Silverstream Alpaca Farm-stay is located just 15 minutes north of the city centre and 15 minutes north of Christchurch International Airport. Beautiful lawns and gardens set on a stream boundary plus 150 gorgeous alpacas, all waiting to be fed, make this facility ideal for families and visitors looking for something different than a traditional hotel.

What separates Silverstream from other accommodation facilities is the free one hour farm tour (normally NZ$40 per person). Get up close and friendly with the alpaca. Photographs and petting of

the alpacas is encouraged - and we even have our own alpaca shop.

The tariff includes exclusive use of your own self-contained cottage, an extensive breakfast, a one hour escorted farm tour, free wifi, free Netflix, free laundry and free parking. Kaiapoi township is located just five minutes from Silverstream. Cafes, restaurants, bars and supermarkets are all readily available. Please take a look at our reviews - they tell the real story.

After our 2 week road trip around South Island, we decided to do the farm stay before flying back home from Christchurch. This place is very calm, quiet and peaceful. It’s just 15 min drive from Christchurch. The cottages are simple and clean. Kids enjoyed their time with alpacas. It was a wonderful stay. The couple hosting us are also very kind and helpful.

We had a lot of fun with the alpacas and we had an amazing experience staying here. Owners are very friendly and we had a very informative tour with the alpacas. The accomodation is very spacious and comfortable with great wifi, strong shower and comfortable beddings. Breakfast provided to us was more than adequate with breads, cereal, juice, milk, eggs and fruits. If you are looking to experience a farmstay in Christchurch, this is definitely a great option.

We spent a night at this farmstay, and I can safely say this was the highlight of our trip. Kit and Sheryl are wonderful hosts, warm and hospitable and making sure our stay is enjoyable. Although Kit and Sheryl were busy preparing for the NZ Agricultural Show, Kit still made the time to take us on his truck to his other alpaca farm where we could feed and interact with his alpacas, and he was also very informative about his alpacas and answered so many of our questions patiently. He has a genuine love for his alpacas and it’s such a joy to see. And yes, the alpacas are utterly adorable, not to mention highly intelligent, and it’s interesting to learn about them. The accommodation is also charming and really comfortable. We had a large, spacious cottage to ourselves, it was clean and well-maintained, and the bed and furnishings were extremely comfortable. There are also beautiful flowers in front of our cottage and in the estate garden. Sheryl brought over breakfast items including bread, eggs, cereal, yoghurt, milk and spreads for us in the evening for our breakfast as well, which I think is such a lovely touch. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and we would recommend this farmstay and tour to anyone who loves animals.

We arrived from Wellington late at about 11pm. The owner's kit was super friendly and waiting for us at his door step and helping us with our luggage. As he was staying the house beside our accommodation. Kit was super lovely and warm. He has help us to warm up the room before we arrived. Hence when we reach there the whole house was super warm. The sky outside the house was super clear and you are able to do some star gazing. Kit give us a whole house orientation and what to do and where is what thing. As breakfast was provided, he has also place the breakfast in the fridge so that he don't need to disturb us too early in the morning. Breakfast consists of bread, cereals, apples, orange, eggs, juices, milk and yogurts. Tea and coffee was also available. There is a extra foldable bed in the living room for the 5 person. Kit was so thoughtful and brought a extra heater to place it by the side apart from the aircon heater on the wall. As the weather was super cold over the night that the grass outside the house was frozen. The next day Kit came to find us at 10am to do a farm tour and let us touch, feed and take photo of his lovely alpacas in the farm. They are super pretty and lovely. He even show us how he create the alpacas fur to lovely scaf and sweaters. The price was reasonable and he did not do any hard selling. As he mention that he is just here to pass time rather than for business. He told us the history behind how he purchase the farm and how he get into this business. It was lovely to heard from him. He also introduced to us the stream behind his house and was also so nice of him to let us stay beyond the checkout time to go back to Christchurch airport to get our rental cars. It was really lovely to meet kit and to stay in his farm house. Will highly recommend anyone to drop by and stay with him if you are nearby Christchurch and to see him and his lovely alpacas. Will miss him and the alpacas. 😊

