Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We felt this property was way overpriced. I understand I may need to pay a premium for the location, but I think it was still overpriced. The public areas were nice, but the rooms and hallways need a serious refresh. The halls felt like I was in a hostel. Ugly plain brown indoor carpet on the floors and also half way up the walls!?? The rooms were clean, but very dated. Overall, depressing feeling. The buffet was expensive, but did have a big selection. The food quality was average. Again, not worth the price. We talked to someone that stayed at another property in the area and they were happy with their choice for a much better price.

Our 2nd visit and the hotel is still wonderful to stay in. Room well presented and cleaned and maintained beautifully. The view which you cannot stop, looking at . Oh and all hotel staff were beautifully presented and friendly. Makes such a difference to see a smiling face or two. We ate dinner (buffet) and breakfast … all food and service could not be faulted and selection and freshness of all dishes is to be admired. Plenty for adults and children to eat. Well done to all who work at the hermitage. I left feeling sad to be going. We did the glacier explorer tour with the hotel and once again it was well handled by all staff from the hotel through to boats and bus driver.

Jaw dropping view of the southern alps…beautiful building, friendly staff. Very cosy respite from the winter chill after walk up to the spectacular frozen lake below the glacier. No hot chips available, snacks are platters and high end. Be warned - not cheap…

We were amazed with the location of this hotel, right inside Aoraki National Park - at the head of the trail that leads into Hooker Valley. The rooms have amazing views of Mt Cook/Aoraki and the service was solid. The only thing holding me back from a 5 star review is that the rooms are somewhat spartan and dated, but they are super clean and cared for. The food in the buffet is ok. We highly recommend doing a "dark sky tour" for stargazing in the evening. Very informative and fun.

Just had night at The Hermitage Mt Cook with my husband of 55 years. A fantastic experience. Great accommodation, staff and meals. Would highly recommend. Plenty of walks if you are able to do them. We couldn't unfortunately.

Our view rooms, high in the hotel’s tower, were superb. The opportunity to gaze on the mountain and its surroundings from this viewpoint was something I will always remember. This room type was large enough for a group of six to enjoy coffee or cocktails together with the provided sofa and armchair, all gazing out at the mountain landscape. Our full day in Mount Cook was rained out, and that left us with little to do. The hotel could benefit from having an exercise facility. Breakfast and dinner in the restaurant are buffet style. The food was very good, but the need to go and fill one’s own plate detracts a bit from the fine dining aspect of the experience. In addition, dining is very expensive, which I understand as it is in such a remote location.

Though we spent only one night, we went for the stargazing tour which was absolutely amazing. The property is sublime and very pristine. We woke up to alpine birds singing and very little noise even though they are renovating a portion of the main building. Definitely will return and spend at least 2 nights rather than one. Do take the meal plan as it takes the chore of figuring out where or what to eat for meals. As mentioned above, stargazing guides super and very informative, we saw the museum after breakfast, and when we return we’ll take in the planetarium experience.

This is our 3rd visit to this hotel. This time we were so disappointed with service from the front reception. Checking in was so dead cold, no smiling, no information provided except we have to ask. The worst scenario is this time hotel has no porter or bell boy to assist guests. When I ask for assistance with the luggages, lady at reception desk just say no, they don’t have the service. This hotel is so complicated in layout, have to walk quite far to get to the rooms. She gave us a piece of little map. And we have to find our own way to the room, and carried our own luggages both way - Checkin / Checkout Room is out of date. Looks so old. Dining was well present. Buffet breakfast and dinner were good. Staff at the dining room were very professional. Never go back again and will not recommend our friends and family to this hotel. That advertised themselves as 5 stars hotel in Mt. Cook. So disappointed

We had a very bad experience at the hotel right from check in wherein one of the members of our group got a room in the motel which is a kilometre away. The vehicle that was to pick us up broke down and we requested the staff to extend the check out for a couple of hours from their check out time of 10 am. the front office staff especially Ms. Tiana was unhelpful she made sure that we are charged for the extra hour

The feeling of this venue was that it was just trying too hard and not just not listening properly. We had a problem with the phone which we reported but wasn’t fixed during our stay. As far as gluten free meals go unfortunately there was only buffet style dining available so I’d mentioned a need for gluten free meals, including the risk of cross contamination. Some sort of translation issue resulted in one of the wait staff hovering behind me with clean serving utensils. Thankfully the chef was on hand and able to direct me to the ‘gluten free by ingredient dishes’, which I was then able to be served from the dish in the kitchen. All a bit of a drama really. Then breakfast saw the typical gluten free toast accompanied by the communal jam pot 😩
