Visited Nov 2023 with 6 birth camper on powered site.
First off, this is probably the smallest, most basic site we stayed on in over 3 weeks of touring.
Check in was fine, not the most welcoming we had in NZ but lets just say we got a spot. Any spot will do it seems which was a first. "just park anywhere".
Location is excellent with a very short walk into town. This is a big bonus when you have a large camper as unhooking and parking in town is all a bit of a pain sometimes. This site offers the perfect location in Methven.
Driving into the site it's very small. Looks like a couple of long term residents are there and the entire site is surrounded by tall trees. So no views to speak of and compared to all other sites we stayed on, it felt a bit claustrophobic.
Facilities were all very clean and worked ok.
Worth mentioning is the dump station is right in the entrance road which is only one large vehicle wide. So you need to pick your timing so as not to hold others up. We were fine but can see it being an issue at peak times.

The Good - location is great right in the heart of town, easy to walk to shops etc, the park itself and bathrooms were clean, wifi excellent signal and well priced.

The Bad - the park itself is rather small considering what is on offer it is definitely overpriced. The bathroom is unisex and considering the price you pay to stay the night it seems a bit much to pay for a shower, you can't have a cold shower for free either. Don't even bother doing laundry if you don't need a dryer fine but it took us $8 to dry a load of clothing! For $2 you get 14 minutes. The lady at reception ice enough but not overly knowledgable when asked questions regarding the town instead she told us to go to the towns information centre. Not a big deal but thought worth a mention.

All in all I wouldn't recommend staying more than one night unless necessary. Especially if you have children.

Thank you for writing your first ever review on our campground. We are glad you agree that we have the best position in town and that we keep it very clean and have excellent and well priced WiFi. These are all true. I will address another issue before I go on with your review – based on your fraudulent activity during check-in. When you checked-in, you completed the check-in form marking 2 adults and 2 children. When you walked out of the campground a little later, we counted 2 adults and 4 children – 2 children were sent out to the footpath separately but joined your group just up the road so as not to raise too much suspicion. You were challenged on this and made an excuse that two of the children were not originally staying but now are – Hmmmm. I am guessing this is the real reason for your review. Fraud is fraud and comes in many shapes and sizes. We do challenge guests who make false claims on their check-in documentation as this affects us greatly. For someone who works in your industry, I would expect you have a sound understanding of the meanings and implications of fraud. We are leaving this review up for your superiors to read about your activity. Abisko Campground is a small boutique campground (from our website) situated in the heart of Methven. Yes, it is small – we know this and we pay attention to the details. Our pricing is based on value, rather than the cheapest. We are not the cheapest campground in Methven – guests check us out, go to the others and then come back and spend that few extra dollars. We do not do long-termers and our park is tourist and family friendly. Many comment on how quiet it is – we work to achieve this. Pricing wise, well we can compare the apples to something closer to home for you. We charged you NZ$63.00 for your stay (2 A & 4 C). Three Snowy Mountain Campgrounds charge NZ$79.00, NZ$102.00 & NZ$114.00 for the same amount of people on a powered site in the winter season. So, we are almost half the price of some of these places. Overpriced? Really? I am not sure who would want a cold shower after a day carving up the slopes of Mt Hutt in the middle of winter… Get my drift… Most want to soak in the piping hot spa or roast it up in the sauna – never ever has anyone wanted an ice cold shower before. Our laundry is well priced also for commercial sized machines. We are so confident with this pricing that we actually advertise the commercial laundry down the road for anyone who wants to go there instead – our price is the same and you have the convenience of well maintained and near new machines. I washed two loads in Venice Italy once, cost me over $80.00 – the cost of laundry outside your own home is expensive; it’s part of the expense of having a holiday. Courtesy of www.sadieslaundry.co.nz, the cost of a 6kg Maytag washing machine load (same as our machines) is $4.00 – same price as us. The cost of a large commercial dryer (same as our machines) is $2.00 for 8 minutes – over DOUBLE the rate we charge. Overpriced??? Really??? I do hope this helps. I also look forward to your next review on Trip Advisor, but considering your travels in New Zealand recently and probably we were the only ones to pick you on the fraud issue, I guess we will never ever hear from you again. Till then, safe travels. We are happy to discuss this more should you decide to phone or email us.

