I stayed here as part of an Alps2Ocean Cycle Tour and was very impressed by the staff and room. It had a big, comfortable bed, excellent lighting, great shower and another small sitting/ reading room with 2 chairs. We had dinner and breakfast here, both excellent, unless you want a cooked breakfast. Kate the owner was lovely as were the other staff. Just a couple of small things: there is no shampoo in the bathrooms. You need to ask for it. Also, there is no air-conditioning.

This was my favorite stay in New Zealand! I love older/historic buildings - the building and rooms were arty and functional. The restaurant served great scones in the morning (and other stuff). At dinner the lamb rump was the best I had in NZ.. the vegis served with it were also the most varied that I had in NZ. Desert was a great cheese cake.
The next morning our host led us in pre-cycling exercises and sent us off with fresh scones ;-)

Cute place but not ideal when coming in off A2O if it’s been raining as rooms are very small and boutique and nowhere to put wet clothes for example. Probably a better place to stay if you’re wanting a boutique drive holiday. A little overpriced for what you get (room only) - dinner extra (dinner was nice but unfortunately not as nice as what the reviews were stating), continental breakfast also extra cost so ended up being quite an expensive stay unfortunately. Would I stay again…. No.

We booked 2 rooms at Waitaki Braids Lodge NZ$180 each for March 2020 and were told we were lucky as that was the only place left in Kurow with a vacancy. 2 months later the owner emailed to say she had changed our booking to a lovely house with 3bdr, 2 of which had ensuites but it would cost NZ$420 total. We agreed as we were on a biking trip and thought we would spoil ourselves in the middle of our trip. On arrival that house was being used so she'd booked us another one! Same price. We arrived to an unlocked, barn converted, spacious house, we unpacked and made a cup of tea - no rubbish bin for the tea bag! Not even outside. Then alarm bells rang and we inspected house closer - No TV, No Wifi, No Ensuites. We had booked at Waitaki Braids for dinner and on leaving the house discovered we couldn't lock the door. We enjoyed a lovely meal and discussed our dissatisfaction with accommodation but were met with an icy stare and told that was the price and there wasn't another bed in Kurow which we discovered later to be a LIE! A lady at another cafe told us this was utter rubbish and she personally knew of 2 other places. I have emailed Kate White (owner of Waitaki Braids) twice and had no response despite advising her I was going to be leaving reviews with Trip Advisor..

Sometimes there is no pleasing some people. This English couple were accompanied by another Nelson couple the husband of whom phoned me in October asking me to help him with accommodation for a particular date in March. as he was desperate. I explained that I had nothing available and in fact the date was the busiest date for the year on the Alps to Ocean trail, but he begged and I said I would do my best to help. Eventually the neighbour to our Waitaki Braids holiday home agreed to help and rent her place but she did explain that the house was on the market. As fate would have it the house sold and the takeover date was the date that these clients were to stay - in good faith the new owners agreed to let Linda H and her husband and the other couple stay in their new house. I might add here that the house reached the top price in the district for the year - it is an extremely nice house and came furnished but it was missing a microwave! In order to make the stay more enjoyable we purchased new pillows, topper pads and duvets and a hair dryer for the bathroom. Linda H arrived at 10am and when we saw her wandering on the street I asked if she would like the keys and allowed them to check in early. I went round and delivered fresh milk and then phoned later in the day to make sure all was good and they were happy. Later they called to ask about dinner but they did not want to pay our set menu so we made a one off exception and made the meal $15 per head cheaper. When they came up to pay for the meal and were asked to pay for their rooms they began asking for a reduction in the price which they had known for 6 months, the restaurant was full with people and Linda became very argumentative much to the embarrassment of the other couple. When we arrived the next day the house was a mess and the beds in all three bedrooms had been slept in when only two rooms were paid for! Since this incident I have had two emails from Linda threatening to try and destroy my business - I will leave it up to the reader to decide on this review in context with the other reviews we have.

We have been riding the Alps to Ocean biking track and have found this to be the best accommodation and food on the whole trip. The rooms were beautifully finished and quiet. Kate and her team were great hosts. Thanks.

We were greeted with a plate of scones and tea. Great after a day’s cycling. Dinner was delicious - merino lamb and lots of vegetables. Breakfast was stewed fruit, porridge and toast and we had to pay extra for a coffee. Be sure to do a wine tasting at The Vintners Drop which is 200 metres down the road on the right.

Thank you for your review and glad you found our rooms spotlessly clean and enjoyed the free afternoon tea. I must correct you the lamb was not Merino it was Southland lamb. Dinner was a pickled beet, walnut, blue cheese, mesculun salad served with a quince dressing. The main was Southland lamb with an Israeli aromatic couscous, miso roasted broccoli and asparagus served with salsa verde and red pepper sauce. Dessert was a four layered Lemon and poppy seed cake to celebrate the birthday of another patron. Breakfast was "Posh" porridge served with a selection of locally grown organic fruits including rhubarb, black peaches and local apricots, yogurt, crumble, organic maple syrup, cream, brown sugar, butterscotch sauce and a selection of different toasts and at least 8 spreads, including homemade raspberry jam, homemade marmalade and local honey. x. We have free tea and coffee available to patrons 24 hours a day, it is normal practice that barista coffee is paid for at any hotel or restaurant. I gather from the cycle company you booked with that you were on a "luxury" tour and they have agreed that in future barista they will pay for barista coffee for clients on these tours along with a cooked breakfast on top of what we already supply. In light of this I have given your friends Marian and Christopher who stayed with us last night $30 to cover your coffees and the egg on toast. When your next in Kurow be sure to visit some of the other wineries including River T where they sell ALL the wines produced in this region. We at Waitaki Braids do not have the space hold every wine from this area and so we choose to sell the wines of the producers who make us part of their wine family this includes, Valli, Bobbing Creek, Forrest, Tatty Bogler, Dragon Bones and River T - a great bunch of producers.

I cannot say enough good things about this place and the people.
It was a wet day when we arrived and they allowed us to check in early so our little one could have a nap. We were treated to fresh scones for afternoon tea and the ability to make our own tea/coffee. The rooms were lovely. I'm very particular about beds and these were very supportive. The best night's sleep we had on our trip. The stone walls are beautiful and the rooms were lovely.
If staying longer and wanting a sleep in maybe bring an eye mask as there are no thick curtains to block out the light.
Dinner was a fabulous lamb pasta (I'm not usually a big fan of lamb but this was yum and perfect for the wet evening). Kate made every effort to make us and our children welcome and catered for. Breakfast included stewed rhubarb which reminded me of my granny in Ireland.
We loved it so much we came back for lunch on our way home.
Thank you for everything and best wishes

We stayed a night Waitaki Braids Lodge while completing the Alps2Ocean Cycle tour and I am so glad we did. This was a wonderful place to stay - warm, clean, comfortable and welcoming; well equipped, with comfortable beds, beautiful finishes, interesting artworks and good strong hot showers. Owner and host Kate White was a fascinating and highly articulate, engaging, funny and entertaining woman. The 3-course dinner was great and the "posh porridge" for breakfast (with stewed rhubarb, blood plums and apricots) lived up to its reputation! Highly recommended.
