From the moment we arrived we were spoilt rotten by William and Carla. This place is truly a beautiful hidden gem. The food was amazing and I don’t think I’ve ever eaten so much, the wine was superb, ever detail in this place was absolutely amazing and I loved how you showed us the photos of it being built by your own hands. Stunning views as we ate our lunch and drank our wine up in the tower. Also a must is a walk and backpack with water and food at the Homunga Bay. The music is so relaxing as well as whole experience. Thank you Bo also for singing for us and you are such a beautiful dog ❤️ we enjoyed the spa with amazing views of the countryside and were privallaged to see the other rooms. Such an amazing 2 nights away will hopefully be back in summer

This is a stunning property high in the hills with amazing views and very comfortable rooms. The outside baths are superb. It's a good place to chill out and recover - you won't feel like leaving for day trips.

Being isolated up in the hills, you are kind of stuck with having their dinner. It was nice, it was fine, but it was not fine dining by any means. The portions were also a little meagre and no seconds were offered. Similarly at breakfast, the granola was nice but we were each given maybe a tablespoon and had to ask for more a couple of times. The ricotta pancakes were excellent.

Coffee is awful. A tiny automatic machine making coffee low on taste but high in caffeine.

The towels start to smell a bit when wet - presumably washed too cold with eco laundry powder. Astonishingly after leaving towels on the floor one morning, we found them not replaced but just hung up on the hooks to dry.

Still, I would go back again for the views and the baths and beds.

I have been meaning to write this review for some time now but have been busy trying to adjust to reality after our holiday to New Zealand! We travelled all over New Zealand stopping in the most luxurious places. However, when we stayed at Manawa Ridge and was greeted by Will and Carla nothing else even came close or really compared to this experience! You are instantly made to feel warm and welcome and part of their family. Matt my partner was a vegetarian, so no meat and no fish (nothing with a face!!) which could prove challenging to cater for, but Carla and Will just took it in their stride and went and bought some more fresh produce and cooked the most amazing meals!
We stayed at Manawa Ridge for Valentines night, the atmosphere was incredible. Matt doesn't normally dance but felt so comfortable there that we danced to 'Stay With Me' by Sam Smith under the stars. Matt was frequently overwhelmed by the place. Manawa Ridge is a unique setting and words really can't describe the romantic and almost spiritual environment that has been created.
Unfortunately, Matt recently died in a helicopter crash but the night before he was still talking about Manawa Ridge and if I had managed to write a review yet because the place had truly affected him. Make sure you visit Manawa Ridge if you are travelling to New Zealand it really is the most magical place in the world!!

Promise kept!
Marie and Matthew Chapman xxxx

This is an unusual place to stay that has some fantastic attributes. The views from the turret are breathtaking, and you could sit for ages enjoying the mix of mountains and sea. It is not a normal hotel - you are guests at Willem and Carla's house and you spend time with the hosts and the other guests. The accommodation is high end luxury; the bed was perhaps the most comfortable I have ever stayed in. The furnishings are all top quality although they may not be to all tastes. The food was excellent, although there is no choice, with breakfast in particular being superb, and much of it came from their gardens. The wine cellar - the physical one - is a must see, and there are plenty of excellent wines to enjoy. The views from the spa are very good. A really interesting experience, although it is certainly not cheap.

My wife and I had three nights at Manawa Ridge. We had a wonderful time. Whilst the accommodation is somewhat rustic the hosts Willem and Cara make the experience magical. You feel as you are visiting them at home. They are the perfect hosts. Food was all home cooked and delicious. There are only three suites and dining is family style so plenty of opportunity to make new friends. Not forgetting two wonderful dogs!!! Highly recommended

There are already so many excellent reviews so it is realy difficult for us to find the right words. We will do this with Tina Turner: Carla and Willem ARE SIMPLY THE BEST in all categories. We stayed there from 9th to 12th December 2015 and it was a great start to our 2 months trip in NZ.

Having spent 2 years planning our wedding in New Zealand we wanted to find somewhere really special for our honeymoon night - Carla & Willem - and Manawa Ridge was everything we dreamt of and more.

The location of Manawa Ridge is amazing - the structure overall is incredible - and our room (The Shire Suite) was unique - all put together from Carla and Willem's imaginative use of materials - and Willem's incredible talent for building things.

If we had been close family members the welcome could not have been warmer - Carla and Willem made us feel so at home within minutes of our arrival - and were so genuinely excited that we had chosen their venue for our honeymoon night that we felt like the most special couple on the planet.

Having settled into our suite, enjoyed the champagne (part of our honeymoon package) in the private jacuzzi - in the private garden - with views into the distant hills we then joined Willem and Carla, plus another couple, for pre-dinner drinks - and a tour of the grounds - which included a visit to Willem's hand built, and very impressive, wine cellar.

This was followed by the most romantic, candle lit, dinner in the tower - with 360 degree views along with some fantastic home cooked food - much of which is grown on the premises.

It is difficult to express in words how wonderful our stay at Manawa Ridge was, if you are looking for somewhere for a special occasion, and can get to New Zealand, you will find it very difficult to find anywhere better.

Carla and Willem - thank you both so much for making our wedding night so memorable and special - we will never forget it.

We thoroughly enjoyed our three night stay at Manawa Ridge. Willem and Carla are wonderfully warm and inviting hosts. Their home is incredible - beautifully designed and situated on a hilltop with unbelievable views of the surrounding countryside and distant ocean. Carla's beautiful stone carvings can be found throughout. We stayed in the Rivendell Suite, large and beautifully decorated with an outdoor (covered) spa bath lined with stones. Dinners and breakfasts were exceptional, made with delicious and fresh ingredients and cooked perfectly by our hosts. (My husband is still talking about Willem's home made sausage.). We cannot say enough wonderful things.

On things to do in Coromandel ... During our three-day stay, the weather went from great to awful. Day 1: Hiked 4 hours to Wahai Beach. Highly recommend this - one of our best hikes in NZ. Willem very nicely drove us to the start so we could have our car waiting at the beach when we finished the hike. Day 2: Weather started to deteriorate so we drove north, missed the morning rain and did the hike to Cathedral Cove. Also recommend this. Day 3: Worse weather we've ever experienced, with gale force winds and driving rain. Zero visibility. We stayed in the Turret room at Manawa Ridge and hung out all day using wifi. Nice being able to use the spa bath outside (it is covered) even though the rain was relentless. If there had been good weather, we would have biked the rail trail. So, plenty to do in the area.

All in, gorgeous and wonderful. A great way to end our long holiday in NZ! Many thanks from Andy & Mira.

Wonderfully decorated rooms. The lovelies hosts you will ever meet. Excellent cooking and scenery. If you are looking for a place to retried, relax and be spoiled in every way, that's the place to be. The house is there little paradise which they built by them self and you feel that in every way.