We stayed 2 nights in the campground. It's small but is in a handy location, very close to the pubs, restaurants and ski shops. The bathrooms are unisex which is really inappropriate, especially if you are traveling with children. You have no control over the temperature in the shower which is not ideal in winter! The owners insisted on charging a fee for using a credit card which was the only time we encountered this on our tour of the south island. Methven is a great pace to visit at the moment with children because they are running a promotion for children to stay, eat and ski for free. But Abisko will only let kids stay free if you stay in the lodge, not in the campground! Very odd. There are only 2 campgrounds in town... Given Abisko's approach to customer service, it maybe time for someone to open a new one.

Hi WAHCO, Thank you for taking the time to tell us your thoughts with this review. We are disappointed that you felt let down in this example and that we failed to meet your expectations. You are correct, out of the two campgrounds in Methven, we are probably the closest to the main heart of town, the shops, bars, resurants and more. We have an excellent location. Our unisex bathrooms are a little different. We find most families enjoy the freedom of being able to bathe their children together. Each shower has its own partitioned shower room and is very private. We also have a large shower room where families can very comfortably take their children in with them. We have modified the shower temperature and it is now user adjustable – we are sorry for the inconvenience with this but this is now rectified. We have also modified the coin showers to make them easier to manage also. We do pass on the merchant fees that the credit card merchant company impose upon us. This is not uncommon and currently stands at 2% if you use a credit or debit card. EFTPOS and cash do not attract this fee. Unfortunately, credit card fees are excessive and we need to pass this fee on, unlike some places that increase their rates to accommodate this, we allow choice to pay by fee free means if you desire. Charging for credit card use in Canterbury is very common. Methven and Mt Hutt will be running Kids for Free again this year. The campground does not offer this special as our rates are very competitive already (less than the average for the district). Some motels, hotels and lodges offer specials either direct or through their travel agent and we recommend that they source a deal that best suits them. I am sure if you visited our campground this winter, you would appreciate the improvements that we have made. You will enjoy yourself. Thank you again for your comments.

We are a backpacking couple from the UK who arrived in Methven for 5 weeks of farm work, We searched for a campsite and picked this one as it was cheap for tenting (even though they had no long term prices.)

The lady was lovely and made us feel welcome and provided us with plenty of information. The kitchen is adequate and the place generally clean. The showers do cost one dollar for 5 minutes which is the most we have had to pay at a campsite in New Zealand.

However, I would NOT RECOMMEND anyone to stay here as the Male owner is AGGRESSIVE, CONFRONTATIONAL and UNAWARE OF PERSONAL SPACE. As soon as we made him aware we were leaving after one week he became EXTREMELY RUDE and accused us of being dirty and untidy. As we were in a tent and worked on a farm our only option was to undress in the shower room because of this we inevitably left some muddy foot prints which he demanded we clean. We had no problem with this however, the manner in which he CHASTISED us for this was uncalled for and INTIMIDATING.

All in all a basic campsite but other places have much more to offer. Don't be taken in by the cheap price!

