Detailed Reviews
Stayed here in the lodge accommodation/ motel room for 7 nights as a couple. We had originally wanted a one bedroom apartment but they had booked out by the time we could confirm dates. The main draw to this accommodation was the secluded hot tub/ out door spa which can be booked privately. This was wonderful and we used it a fair number of times.
As other reviews state, Steph is wonderfully warm, welcoming and accommodating. Other pluses are the roaring fire in the shared living space and Gypsy the cat.
We didn’t love our stay here though. The beds are very firm. Steph did graciously let me lay on about half a dozen other beds in other rooms. One seemed slightly softer, or just not as hard and we moved to that room after 2 nights in the first room. Some rooms have overhead bar heating but the two rooms we stayed in had noisy blow heaters. The walls were rather thin, so much so that I could hear the next room shower running. The water pressure is amazing and water very hot. I was able to use the adjoining camp kitchen, which is fully enclosed.
So, there are pros and cons.

This place was just perfect for us (3 adults + 2 kids )!! we spent 2 nights at Methven as we were on a road trip for 15days and compared to all the campgrounds we have seen, this one was definitely the best ever!!! Steph and Morne are very friendly and helpful. The campground itself is gorgeous with a nice peaceful garden, dining table, barbecue,spa...all facilities are very clean.Very good location. We almost felt like at home.If you want to go to Mt Hutt the bus stop is just at the front f the lodge. The price is very affordable too.If we weren't on a rush we would stay more. Will come back for sure!! Thank you!!!

We stayed for two nights in our campervan and would say it is the preferred of the two campgrounds in Methven for its location. The camping site is just a kind of back section to the lodge and is not picturesque in anyway but was well kept, with all usual facilities and absolutely fine for the purposes of being central in Methven for skiing. The staff when we first arrived (our only contact with them) were very friendly and helpful, thanks. We arrived quite late in the evening and had already checked out the other place to camp in town which seemed more like a junk yard (perhaps it looked better in the day :) ). Anyway we'd recommend staying at Abisko for convenience, friendliness and centrality.

We have travelled widely through New Zealand and overseas in the last twenty years or so and have never met a more uncooperative and grumpy manager. Not a good look when dealing with the public. Hope his break away improved his attitude. The Lodge was clean and comfortable and ideally placed for local shops/cafes etc.

Hi lesleygam, I am not sure you stayed with us. How do I come at this? 1) A thorough search of our booking system does not find a booking with your name. 2) No one at this establishment has had a break/holiday in the past three months. 3) Your comments “Uncooperative and Grumpy” and not in step with the common thread of our other reviews, as can be clearly seen. As such, I think you have us mistaken for another establishment as your comments to not fit anything or anyone at our place – so sorry. However, if you do wish to stay with us we will be more than happy to assist you. We do suggest you check out our direct website for the best deals on the net – guaranteed.

We stayed here for 1 night recently after finding good recommendations on trip advisor.
Great reception & help on arrival with recommendations for local eateries etc.
The room was large, bedding for 4 people, and it was exceptionally clean and tidy. The queen bed was really comfy & once the heating warmed up the room was really toasty.
The only slight negative was the size of the flatscreen TV, quite small when you're watching from the other side of the room.
We were there when it wasn't ski season so it was relatively quiet, we could imagine you'd get a bit more noise from neighboring rooms at the height of season.
We would definitely return though - great value for money.

Hi there TischlerAndHubby, Thank you for taking the time to write us a review and please accept my apologies for being tardy with my response to you. We are so glad you enjoyed your stay with us in the lodge and we are very happy that you found our rooms warm, bed comfortable and our rooms exceptionally clean and tidy. The TV’s – the Bain of my existence. Would you believe we purchased these new only a couple of years ago on advice of the size to get and we regretted it soon after as we feel they are too small also. We are going to phase these out soon and get larger ones, with better resolution screens also – your room (11 &12), being larger will be the first. Methven is spoilt for choice when it comes to restaurants to eat at. We have our faves don’t you worry about that. We are happy that a Cantabrian like yourself got to enjoy what is hidden away in little ‘ol Methven. We are so glad you enjoyed your stay and we look forward to your return. Alex & Luenne

We booked one of the apartments for our biking group Smokin 'Arrows, and it was cosy and comfy. Would be excellent for a family on a ski holiday too. Hosts Leunne and Alex were really cheerful and helpful. Highly recommend it. Cosy woodfire burner in lounge and 2 toilets in the apartment.

