, even in outside temperatures of 35°C. This also means the pool in my opinion is not suited for small/younger children: mine love to swim and play in a pool literally for hours. Not possible in this one.
And although the pictures let you believe otherwise: you can't see the view at all when you're in the pool, it's not an infinity pool.
They also have an outside jacuzzi near the pool, however this is not heated as well. Well, it is... but only to 26°C and you wouldn't want to sit in a whirlpool of 26°C! Many of the hotel guests tried it, but came out within 1 minute of using it. There's no way of resetting the temperature either, it's blocked so the whirlpool was left untouched by almost every hotelguest during our one-week stay. As a result of this, leaves and dirt accumulated in it and made it even more unattractive to use.
The "garden" at the poolside is no garden: the grass is no longer there and you're left with dirt and mud around your sunbed. This could be easily solved by putting in artificial grass, it's only 30m². For a 4-star hotel I can't understand the condition the poolarea was in.
Most annoying: the wasps! I could count 30 or more wasps in the area where you use the steps to go into the pool. Ofcourse, in these hot temperatures they're sipping water from the puddles people create when going in and out of the pool. Nevertheless, this is not only annoying but most of all dangerous for children and the people using the sunbeds which are very close to the pool because of the small sitting area around it. And nothing was done about it! Again, unworthy of a 4-star hotel.
During our week's stay, we saw only ONE maintanance guy cleaning the pool with a simple hose for about half an hour. We didn't see anyone tending to the garden or taking care of the wasp-problem, no-one cleaning the appalling cheap plastic green garden furniture.
In fact, I counted the personnel in this hotel: one person at the frontdesk (who also has to take care of the bar!), two people at breakfast, two to clean the rooms and one person who tends to the pool once in a while. This makes the hotel look empty and unpersonal; they are almost all young people who don't seem to have any personal affection with the hotel itself. There's no manager or head of personnel in sight who feels responsable or of whom you'd think owns it.
In our previous hotel in Austria, also 4 star and with as many guests, I counted 32 staffmembers!
I must make an exception for the receptionist girl who tried her best and was friendly and must have a hard time managing the reception as well as the bar at night. I actually felt sorry for her.

We only tried the Castello Restaurant on the day of our arrival, because it was late and we didn't know where to eat. It wasn't a succes.
The restaurant is also refurbished in the same style, but here it feels rather cold and unpersonal. The tables are far apart from each other as if to fill the huge space, and the lighting is horrible. We saw two couples sitting at two tiny tables in a huge and unwelcoming rspace of the restaurant. They looked very happy (not). Also, it's not a place to have dinner with children and mine are actually well behaved. The only attraction is the view.
The choices to eat a la carte are limited so our enthousiasme was quickly tempered. There's also an option to have half board in the hotel, but we didn't book it and were rather glad we didn't at this point.
We did book a tabel at the Michelin-star Restaurant, also located on the premises of the hotel, but canceled it after our diner at the Castello Restaurant. We have been to fancy and highly rated restaurants with our children (and they are teens) before, but somehow we felt it would be different at the Savino Mongelli, although almost all reviews about it are excellent.

After diner (we always ate out at night, which does mean you have to go down and up the winding road every time - car absolutely necesarry!) we always love to unwind at the bar of the hotel for just one last drink. However, in this hotel there is a bararea, but no atmosphere at all. It is a shame, because the lobby has these lovely chairs and sofa's to sit in and enjoy a great Italian coffee, or a glass of grappa to just summarize you day. All this space and posh furniture and then do nothing with it, it's just a big big shame. As I mentioned, the receptionist also has to tend to the bar. So he/she has to come out behind the desk, go to the bar, make the drink and then has to go back to the desk. Strange. It always feels as if you're interrupting the receptionist and you're hesitant to order something. There's no music, no menu or drinklist with prices, no other guests or nothing. It's really very eery... They could do so much more with it... AND earn extra money too! A good bartender at night would make money, instead of costing.