We travelled from north to south, stayed in five star hotels , bungee jumped and black water rafted - but our Silverstream Alpaca stay remains our favorite memory in New Zealand. Here we arrived circa 4:30pm, in time to meet the owner Kit, to walk the paddocks and meet the Alpacas and even to help feed two newborns. Alpacas don’t smell, and are endearing, smiley, love able creatures. Unlike mass market farm stays , this is a boutique experience in an idyllic spot, with very limited overnight accommodation in charming B&B family cottages. So you won’t be sharing the experience we more than one other family. Clean, soft and comfortable , we loved shopping in the nearby supermarket to eat in - to allow for one more evening stroll on the premises. This was fantastic for our teenage children and for us and we congratulate Silverstream Alpaca on having created the ideal alternative experience to a hotel stay in Christchurch and a MUST do NZ experience! Simply amazing !

After a tour of Zealand, we decided to conclude our holiday here, it was the most relaxing end to our holiday. The cottage simple and beautiful. The highlight of the stay is of course the Alpacas. The breakfast was sufficient and a great start to a relaxed day ahead. we loved just lazing around on the grass with the soothing sounds of the stream. our 10 year old daughter enjoyed the entire experience and cant wait to re-visit again. If we visit NZ again, we would love to end the trip here again.

Booked a farm tour. Not a tour as such, climb into a paddock of alpacas and feed them. Host was knowledgeable but the cost of $40 for the half hour was very expensive. Not value for money. Cute alpacas tho.

Response from Sheryl J, Owner at Silverstream Alpaca Farmstay
Responded 13 Dec 2019
Hi Ingrid We are sorry that you feel that the tour was not value for money. Alpacas are a rare and costly animal and difficult to make a financial return on. The tour advertised feeding the animals and getting up close for photographs. Most of our tours involve two people. For a busy farm operation, receiving $80 for two visitors for the hour is not excessive. Despite advertised departure times, many of our visitors choose to turn up any time or turn up late which often means that we have lost half a day from our regular farm chores. I am pleased however that you felt the alpacas were cute - they really are. We do hope you enjoyed the rest of your NZ holiday.

I was excited for this farmstay at the end of our trip around the South Island, but as it turned out it wasn't much of a farmstay and I would have rather stayed at a more professionally run accommodation instead. Firstly, with regards to the cottage itself, the kitchen and bathroom were dirty. Kitchen drawers and fridge have not been cleaned in ages. Fridge was stinky and actually wasn't working. I wasn't informed and had to confirm this with the host after already storing my food items in it. Bathroom is in dire need of a remodel. Sink was falling off, there were specks of dirt everywhere and the shower curtains were stained. The bedroom felt cleaner but there were no bedside tables and the bed was very shaky. The owners were away and we were looked after by some young people. They were very pleasant, helpful and responsive, but not sure that running the B&B was part of their job scope (eg. they didn't know how long we were staying). Outside the cottage, the garden was very pretty but all other areas were neglected, eg. the patio was untidy and strewn with random objects. This may have all been justified if we had a real farmstay experience, but this was not the case. I had picked this place after seeing the pictures of alpacas right outside the cottages. In actual fact they were kept far away and while we were at liberty to walk over to where they were, this limited our chances to interact with them. The descriptions also talk about bottle feeding them etc. but we were only given some leaves which most of them were not interested in. No different from staying elsewhere and just doing a farm visit (this one or any other one) instead. The only aspect of the stay that felt like a farm were the chickens walking around. I don't think the eggs were direct from the chickens though as they had codes printed on them.

Nice friendly hosts. It's quiet and pleasant. Not fancy and modern. So it's basic but clean. Had some issues with broken appliances but the hosts were always eager to help. Unfortunately we were only there one night so I don't think they had time to arrange the repairs. Alpacas were great, nice and friendly too!
