Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We arrived cold and hungry last Friday. What a real gem this hotel turned out to be. The food was very inexpensive and some great 'comfort' food on offer. The hot pork roll and chips was so big I couldnt finish it. The other person ordered prawn dumplings and wedges both fabulous. The highlight was a roaring log fire beside the dining area. We would have stayed longer but time was against us. Its not far from Christchurch.

Here is where the local farmers head for an ale. It’s cosy inside when the fire is cranking. Beer cold and stocked with NZ beers. The front bar is the sports bar. Plenty of TV’s, so you get a good view for everywhere.

Beer here was very cheap but the atmosphere left a little to be desired. A bit more of a "locals" hang out but it was still a great place to visit in Methven. Fro what we saw, the local food was served and it looked v good.

Our first night in Methven and staff were friendly and accommodating. Local beers and local food were all 100%. And...the next night we went to the blue pub, across the toad and owned by the same people! Love it.

I dined here with friends 4 years ago, so brought the family back and wasn't dissapointed. We tried the white bait patties which were great. Main meals were also really nice. Service was friendly and fast, beer cold with good local choices. Will defiantly call back when next in town.

If you are caucasian then this pub will be fine. However to any person of colour attending to visit please skip, there are many other pubs in town. The racial profiling and unprofessional service is not worth the trouble after a long day of skiing.

This is completely incorrect and we feel we need to set the record straight in this case. We remember the incident you are referring to and we can assure you that the staff member involved was very upset for some time after being called racist. Also you may not have realised that our staff includes, 2 Maoris, 2 Indians, 1 Fijian Indian, I native Fijian, 2 Filipinos, 2 Czechs, 1 South African, 1 Australian, 1 Polish, 3 English, I American, 1 Canadian, 1 Swiss, I Polish, 1 Jewish and 1 Dutchman - and they are all part of our Methven Pubs family ... hopefully I haven't forgotten anyone.

Stayed here with my husband just for one night. Rooms have just beds in them and you share a toilet and shower with other guests. That didn’t bother us. What did bother me was how cold it was. We weren’t offered a heater, not sure if heaters were offered but gosh it was cold. We paid $80 for the room which was probably a little over priced in my opinion. We had dinner in the restaurant and the food was lovely. I had the chicken burger and my husband had the steak. Portions were very generous. Food was cooked well and was fresh

We do appreciate it can get very cold in June here and this is why we provide a heater in every room. We are not sure what might have happened in your case, but we do have spare heaters as well as blankets available for anyone who asks and these do a good job of keeping our guests warm even in those chilly mid winter months. We are so sorry that you didn't realise this and are happy that you at least enjoyed your meals in our restaurant. Trust you had a table near one of our toasty fires:)

Dropped in for a drink & a game of pool. Decor was nice, had a old style charm about it. Unfortunately the pool table is worn out as is the cues. I understand that these fixtures aren't alway owned by the establishment, but this one needs to be retired. A million dollar upgrade with worn out table, not a good look.

Glad you enjoyed your visit. Yes indeed we agree with your comments on the pool table and its replacement has made its way up our list of constant improvements. The new table arrives in less than 2 weeks and will be in a new location in the Main Bar. Come back for a game on it and let us know what you think:)

The return bus trip from Mt Hutt dropped us back at the nearby Methven info centre. The Brown Pub across the road was open for dinner and we were given a table (without booking) right next to the fire place. Staff/ waitress was very friendly, welcoming and helpful with menu options and questions. Good quality pub meal in a pleasant atmosphere. Limited wine list, but found a glass of red that was quite ok.
