Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Far from impressed! Went to pay for lunch, you can’t pay with cash (NZ legal tender) must pay with a credit card then they add 2% on top to cover the credit card fee. We were greeted with a terrible attitude from a FOH staff member when we question the payment terms, then serviced stone cold soup, no sorry but basically told to suck it up and move on. Sad to see the pre covid mentality is coming back into the tourist hot spots. Terribly disappointing!

Hotel's Favourite
Our 2nd visit and the hotel is still wonderful to stay in. Room well presented and cleaned and maintained beautifully. The view which you cannot stop, looking at . Oh and all hotel staff were beautifully presented and friendly. Makes such a difference to see a smiling face or two. We ate dinner (buffet) and breakfast … all food and service could not be faulted and selection and freshness of all dishes is to be admired. Plenty for adults and children to eat. Well done to all who work at the hermitage. I left feeling sad to be going. We did the glacier explorer tour with the hotel and once again it was well handled by all staff from the hotel through to boats and bus driver.

Recommended to us by friends who visited here a couple of years ago. Did not stay in the main hotel but in a sister property, a nearby motel that is affiliated with the hotel. Room was very comfortable with a great view of the nearby mountains which are amazing. Chose the bed and breakfast option and had a fantastic breakfast at the main hotel.

Room Tip: Only hotel/motel in the park. A little pricey but worth it.

Until now I hated buffets. This display of beautiful fresh food was perfectly organised , well lit just the right amount on display and supported by a Chef and crew proud of what they have on offer. It seemed to set a tone that the guests didn’t rush at the food as if it was their last meal - thank goodness. Congratulations !!!

We enjoyed an exceptional buffet at the Hermitage Hotel. Chef Anand was incredibly helpful, answering all our questions about the food. The hotel's location is stunning, offering a picturesque view of Mt. Cook from the patio. It's the perfect spot to relax with coffee and snacks while soaking in the breathtaking scenery.

Lovely welcome from Morgan and Eddie on reception. Gave us all the details we needed. Our room was on the 8th floor and had a panoramic view of Mount Cook. Large, comfortable bed. Breakfast was in the buffet restaurant and had plenty of choice. there are not enough coffee machines for the busy times and this was made worse by one machine only giving out hot chocolate for the 3 days we were there. We ate in the panoramic restaurant one evening. The food was good even if the portions were not large. The service was a little on the slow side and the temperature in the restaurant far too cold. Overall, a close call if worth the money. Next night we were in the buffet which had a good choice and decent quality. Again the ambient temperature was on the cool side. I am normally warm in hotels but even I was cold in both restaurants. The Snowline Bar was less cold and a nice place to sit with a beer and mountain view. We walked the Hooker trail which was great fun on an easy path, although I would recommend trainers or good sandals.

We didn't stay at the hotel (we stayed at the Aoraki Court just down the road) but walked to the Hermitage each evening and had a beer or two at the Snowline Bar. The view is stupendous. The beer is pretty good as well. It is a very popular place but plenty of seating to take in Mt. Cook and its range.

We booked a premium plus room in the Aoraki wing and were on the 9th floor. The view in the morning from our bed is why the 4 stars. Breathtaking. The room was spacious and cannot fault it. One night we had a meal at the Panorama restaurant and it was excellent. We also had a drink at the bar and a snack one day at the cafe - so we struggled to understand some of the criticisms of the rooms and food. Maybe we were lucky. We did some short hikes from the hotel as well as the Hooker trail a short drive away. Thoroughly enjoyed the walks - even in the rain one day. The hotel really has few (no?) facilities to provision you at all so if you need drinks for hikes, snacks etc - buy and take them with you - a lone vending machine had only water in it. Breakfast , the choice of both hot and cold items was very good. Very busy with a large number of people and for some reason apparently only one poor quality coffee machine that causes a queue, one day ran out of mugs (but if you ask you can get a decent coffee brought to your table for an additional charge - not well advertised). And of course as at many hotels a social gathering around a continuous toaster that people gather around and laugh at how useless it is as they pass their bread though 2 or 3 or in one case 4 times - why hotels don't simply have 3 or 4 standard machines that work - with a bagel setting - is beyond me. To be fair one hotel on our stay did. One guest who has stayed their many times summed it up - you are paying for the view. So make sure you get a room with a good one.
