Detailed Reviews
Tucked away in a back street but still close to town - took us 5 mins to walk in. The studio is perfect for a family of 4 and the main building was warm and inviting. Great facilities and a good kitchen.

Great friendly hostel, very comfortable. Good location. The staff/owner was brilliant, couldn't do enough to help with what ever I needed. Beds were very comfortable. Pot belly fire kept the building very warm, great place to chill out after a day of snowboarding.
Definitely recommend it!

Great place to stay in Methven. Fine to stay with friends, family or solo. Excellent friendly staff. Highly recommend to others, especially for ski season. Plenty to do nearby. Would stay again. Thanks for nice holiday.

Our experience differs much from the reviews on here. No late check in instructions after prior notification that we were arriving late. The bed sheets were really smelly/musty and dusty. Rate of booking online was different that what was charged on site. No explanation was offered for any of these problems and just left us confused by it all.

Nice cozy place, perfect to meet people if you're travelling alone and share the drive to the different resorts in the area, and come back to the firepit everyday. Nice owners really concerned by you well being and comfort.
Only flaw is the old guy working there (or supposed to) that just wants to sit on the couch watching aljazeera and act offended if you ask for clean bedsheets or wifi when you check in, and tells you to "tone it down" when he can't hear the TV (his own words).

A group of 11 of us wanted to stay for two nights to go snowboarding over the weekend. Unfortunately the slopes were closed, so we made our own fun in the hostel. We were well looked after - the owners made us feel right at home, joining us for a beverage in the afternoon before leaving us to it, and supplying an almost infinite number of free-range eggs from their own rescue hens. None of us in any position to drive into methven, Roger pumped up a bike for me to ride into town for more wine. We played darts, chess and poker all weekend at the hostel - slept comfortably and in a clean, homey accommodation. 11/11 would recommend.

This is a no frills original type hostel with a cosy wood fire (with boot rack above) and a well equipped kitchen. It's quiet and respectful and also has a workshop for DIY ski repairs. The showers are hot and its walking distance to the centre of Methven (5 mins). It's also cheap so set your expectations. I'd definitely stay here again.

When i was backpacking in New Zealand i decided to spend two nights in Methven to visit nearby mount Somer. Because of the low-season for Methven (that normally attracts more winter tourists) i was the only one checking into the hostel. Roger and Heather made me very welcome. Their eye for detail in the hostel is amazing. Definitely one of the comfiest beds i slept in :) Roger made me taste new things and even learned me to change a tyre. Their wifi is amazing and I could use their computer for free to back-up my photos for the first time. Had an amazing walk at Mt. Somers. Wish i could stay longer to visit mt. Sunday, enjoy the peace and quite of the town and hostel, see more of those great sunsets and enjoy some more time in a place that felt as 'home away from home'. All the best to Heather and Roger!

Somewhere in the mid-range of pricing for a backpacker I found big tree to be very well equipped with great WIFI, nice warm rooms with good character, and a very pleasing aesthetic. The owners are very friendly and have a good eye for detail. I can recommend Big Tree to all people who want to try something new that still has some old time Methven character.

The Big Tree Lodge is an excellent choice--the rooms are comfortable, the staff is friendly, and the location is good for those skiing the club fields or Mt Hutt. Mostly shared accommodation. Comfortable living room.
