Many of the reviews for motels and guest house seem to be mixed up. The guest house is a large wooden building. It does not have a concrete wall or any units in it. Anyway the guesthouse is now in the hands of a great host who values cleanliness above all else. Waimate South is lucky to have him.

It was only one night so I stopped. First impressions, I was surprised at how lacking in care the place was, with a car covered in lichen (or some such) parked in front. The foyer was quite dark too. I've tried to think of some positive points, but couldn't get to giving this place two points, mainly because of its lack of cleanliness. There was dust and grime everywhere. Positives : the room (#1) was spacious (2 bedrooms) and quiet, and the bed was comfortable; the shower had reasonable hot water and pressure. The heater worked okay, and was much needed because of the concrete block construction, with metal framed doors and windows (no protection against the cold). Sadly in need of a good clean and some fresh paint.

By arrival the office looks quite run down upon entering, one was taken over by the cigarette smell. The unit looked ancient and never updated after they were built. The layout was strange basin outside the bathroom and one could see mold in shower, towels strongly smelled after cigarette smell and looked old. But when the TV did not work went to the office and the hostess came over and put it on again she was really rude. We were told to leave it on the same channel and not touch it afterwards. The beds were of bad quality and sunk when as you slept. It was very quiet and almost looked like deserted township. We truly were happy when morning came and were able to leave.

Response from 98catscan, Manager at Lochiel Motel & Guest House
Responded 15 Jan 2016
Oh Dear! I think you must be confusing us with somewhere else you may also have stayed. Although we do have an old style office area, it is - in an Edwardian house. We do not have any rooms or units with a layout as you describe. There is no bathroom with a basin outside of bathroom, and most certainly - no poor quality beds.

The one bedroom unit was (we were told) all that was available for two people although no sign of any other guests. Guesthouse and breakfast unavailable. Very dated (1970's). concrete block walls, toilet area walls showing mould. Shower wall peeling off. $95 but try elsewhere first