Hi Leigh P. Thank you for taking the time to give us feedback with your first ever Trip Advisor review. Firstly, thank you for identifying that we are “cheap”, I assume inexpensive as we certainly don’t want to be “cheap” but we do want to offer excellent value-for-money. Our campground is small or as one reviewer put it, “Tiny Boutique Campground” and another said “Great Personal Park”, I guess referring to the cosy atmosphere that we foster in our campground. We are mindful of our price point and ensure that we offer an excellent service for the fee paid to camp at our campground realising that there are several options within a small radius of Methven with many campers looking at these options and then returning to us to stay for the night, or several nights. We try and make the campground homely and welcoming with many aspects that charm our guests from the free herb garden to the free BBQ, 6000w on-demand heat in the lounge and much more. We are considering a free strawberry garden for our guests soon as well – I hope the birds give it a break. The resident moggy, “Gypsy”, will even give you a hand in your camper if she is welcome or willingly tell you a long story about her life – always up for a pat she is. Thank you for noting that the campground was generally clean. Besides price-point, cleanliness is normally very high on the list of our guest’s expectations. Guests demand that the facilities are clean and suitable for them to use and this may be at all hours and it is never acceptable to have a guest exposed to unacceptable dirtiness – we very closely monitor the cleanliness of the campground and take measures to ensure it stays as clean as possible. During your stay here, your interaction was with Luenne who checked you in and I believe dealt with any issues on a day-to-day basis. I never once approached you to have a conversation. I did have a conversation with your partner, Adam which started with me enquiring about if you guys were staying longer as you indicated you were staying for six weeks. He indicated that you could not “hack the tent any longer” and would be leaving. I did say to Adam that you guys needed to clean up after yourself as the cleaner had complained two days in a row that the campground facilities were incredibly dirty. I personally saw this and yes, the kitchen took 45 mins to clean up after you and there was mud in the shower trays each day (not just muddy footprints as you suggest). The shower drains were clogged with grass and mud which had to be manually removed. We never saw you once launder your cloths in the washing machine and can only expect that you were washing the mud and debris from them in the shower and would explain the extra mess we encountered. There are many more examples, too numerous to mention here. To be fair, the first two days were good where you did clean up well, including not leaving clothing in the shower cubicles or towels draped over the shower doors all day and night even when you were away all day. But as the week wore on, I guess a full day working in the fields made you tired and you thought it was our responsibility to clean the facilities a second time, normally late at night – I make this assumption as you made the statement “we paid you money!”, making me believe that you thought it was not over and above our duties to clean up after you even late at night and even if it is over and above the mess a normal camper would leave. Clearly Adam has told you that I had a discussion as you came asking for a mop and bucket, which I supplied freely. I spoke to Adam as you were still in the bathrooms and it would have been confrontational for me to approach you there. Adam was in the lounge room relaxing. (This was the first time I spoke to you). I asked politely if you could return the bucket and mop to reception when you were done with it and this is when you let loose with a belligerent tirade of verbal abuse. I said “have a good night” and discontinued to engage you even though this was disrespectful in my home and unjustified as I had not been rude to you or to Adam. Both Luenne and I went to talk to both of you shortly thereafter and I asked Adam in front of you “was I rude” and he agreed that I was not rude when I spoke to him. He did suggest that I may have been gruff. Given that we have several other campers on and it is 8pm and again we are cleaning up after you, I think some slack for being less than impressed is warranted. I am sure Adam has seen this behaviour before. As far as you suggestions of me being “aggressive, confrontational and unaware of personal space”. I choose not to engage this further as the average reader will read through your words and make their own decisions and judgement. I can say, we manage three other properties all with independent listings on Trip Advisor and we are often praised for our customer service – one site regularly (and only ever) receives 4 or 5 star reviews for our product we mange and our personal touches. We were also the winner of the 2013 Certificate of Excellence from Trip Advisor. “Aggressive, confrontational and unaware of personal space” never rate a mention in these reviews. We have run the campground for over seven years and never once have we had to ask a camper to clean up after themselves – you are the first. This follows the mountain biking races from two weeks ago where the riders came back covered in mud (as it was raining all weekend) and we STILL never had this much mud in the shower area or muddy footprints. You worked every day in the dry and managed to bring half the farm home with you and still feel it is not your responsibility to clean this up and would rather someone else be inconvenienced by your mess. Shame on you for the mess and shame on you for taking offense at being asked to do the right thing. To sum up: We offer an excellent value-for-money campground close to the centre of Methven with clean and tidy facilities (as you identified). We maintain this by being diligent and not accepting behaviour like yours that resulted in us having to take action. We have a commitment to all of our guests to provide the best service (including cleanliness) and anything that gets in the way of this must be addressed, hence asking Adam if you guys would mind cleaning up after yourselves – clearly you did mind. We also from time-to-time ask people to leave the campground if their behaviour hinders the quiet enjoyment of our other guests – you would not have been allowed to stay past the week you paid for as our other guests were being affected by your mess which results in our reputation being degraded. This should go a long way to clarifying the matter for you and for our future guests who now know how serious we are in providing a clean and value-for-money campground with loads of personal touches.

