Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Just returned from a visit to South Island and came across the House of Ball, Winery and B&B.
Awesome experience and hospitality, the best I have found in NZ South Island so far.
Julian and his wife Lynda prepare superb tasting food accompanied by their own very good wine.
They are great hosts and company, whether tasting wine, discussing wine or even looking at the exceptional mesmerising view and sunsets from their B&B.
Highly recommended!

We took our niece on her first trip to New Zealand and planned to visit the north east of the South Island. Our first two nights were spent at this B&B in Waipara and it was ideal for our purposes.
Separate from the main house it consists of two cosy and comfortable bedrooms with a central bathroom.
The main house is stunning and hugs a hillside overlooking small vineyards. The views from here are just beautiful and on waking the next morning I could lie back and watch the sunrise.
Julian and Lynda are lovely people who are always willing to spend time sharing local knowledge. They also went the extra mile to accommodate my dietary restrictions.
The Waipara area is well worth a visit if you enjoy checking out wine regions.

The House of Ball is boutique winery and B&B run by Julian and Lynda Ball. If you are looking to get a taste of rural New Zealand while basking in all the home comforts with fine food and wine, this is the place to go. A friendly welcome is followed with a hot drink or the first of many samples of their wine.
Our accommodation included a well appointed Queen room with ensuite and a magnificent view over their property and the distant hills.
Dinner was shared with our hosts, with each course matched with their fine wine.
An excellent cooked breakfast is provided to start the day.
Julian and Lynda have shown what the B&B experience should be. I would highly recommend a stay at the House of Ball

First let me say that Julian and Lynda are very nice people. BUT to advertise their home as a B&B is false advertising. We had a room with a bathroom. When we left for a day of walking through vineyards we expected our room and bathroom to be tidied up. DID NOT HAPPEN. Our room and bathroom were not cleaned. We were lucky that the weather was mild and sunny. When we came back from our hike in mid - afternoon there was no place for us to relax/read except our small bedroom or outside on wooden benches. The house was locked up and was never made available to us.
We paid $90.00 for a dinner with Julian and Lynda - we got over cooked roast beef, potatoes and sliced carrots. House of Ball wine was OK at best. I would not buy a bottle. Breakfast very below most B&B standards, coffee was not drinkable.

My husband and I spent one night here and loved it. Lynda and Julian are delightful hosts and provide an atmosphere akin to visiting long standing friends, in their own home. The room was spotless, nicely furnished, with a phenomenal view of the valley and vineyards below. We were offered a full English breakfast the morning of our departure and it was perfect. Highly recommend and a short drive from Christchurch Airport.

My wife Dorothy and I spent a wonderful two days and nights at Linda's and Julian's beautiful home in Waipara wine country. Their home is outstanding with fantastic views of Waipara Valley. The room we had was beautifully appointed and very clean. We had two breakfasts and one dinner with them. The food was superb and we really enjoyed ourselves. We would recommend this Bed and Breakfast to anyone.

After 6 weeks in Australia & NZ we chose House of Ball for the second last night. Thoroughly enjoyed the stay. We had the twin bedded room. Spectacular view from the bedroon...especially the carpet of stars at night(saw a falling star) and rising sun in the am. Clean & comfortable.
Julian & Lynda were great hosts..there with a glass of wine upon arrival and pleasant company over a lovely dinner of various wines, onion soup with crostinis topped with melted local NZ brie cheese, roasted lamb with mint sauce and fresh veggies and ice cream & fresh fruit...yum.
Brekkie was good...good choice of cereal, fruit, yogurt and scrambled eggs ...that I know were very fresh.,bacon & toast.
Enjoyed the setting...farm animals, vineyard, exterior yard & patio, interior decor, and Kayla the visiting scottie dog, I even got to see a hedgehog au natural.
I would definitely recommend House of Ball...great place to kick back and enjoy the spectacular NZ vistas and wine.

House of Ball provided exceptional hospitality in a stunning setting overlooking the Waipara Valley. The welcome, the meals and accommodation were all excellent and the wines, and thoughtful wine discussions with our very knowledgeable hosts, Lynda and Julian, were a delight. They provided great advice on places to visit and things to do in the area and really shared their passion for wine and winemaking, their animals and the area with, great humour. This exceptional experience is a must for anyone wanting understand NZ and Waipara better.

The House of Ball is the most beautiful B&B bar none. Not only is the location and accommodation amazing, the hosts, Julian and Lynda are so friendly and welcoming. Nothing was a hassle as we got ready for our wedding and came back for photos after. I can honestly say that we have never enjoyed accommodation as much as we did at the House of Ball. It was exceptionally clean and well furnished. We would recommend this accommodation to anyone we meet and can't thank you enough Julian & Lynda for everything. It was truly an amazing place to stay to start our married life. As the cherry on the top, the wine is simply spectacular.

House of Ball is a must for those looking for a special and wonderful experience. Everything about our stay was first class and unique. We thought the view, the food and the wine were outstanding. Smuggled a few bottles in our luggage to bring home. Lynda and Julian were fantastic hosts and really top people. Thank you so much for this sensational stay guys as we will remember it for along time." A very cool banana "!