Having no bartender also means that, if during the day you would like a drink, you also have to ask the receptionist. When you would like to have some wine in the afternoon, or an aperitif or a coffee, you order at the front desk and the receptionist gives you your tray with your drinks. You then walk through the corridors with your tray, trying not to trip or to drop anything. Afterwards you have to bring it all back to the frontdesk. Yes, again: this is a 4-star hotel!
Oh, and: you are not allowed to take the bottles, glasses or other things from the bar near the pool or next to your sunbed. Absolutely forbidden!
There's no ordering snacks, nibbles, small toast, nothing... nothing like that available either.

Ok, the breakfast buffet.
Great coffeemachine! Excellent coffee, all sorts of it, great chocolatemilk and hot water for tea. It's the best feature in the breakfastroom. There's no bread except for old slices which you have to toast, and two kinds of incredibly sweet and sticky filled croissants which I don't like.
You have a small selection of cold meats and a tray of cheeses (no gouda or other sliced cheese, only camembert, brie and gorgonzola types of cheeses). The melon goes nice with the Italian ham. Only scrambled eggs, no other hot dishes available, unless you want to boil your egg yourself but this wasn't popular I noticed. Tried the scrambled eggs just once, but didn't like the taste of it: as there's no kitchen in the hotel itself I guess this must have been precooked and vacuumpacked bought food, reheated in a microwave or hot water.
There's a whole selection of glutenfree products, which is a nice thing, but I never saw anyone take anything from it during our stay. There was this whole range and stack of things that no-one touched. Didn't see the point in offering that much of it, compared to the limited choice of the other food...
And then you have cereals, and pre-packed jams and yoghurts. It would have been nice if there were some home-made things, but it was all supermarket stuff - remember, there's no kitchen nor cook so breakfast is just offered to you, not made for you...
There's no service at the table, the two lazy and slow working girls only clear tables - don't bother asking them anyting.
Again: this is a 4-star hotel!

My conclusion: it's an average hotel and because of the lack of services and unpersonal feel of it, not at all worth the 4 stars! This also means that the price in my opinion is not correct.
It's clean inside though, but the cheap garden furniture, the unkempt outside space, the poor pool and poolside and the service is definately not on the same level as the recent refurbishments. Maybe it will follow?
I would not recommend it, because the pictures and the website let you believe you will have a luxiourious and elegant stay. You wont: it'll be nice and good enough, but nothing more. We weren't sorry we were leaving after one week: we were bored with it.

This was a really comfortable and nice 4 star hotel. Staff was very friendly and helpt us a lot of recommendations of things to do and places to visit.

Room was always very clean, however we had a balcony facing the woods and the 3rd night we noticed we had ants in the room, this was the same morning we checked out so don't know how they solved the issue.

View is stunning from the hotel. Breakfast is delicious. We liked that we got specific towels for the pool. Pool area was ok, however there was a huge problem with wasps so we didn't want to spend to much time there which was too bad since there was around 35-37 Celsius..

We stayed at this hotel years ago before it was renovated and found it charming. We hoped to relive our experience but were disappointed. The hotel has been renovated; however the furniture and closets are press board. The restaurants, however, we're the most disappointing. There are two: one has a Michelin star, and we were told hours after we checked in and not earlier that the restaurant was booked. The other restaurant guaranteed a spot for hotel guests. However, while a few tables were set aside for guests, most of the facility was reserved for others, and we received inferior food and terrible service at a very high price. We love Italy and have found exceptional hotels and fantastic food. This place, unfortunately, is a rip off.

We enjoyed staying here. We especially loved sitting on the lawn, overlooking the valley and enjoying a chilled bottle of local wine! The restaurant dinner was fantastic, but make reservations early. The breakfast buffet was diverse and delicious. The room was very quiet. The staff was helpful and friendly. The only reason I can't give 5 stars is because the wi-fi service was almost non-existent. These days, travelers really rely on good wi-fi.

I was hoping to be in a castle, yes the restaurant is in the castle but the hotel is a more resent building. The rooms are modern minimalist with fabulous views over the valley. Very quiet. The breakfast is in the hotel and was very basic.
Also no tea making facilities in the room.