Hi paulinagtzr, Thank you for taking the time to write a review for us, all feedback is important. Our campground is considered small and boutique with all the basics required for a great stay. We do have very large campervan pitches (larger than average) in a quiet and sheltered setting with heaps of grassed areas for he children to play and only a 2 minute walk to an excellent children’s playground. We have the basic campground facilities like heated lounge room with television and about 15 channels, kitchen which has basic equipment, several lounges and a dinner table and chairs to relax. A complimentary refrigerator and freezer are available for guests to store their food also. A quality coin Laundromat is available with two very large dryers and washing machines with a free cloths line available to also dry your cloths. A cosy and warm internet café is available with WiFi throughout for those who bring their own devices. The supplier has recently slashed his prices to provide this service. A free BBQ in a sheltered area is also available for guests staying at the campground. We are very cautious to price ourselves appropriately. We are on the lower end of the average price scale for our high season: What is important to note is that Methven high season is the reverse of most other areas in the South Island, like, say Kiakoura who will be in their low season. This may give the impression that we charge more, but in fact our seasonality is different. We feel our pricing is well placed. Again, thank your for your comments.

Friendly & helpful reception upon arrival. We booked in for 2 nights, as we planned to ski Mt Hutt the following day. Campground was small but presentable. The small shower & toilet facilities were unisex, which seems to be quite common, though I can't say I'm a big fan. They were built into the side of a big shed, as was the dining room & kitchen. Again, all very basic & not particularly 'welcoming' or comfortable.

The campground is part of the Abisko Lodge & Apartments & is in the centre of Methven, just a short walk to the pubs & shops etc. Good, handy location. It is very small & there were only 2 other motorhomes while we were there, so quiet, also.

We had heavy rain & winds during the night & consequently, Mt Hutt was closed the next day, so we decided to pack up & keep moving on. I requested a refund for the 1 night, before our departure, which was met with a 'not so friendly' response. It was right on 10am, as it wasn't until then that we received confirmation that Mt Hutt was closed. The lady was obviously reluctant to issue a refund & I think may have suspected they perhaps we were from one of the other 2 campers, who had possibly already received a refund & left early. Anyway, her manner was certainly in contrast to that when we arrived. She promptly told us that checkout is 10am, as if to say we'll be charged for the day, if we don't get out immediately. I explained that we were, indeed, about to depart - which we did at approx. 10.15am.

If we return to Methven, we will certainly check out the other limited options before returning here. Whilst the facilities were OK, in comparison to the many other campgrounds/holiday parks around NZ, this place rates as average.

We stayed one night in the campground in our camper van prior to our 3 night stay in the Abisko Apartments. The owners were very accommodating towards our late arrival and request for an early check in to the apartments. Can't thank them enough.
The campsite is fairly basic compared to others that we used on our 12 days travelling around the lower South Island.

We were the only people staying here in November so out of season.

The facilities were all clean, kitchen with plenty of utensils, pots and pans for us, but may have needed more if the site had been full.

We happily turned the heating on in the rest area as it was chilly, and spent two evenings happily reading our books in the warm. Furniture dated but comfortable.

Showers did cost, but that also applied in some other campsites. Like other reviewers, we didn't mind the unisex facilities, but there were just two of us. Laundry worked well.

The location is great, it close to 2 pubs, cafe and shop. There are welcoming and friendly staff provide us many useful information and give us recommendation place to eat which is wonderful. However, I do not feel very comfortable with unisex toilet/bathroom but this is not a major problem for me. The TV lounge and kitchen are clean too. The coin operated shower should at least able to accept small coin other than just $1 coin and maybe consider for free cold shower.

Hello joeygo, Thank you for taking time to review our campground. It is always refreshing to see a review from a seasoned traveller. Yes, the campground is very well situated in Methven and I think anyone would agree that being walking distance to nearly everything in Methven that is important is just fantastic. The famous Blue pub is a small 300m walk so there is no excuse for not having a pint while in Methven. Being a little in love with food, we do have a reasonable working knowledge of the menus in Methven – and yes, we have our fav’s. You can not normally go past the Last Post (only 200 m walk), and if you do, you will end up at the Blue pub and you certainly wont be disappointed there either with excellent sized portions (well, maybe a little too big sometimes). Methven is very in touch with special dietary needs also which is refreshing. Cleanliness is our main concern after our price point ensuring great value for money. We work hard to keep our facilities clean and do ask people to do the right thing if we find them not. This is the rarity though as most sensible people are realising the impact they may have on others are not selfish enough to leave and unreasonable mess for others to be exposed to. Having said this, we take great pride in the fact that you thought our place was spick-and-span. The unisex showers are polarising. Some people (families) love them, some are in different and some are not so fussed. We are looking at options on how to address this as this is what was provided when we took over the management of the campground and any change could be expensive. This is a matter that we are considering. Thank you again for your kind words and suggestions.