Hi AucklandJax, Thank you for your comments. I hope the Smokin Arrows crew got home safe and sound and without too many saddle blisters… We are happy you enjoyed your apartment. The fireplace is surely a hit. Some years ago, a travel expert recommended that we have it pre-lit for guests to walk into the apartment to the soft glow of a warm fireplace: This adds the WOW factor. We are so happy you enjoyed. Can we expect to see you for the ski season starting in a few weeks? Hope so. Thank you again for your comments. Alex & Luenne

We had a group doing a cycling trip and stayed in one of the apartments. Nice old building and good place to stay. The rooms were well laid out with plenty of space and a generous lunge kitchen downstairs.
Location was a short walk into town. Didn't get a chance to look around the rest of the facilities but I'd be happy to stay there again.

Hi KiwiTraveller199, Thank you for your comments. The cycle tour through town was so exciting to see with heaps of energy for the town, and a little friendly rivalry with the occasional support vehicle “Van-D-Lised”… Luenne and myself were so happy to host you guys and we are so happy you enjoyed the apartment. We agree, they are quite spacious. This last year, we purchased new king-split beds for all bedrooms, so a couple can have the comfort of a king bed now. Thank you again for your comments. Maybe we will see you next year when the cycling trip passes through town. Alex & Luenne

We stayed a week with another family and had an fantastic time. Our kids were made welcome and the hosts Alex and Luenne went out of their way to help us with great travel tips and were at all times friendly and professional. We will be staying there next time we ski Mt Hutt and would recommend Abisko to all our friends.

Hi jonswhaler, Thank you for your lovely comments. I think I can remember exactly which two families with the younglings. Glad your family enjoyed their stay with us. As I recall, it was their first trip to the snow – hope they want to come back. Being new grandparents, and with Luenne’s background working with children, we love children and treat them as our own (as long as we can give them back). Your children, as we recall, were lovely and polite little ones. A testament to their parents. Looking forward to seeing you again soon and thanks again for taking the time review us. Many thanks Alex & Luenne

This is a slightly belated review. I stayed at Abisko Lodge in August of 2011 for 10 days. The accommodations were clean and comfortable. I found the personal touch offered by the, live in, owners a most important asset. A friendly discreet couple very much tuned to the personal likes and preferences of their guests. I had an apartment separate from the main lodge, with a kitchenette, that gave me a feeling of privacy and yet access to all of the Lodge's amenities. As a minor background on myself as a traveler and my discrimination of places to stay, my Wife's idea of camping is a stay in a 4 1/2 to 5 star rated hotel. She would have approved of Abisko Lodge. I booked the Sauna almost every night. The Spa, I did not use, was in a secluded location and very cleanly maintained. The breakfast was well served and i had no need to even think of going elsewhere. The town of Methven is a clean, friendly place with numerous shops and restaurants within short easy walking distance. The local people, quite a few being seasonal residents are most helpful with an understanding that their jobs depend upon tourism. The local Pubs are well maintained, reasonably priced and their meals very good. There is the lack of a local Taxi service, however, when I did want to go to a German restaurant that was a bit outside the CBD. Alex, partner/ owner of Abisko, offered to drive me in his car and I had an enjoyable walk back. This is the type of care they have for their guests. For skiers you can get your Shuttle Bus tickets at the lodge reception desk. The bus picks you up right at the Lodge. All in all I had a wonderful time there.

Perfect lodge super close to all the action in Methven. Ski bus stops right outside, movie theatre and restaurants are 50 metres away. Love the porridge for breakfast - great start for a day of skiing. The room was comfortable, warm and roomy. The bed was very comfortable. It is clean throughout. The hosts are super friendly, easy going and have heaps of information. Will be back next season :)