Dear Mrs. Sydneysider02, we are sorry to know that you were not complitly satisfy by your stay in our Hotel. Yes, the original castle is where the Restaurant "Castello" is located. The rooms are in a more recent building and they were renovated in 2009. Our junior suites and the suite are have a coffee machine but in our room facilities is not preview the tea machine. The hotel bar is always open (till 1.00 in the night) to make tea, coffee etc... also with room service. We hope to see you again, thanks a lot for your interest. Kind regards

Let me start by saying we had a pleasant stay and were overall satisfied but there was lots of room for improvement.

Upon arrival the hotel looked very nice, the rooms are modern and clean, we even had Italian cookies as a welcome gift at the room, always nice. Rooms include large and comfortable beds but the pillows are downright afwul, they should really just incest in getting new pillows for each bed.

The bathrooms may differ, our room had a bathtub and detachable showerhead, our other room had a walk-in shower which was more comfortable and less messy when taking a shower. Silicon edges at the bathtub have to be redone as there was decay around the edges of our tub (no big problem, it was still in acceptable condition). Bathrooms were always correctly cleaned and showergels were present alongside a hairblower, soap and variety of sizes in towels.

The room has a safe and a great amount of space in the closets for clothes. There are enough power sockets available (2 by each side of the bed, 2 additional in room and 1 in bathroom). Our room was always cleaned correctly and we found the same welcome-cookies at each housekeeping visit in our room. A very kind gesture!
Residing behind each room is a small terrace / balcony which is nice to sit at and enjoy the view. This could be improved even more by putting 2 chairs there because we had to take our chair from the chamber and bathroom stool each time we wanted to sit on the terrace.

Swiming pool is large enough for a swim, has a great view and looks pretty. But unfortunately there are way, way too few chairs available. Sometimes you would wind up at the pool to find yourself not being able to get a chair. They could easily add some more chairs.
The pool is not heated and this makes the water very cold! You'd have to bake in the sun and get very hot for the pool to be refreshing.
The jacuzzi is large and works great.

Breakfast is the thing we least enjoyed from our stay. I doubt the freshness of some products. First of all, the two girls who serve breakfast are by far the least friendly of all staff at the hotel (other staff does a great job). It's a pitty to say but they look lazy and like they couldn't care less.
Some products weren't refilled from time to time and bread was old. Avoid the cutted fruit bowl, it tastes nasty and doesn't have the ripe bite of fruit as it should be. Mozzarella (which is a typical Italian thing!) was downright nasty, tasted like rubber and I've tasted packed mozzarella in Belgium which was better!
At the first breakfast there was a fewer than a quarter piece of brie cheese which didn't look new so I didn't take it. They actually kept it there for three days after until they replaced it by a new piece. Some goes for some other cheeses at the plate. Hotel has to provide fresh food and not let a small piece linger until it becomes rot.
Coffeemachine didn't seem to do a great job either since it would always mess up the quantity or quality of the coffee.

The hotel has a bar which is very cosy and cheap! 5 euro for a gin tonic or 7 euro for a great bottle of wine is a great deal!

Don't go to the accompanying restaurant, too expensive for the food you get and very unpleasant and dead ambience in the restaurant. We ate there once and almost didn't dare to talk to each other because of the cold atmosphere.

Wifi reception was great (with some downtime on signal) and hassle free to connect to. There is room to room calling over the room telephone and wired internet port is available in room. Tv only has Italian channels and no pay options.

It was a nice hotel but I'm not sure if we would book another stay here. The preceding year we booked a 4 star hotel in the Garda region and for more or less the same pricerange as our current stay here (same amount of days) we we're in a real 4 star accomodation which was far more luxurious.

That said we were overall satisfied with our stay and enjoyed our hotel. We were always treated and greeted in a correct and kind way, had a nice and clean room but breakfast and pool accomodation could be better.

Maybe this hotel would soothe your needs more if you were here for max 3 to 5 days instead of the full week lik we did.
