We have a driving limit of three hours in a day, so when we took out the map and pointed our fingers to the mid-point between Mt Cook and Christchurch, it seemed logical to stop in Geraldine. What a transition! The most obvious difference from the protected alpine national park filled with snow covered mountains and glacial valleys & lakes is the actual town that makes me feel I’ve stepped back into the 1950’s and the gardens in everyone’s front yard with their roses. Alycon and Myron our hosts at Downs B&B have a lavish garden with roses of so many varieties – however, it’s the hanging begonias near their front door that are the stunners! My eyes are soaking in the softness and lushness of the trees, shrubs and flowers in comparison to the high alpine brush. And whereas Queenstown, Lake Hawea and Mt Cook Village are primarily tourist destinations, the town of Geraldine is where kiwis live. Alycon & Myron informed us that there is a growing retirement community and a “group’ for every interest.
Staying at Downs B&B, we had a clean and quiet very comfortable room with ensuite bathroom in a garden like setting. It was so quiet and peaceful – we got a great night’s sleep. There was a lounge area for guests and a stocked refrigerator with soft drinks and beer. Breakfast was hot and cooked-to-order and delicious.
What a surprise the town of Geraldine has turned out to be. From what we understand many artists live in the area. And there are lots of walking tracks too. Geraldine. Off the tourist path and it definitely would have been a fun stop for several days!

Wanting to break up our drive from Dunedin to Akaroa, we decided to spend a night in the charming town of Geraldine. Not just any night: Christmas Eve. When we arrived at The Downs, a magical homestead set in the rolling green hills, we were warmly welcomed by Myron and Alycen.

The Downs is immaculate and extremely comfortable, with views onto the well-established and large garden from bedrooms and guest lounge room. It is as if you are in your own secluded and leafy spot in a public botanic gardens.

The lounge room is well stocked with complimentary nibbles and drinks, so you can settle down to read a book with a coffee and biscuit - or something stiffer - at any time. The only decision to make is whether you do this on the sunny verandah, on the picture window seat in your room, or on the comfortable sofa.

Christmas morning, our generous breakfast was accompanied by a Christmas gift for each of us. What fabulous hosts! We'd go back to Geraldine just to stay here!

We arrived in Geraldine after spending an extortionate amount of money at a lodge over Christmas which was sadly lacking in all areas of good service and value.

So when we got here and found the rooms spacious and clean with a guest lounge adjacent to our room ( all to ourselves as only ones there at the time), with friendly and gracious hosts, free drinks both soft and alcoholic, we were ecstatic.

We relaxed straight away, it was hard not to as we sat on the deck, in the sun, overlooking gorgeous gardens. We had a beer to hand, magazines and books, all available for free in the guests lounge. Perfect.

Later we had to do some laundry and there was free facilities to do this as well.

Geraldine is a lovely town and there was a craft fair on at the time and we purchased some nice momentos to take home. But it is known as the craft capital of NZ! It was Boxing Day when we were there and so many of the restaurants were closed or had reduced menus. So we were amused to find the only evening meal we could get was a
' Subway' sandwich and tub of ice cream. But this was fine- we were so relaxed and at ease that we laughed it off and took it back to our room to enjoy some evening drinks and chill out. We had our ice cream with the trifle that Myron and Alycen so kindly shared with us.

We loved it at the Downs and it was perfectly situated on our route across country towards Christchurch. We would heartily recommend staying here.

The Downs is located just a short drive from the centre of Geraldine & is an excellent place to stay for a first night out of Christchurch or the last night before a flight.
The house is spacious with a large garden and the hosts are very welcoming and happy to talk without being pushy.
The rooms are spacious, clean, comfortable and the beds very good. There is a large guest's lounge, which has coffee/tea, home made biscuits & a small bar, all included in the tariff. Breakfast is delicious, being home-cooked and using some home frown products.
Highly recommended for a relaxing and enjoyable sojourn

We happened across this B&B by accident after hitting a problem with our previous accommodation. Upon knocking on Myron and Alycen's door you couldn't hope to find a friendlier and more helpful couple.

The property is fantastic, the rooms are spacious and airy with wonderfully comfortable beds and the breakfast is cooked to order. If only all B&Bs were of this quality.

It is nice to meet a couple who are genuine and passionate about their guests.

Well worth a visit.
