Our room (Room 5) at the Vicarage was the epitome of luxury. No expense had been spared to provide guests with the very best of everything. The king bed, the bedding, the kitchenware and the bathroom facilities were all of the highest quality.
The room was stylishly decorated and furnished and felt very homely and comfortable. I just couldn’t recommend the Vicarage more highly for those guests with discerning taste who are prepared to pay a bit more to experience the very best.

The Vicarage is a gem! Painstakingly restored, it offers the most comfortable and stylish accommodation with everything you could possibly expect in a self contained holiday apartment. Even a decanter of port was provided on our arrival! Everything was spotlessly clean, bed was exceedingly comfortable and the staff were very helpful and friendly through the booking process and during our stay. Adjacent Barkers cafe offers excellent, reasonably priced breakfasts and all day service-a bonus if you don’t want to use the well equipped kitchen in the room. All faultless…not to be missed if you are in the area!

This is a renovation of the old vicarage and has been done so tastefully. Centrally located in the town next to cafes, pubs and restaurants, and the Barkers experience. We were downstairs - room 1. We really appreciated the finer touches that has gone into this, right down to the coat hooks. Also, the thought that went into making the guests feel special, like a luscious comfy bed, real coffee, chilled wine, a beautiful outlook and a courtyard where you could sit and watch the market on a Saturday. There is also a sitting room where you are invited to have a port should you wish. All mod cons and no faffing around with check in/out procedures. 10/10 and will stay here again for sure.

Sometimes we feel that there is rating inflation with online reviews. Not in this case: The Vicarage earns a 5+ and sets the standard for boutique hotels. Everything was perfect. The room was tastefully appointed with sensitivity to the historical period without being overdone, the bathroom was nicely updated and the bed was incredibly comfortable. Overall, the hotel was beautifully restored and immaculate. And we appreciated the small but lovely touches including the detailed pre-arrival information regarding things to do in Geraldine (incredible helpful) as well as the lovely guest sitting rooms complete with complimentary port. We reserved a room with the breakfast package and cannot say enough about our experience at Barkers (the restaurant right behind the hotel where breakfast is served). Barkers serves a delicious hot breakfast and has such lovely staff. It was the icing on the cake of an incredible stay. The Vicarage is truly a treasure. Between the accommodations and location (in the heart of things) it is perfect place to stay for any one visiting Geraldine. In fact, it alone is a reason to visit Geraldine! If we lived in New Zealand it would be our “go to” for a weekend getaway.

We booked last minute as our plans had changed that day. So glad we did. After a very long drive, we were delighted to let ourselves into a beautiful bedroom and bathroom, lovely and cool from the air conditioning. Really comfy bed and nice touches like a free bottle of wine and a voucher for a free jar of preserve or chutney from the fabulous bakery/eatery at the back of the property (well worth a visit. We had a really nice breakfast there). You are given a code to a lockbox outside the front door that corresponds to your room number, so you don’t meet your hosts, but their presence was felt in all the thoughtful touches around the property. There are 2 lounges that guests can use in addition to their own bedrooms. Plenty of parking in the car park in front of the building.

We had a really lovely overnight stay. Would highly recommend.

This is our sixth visit of two or more days, the last two for our annual anniversary. The setting, quality of accommodation, 'extras' and ambience is unsurpassed in our opinion, to the extent we no longer consider going anywhere else in NZ. Having a cafe on the doorstep and all other services within a couple of hundred meters, makes The Vicarage the perfect destination for a totally de-stressing, pampered stay. Housekeeping staff are so courteous and helpful, couldn't wish for better. Debbie, one of the Barkers cafe duty managers, is an absolute gem! Her attention to customers (before they have even thought of it) and attention to detail is second to none - what a great find she is! :-)) Whether driving from Nelson or ChCh, the distance is immaterial to us as we anticipate the consistently exceptional venue that is The Vicarage. Looking forward to our 7th.

This property is immaculately presented and was a real pleasure to stay at. The rooms are beautifully appointed and the hosts have thought of everything. The bed was luxuriously comfortable, the rooms are spacious, light and tastefully decorated. The living rooms on each floor are equipped with refreshment facilities, books, tv, games and sofas, table & chairs. Each ensuite room has coffee & tea facilities along with a fridge, tv and desk.
This building has been restored with great thought and attention to detail.

The vicarage was an excellent 5 star luxury venue for our group of friends' reunion weekend. The rooms and sitting rooms are delightful, beautiful and well provisioned, with top quality linen and thoughtful touches including the complimentary port and wine, the complimentary voucher for a Barkers preserve product and the books detailing the renovation and the Barkers company history. The renovation of the entire hotel is top quality and retains many of the original features such as the beautifully restored leadlight windows. The staff are really professional, friendly and helpful and we had the pleasure of meeting Bridget Barker, one of the owners. Located in the centre of the town across the road from the farmers market and numerous arts and crafts shops and excellent cafes and restaurants meant we could leave our cars in the carp park and wander around on foot. Some highlights to be mentioned are the two breakfast/lunch venues Barkers cafe/shop and Verde literally next door to the Vicarage, Royal India, the Valley Brewing Company where you can taste and sample the amazing range of craft beers they produce while you are having dinner, the quaint Geraldine Vintage Car and Machinery Museum and the numerous walks - the Riverside Walk starting just outside The Vicarage and the Talbot Forest Reserve. For fun soccer golf is to be had at the Geraldine Farm shop/cafe five minutes outside of town. For the serious golf player we found out there is an excellent 9 and 18 hole golf course on offer.
All of the above makes Geraldine such a wonderful place to visit and we wish we could have stayed longer to sample more on offer.

There is nothing not to like about The Vicarage. Beautiful building lovingly and carefully restored, but with a modern feel. It is not old fashioned but bright and fun.

We stayed twice in the space of a month and had room 5 for both stays. Very comfortable King Size bed with a Fairydown quilt - perfect - much lighter than a duvet so we both slept very well.

The room has a small fridge, tea and coffee make facilities and fresh milk. Bathroom has heated towel rails and floor with a large walk in shower.

It is "bed only" but there is a great cafe/bakehouse next door that does a good breakfast and good coffee.

For dinner, we went to the Village Inn, about 2 minutes walk away, and had very good pub food with a good bottle of wine.

A terrific stay and highly recommended.

We were somewhat apprehensive about the Vicarage following an unsatisfactory stay in a similar renovated building in Clyde. However The Vicarage exceeded all expectations and we don't hesitate to recommend it! The online booking is very smooth and easy to negotiate. The building has been beautifully restored with large, comfortable modern rooms providing all of the amenities one would expect. Very comfortable beds and a bright up to date bathroom with great plumbing. Lots of little extras like the lounges on both floors. The rooms are quiet with no significant road noise at night. Good safe parking.
We really enjoyed breakfast the following day at Barkers- an ideal opportunity to browse the stunning products made by the company and pick up a few items.
Geraldine provided a good stopping point on our drive between Blenheim and Queenstown. The Vicarage is a very well run quality facility and we would not hesitate to return. Well done Barker Family!

Thank you very much for your feedback. We're so glad you enjoyed your stay at The Vicarage! As it was originally built, the old Vicarage was draughty and cold, so we took care to fully renovate it inside and out to bring it up to modern standards while preserving the heritage details and charm. We're glad you enjoyed sampling what was on offer at the Barker's Foodstore & Eatery and would love to welcome you back to Geraldine again in the future!
