Detailed Reviews
Fairly large room with ensuite bathroom which is compact and essentially equipped. Easy walk to the main town area and where we need to be catch the hot air ballooning transport early in the day. Was glad to be able to leave our car at the premise after we checked out and to be served with continental breakfast which was not mentioned in our booking. Thanks for great service. One thing to note is the traffic sound could be heard as our room is the first one next to the main road.

I came through the lodge as a Te Araroa (a 3000km trail across NZ) walker meeting up with my parents for a few days. The first kind thing the owners did was allow me to set up my tent beside my parent's camper van for free which was amazing alone. The second thing they did was way above and beyond. One of my hiking poles had broken on the trail and had become useless. The owners, with no thought of reward, offered to try their best to fix it! The next day I picked it up and they had spent hours trying to repair my gear, and it worked! The pole held up in the backcountry for a few more days which was exactly what I needed. I can't recommend this lodge enough, they will take care of you!

We stayed at Abisko in one of their apartments for a week of skiing. The apartment was spacious which was great because bad weather meant Mt Hutt was closed for the first couple of days there, and flooding on the roads meant we were a bit stuck in Methven and the roomy apartment made it more bearable! Also once we got skiing there was plenty of room to dry out our wet gear. Excellent value for a self-catered family ski trip.

The whole story started when we travelled from Dunedin to Methven towing our caravan to stay in the holiday Park associated with Abisko. Once there we found if we hadn't booked a place at the hot pools there was no way we would get in. Guess what. We still haven't been and likely will never make the effort again.
Then things went slightly pear shaped and that was reflected when we sat down at the end of the four night stay.
First. It is a great wee caravan park. Its intimate and we met and socialised with some wonderful people but that is where it gets its most points. During our time there I do not believe toilets or bathrooms were cleaned nor toilet rolls replenished. The large app 80Litre rubbish bin in the kitchen was full to overflowing the entire duration. A kitchen hob had a do not use sign leaving only one hob for the camp.
Further we were advised the SPA Pool had all its chemicals up to date. We tested the dirty looking water assuming there may have been a water supply issue but when you start coming up in a rash the next day, well that says it all,
This could have been a wonderful stay marred by these issues. Perhaps the manageress was run off her feet for such a busy weekend but I am sure there were people living in Methven that could have been employed to help. The manageress was most obliging but I believe the owners need to look at their business management plan and look after the people using your facilities.
Enjoyed a night in the Dubliner Bar just down the road.!!!!!!!!!

Comfortable, clean accommodation, friendly and helpful staff and a great lounge facility. Easy walking distance to the township and Opuke Spa Pools (a MUST to visit). Methven is a cute and quirky town with fantastic views of the mountains, great eateries and a safe, fun vibe. A trip to the mountains to ski or snowboard is very easy to organise for a reasonable price.

Stayed at the van park, toilets were filthy & no toilet paper. Cooked a meal in the kitchen had to clean up before we cooked. Bin overflowing, kitchen floor desperately needed a sweep. $1.00 a hot shower put in a dollar no shower, went to reception to complain, no manager, rang managers number no answer, very surprised it has so many good reviews bit of a dump really.

We stayed in the campground after looking at the photos on the website. The place promises a spa and sauna, no mention on the website of it costing anything. When we checked in we were told it was $20 for 20 minutes to use both and we had to make a booking. We went to relax in the "comfortable lounge with roaring wood burner," to be told it was for lodge guests only. There is no mention of this on the website. We were directed to a filthy, old, smelly lounge instead, which looked nothing like the photos. When we approached the staff member about this, she was abrupt and argumentative, saying the lodge was full (the lounge was empty.) The kitchen and showers were also filthy.
I would not recommend staying here.

Although Abisko Lodge is dated back to the seventies and looking a bit dated, it was clean and tidy. The atmosphere and reception we got for the managers was excellent and more than made up for the age of the building. The shower was fantastic, lovely hot, hot water and strong pressure of water. I would really recommend Abisko Lodge.

We highly recommend this place. Our group had a wonderful time. This is the first time we stayed in such a cosy motel that has a large lounge for guests to relax in. We absolutely enjoyed ourselves, sitting by the fire place to play board games and watching TV.
There is no kitchen facility in the room though, only beverage-making is available. But the staff were very accommodating. They let us use the microwave in the dining room.
Complimentary breakfast was a great surprise!

The accommodation was adequate but expensive for what was provided. The breakfast only had weetbix and cornflakes and basic bread for toast with limited spread options (no marmalade).
Little things like only one teaspoon in the room and no PowerPoint near a mirror so it makes it difficult to dry your hair.
The wall sockets were vertical type fixed horizontally, that makes my wonder if they were fitted by someone who wasn’t an electrician.

"For 1 or 2 people ask for the apartment out back. Its fairly private with good heat, kitchenette, outside sitting area, comfy double bed, couch, small wardrobe and dining table. The shower/bathroom is slightly narrow but adequate. I consider it a good value."Read full review
