Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

For the money you’re paying it feels like you are getting a backpackers hostel with no frills. The location close to everything is what’s driving the price up but if you have a car look around for quality at the right price.

Room was a very small en suite which was very hot during the day with only an electric fan supplied but at night it cooled down sufficiently to let you sleep. The bed was well worn and the mattress needed replacing.

Walls are paper thin but the general area for kitchen use or just sitting around allows you to enjoy fantastic views of Mt. Cook. Car parking is fine.

Very close to an information centre where tours can be organised and beside the Hermitage Hotel where a lot of the tours leave from so ideally placed.

We stayed for 2 nights. The interiors were dated but so very clean. This lodge has a large kitchen with 2-3 stove ovens and 2 BBQs outside. Plenty of space for large family groups to self-cater. I would highly RECOMMEND bringing your own KNIFE! They have lots but as with most lodges/motels, communally shared knives are not very sharp. They have tidy bins for recycling, food scraps and rubbish.

I would most definitely stay there again.

The Aoraki Mount Cook Alpine Lodge is situated in the stunning Mount Cook National Park, offering an unbeatable location for nature lovers.

However, the rooms are small and quite expensive for what they offer, resembling backpacker accommodations with a premium price tag.

The kitchen is reasonably well-equipped, and the large lounge windows provide spectacular views of the mountains.

While the location is a major draw, the overall experience is underwhelming and not worth writing home about.

Great view from the room, with everything you need for a comfortable stay. Unfortunately, both the old and the new Wifi offered terrible connection which lasted only a minute or so at a time. Secondly, and the worst part, was the constant slamming doors as people (presumably staff) went in and out of the private room next door, and the exit / entry doors to the hallway. This went on late into the night and started up early in the morning. As the doors slammed, our doors shook. Was a real disappointment, we wouldn't stay again or recommend to anyone.

My daughter and I stayed at the lodge for 2 nights in a twin room. The room was a little small but it was convenient with an ensuite bathroom. The bed was a bit soft for me but it was still comfortable enough. I would say the only real issue with the rooms is that the walls are not well insulated as you can hear the people in the room next door. The best aspect of the lodge is the generous shared kitchen and lounge with an outdoor deck looking out towards Mt Cook. In pre-Covid times this would be an excellent spot to socialise; it was still sociable but people were a little cautious about mixing. The staff were helpful and friendly so all in all it was a good stay.

Very clean, accomodating and well appointed little lodge. Small, no frills but cosy and everything you need. I had booked 2 mountain view Queen studios on the ground floor as I was travelling with my mum who couldn’t manage the stairs. These were perfect, with glass sliders facing Mt Cook and the Aoraki range and a small outdoor setting to enjoy the view with a glass of wine. We still enjoyed dinner at The Hermitage without paying the huge hotel price tag.

We had a superior King room. The bed was very comfortable but as this lodge is actually an above average back packers the rooms are very basic with thin walls.
Everything was well run and the communal room a good size and a real suntrap and well stocked with basic kitchen needs. Would use again .

Expensive, but very convenient to see Mount Cook and surrounding sites. We had two rooms next to each other for our family of 4. Rooms were very small. The shower style is one where the entire bathroom floor gets wet if the shower nozzle is not pointed in the right direction. The upstairs kitchen is very convenient, and has a beautiful view. Our preference would have been to stay at the Hermitage hotel, but they were sold out. We were lucky to get these rooms. The restaurants are located in the other nearby hotels.
It's very costly for the amenities provided. The only reason we stayed there was due to location, and we were glad we did. Our stargazing activity was cancelled due to weather, and we were able to grab last minute availability at 10:30pm the next day because we were staying near the pick-up location. If we were not on property, there's no way we would have made it in time. Same thing happened with our helicopter scenic ride. Ours was delayed due to wind, and because we were physically close, we could be flexible and make the later time option. Mount cook is absolutely stunning, and we would stay here again just to ensure we could see and do everything.

Slightly older accommodation. The room was fairly small and there was only a microwave for cooking but there is a large shared kitchen upstairs with plenty of utensils and appliances. We also found that we could hear people in the next rooms. The staff were very friendly and helpful. There are no shops at Mount Cook so pick up supplies beforehand

A great place to stay if you want to cook for yourself. Amazing view from the communal area with a great balcony. Room was clean and comfy and also had the view ( room 9 !) . Kitchen has loads of equipment for any cooking and lots of fridge space for your food . Highly recommended in this price range . No supermarkets so buy food on the way or eat at the hotel ( amazing food ) for all you can eat buffet

Quite unlikely at that time of year. Only the Lindis Pass could be an issue if there was a particularly cold snap of weather at just the wrong time, but I think you'd have to be very unlucky.

Yes, there is definitely one other place (Mountaineers Cafe), and I think one more. However, those are the ONLY options for everyone, so reservations are important. But this lodge also has a kitchen so you can make your own food too. It's accessible to the track, but it will add about an hour onto your journey.

Can you advise if there is a small supermarket for supplies to cook in your shared kitchen Thank you Jenny
Doncaster, United Kingdom17 contributions2 helpful votes
I don't remember a supermarket. I do know that the Lodge itself sold a few basic supplies at its reception desk. There are several good places to eat that aren't too costly.
