The heartbeat of our homestay comes from our Christian world-view which aims to give guests a friendly, warm welcome in our beautiful environment. This is your chance to unwind and recharge. We can be a convenient stop-over between the Mackenzie country and Christchurch, or simply a quiet weekend away from the bustle of city life. Peel Forest Homestay provides accommodation in our large, child friendly farmhouse, and is a tranquil place surrounded in forest and full of warmth. We are situated very close to the native forest with its rich bird life, and there is easy access to many of the Peel Forest park walks from our house. We have recently been developing a native wetland in one of our paddocks, and are busy planting it in native trees and flaxes. Through our farm, we aim to be self-sufficient, and have a large vegetable garden and fruit and nut trees, as well as a few cows, sheep, horses, chooks and ducks. Most of the food we eat is produced by us in the garden and on the farm.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is a fabulous place for anyone wanting to explore the beautiful Peel Forest area.  The accommodation is basic, as reflected in the price, but offers great value.  The three ladies in our group slept (and slept well) in the bunk room, which was our main base during the day.  Sitting out on the west-facing veranda in the late afternoon was bliss.  They each said the shower in the externally accessed bathroom was excellent.  I stayed upstairs on my own in the main house.  The shower wasn't as good there (big deal), but I appreciated being able to nip across the hall/landing straight from my room.  Jenny generously gave me the larger of the two upstairs rooms, but I would have been as happy, I'm sure, in the smaller single room.  As it was, it was very comfortable, and on my second night I slept more soundly than I can remember. The website gives an accurate description of the accommodation.  I agree with the other positive TripAdvisor reviews.  If you're after up-market accommodation, this isn't the place for you.  Your loss, however.  I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again and recommend it highly for the value and experience.

Steve and Jenny took us in when we were stranded in the area because of the floods. Their home is beautiful, full of character and surrounded by all the nature and greenery you could desire. We got to choose whether we wanted to stay in the backpackers room, which has plenty of games, books, a kitchen with everything you could need or in their home itself, which also left you wanting for nothing. Jenny and Steve were very knowledgeable and gave us a lot of advice about what to do in the area, shared their homemade foods with us and we had lovely chats. They are lovely, kind people. Highly recommend staying with them!

Peel Forest hosts Steve & Jenny Deans are quintessential kiwi. There delightful home is a wonderful complement to their warm hospitality and refreshing friendliness. We shared lots of stories across the breakfast/dinner table. We had to stay on. There was so much to learn from their knowledge and long-standing connection with the land and landscape. Their delicious perked coffee off the kitchen coal range is an easy invitation for easy conversation. To anyone considering accommodation with a difference, you will not be disappointed with the country accommodation, warm hospitality and enduring memories. I have included my photo of one of Austen Dean’s landscape works to show the connection with the land. Other photos on the farmstay website are a true representation of the accommodation. Very highly recommeded. Many thanks Steve & Jenny, and kind regards, Steve and Sarah Crawford, Auckland, NZ.

Peel Forest Farmstay is a wonderful place to get away from the crowds. I have been able to enjoy a wonderful 2 days of hospitality, leafy surroundings and real life on a farm. It is one of the few stone houses in New Zealand.Host Steve can take a 4x4 to Mesopotamia Station and on to Te Kaupeka Conservation Park. There you have a panorama as far as the Southern Alps (Mt Cook N.P.). It is so remote that you will not be able to see another human being in the wider area. If I went back to New Zealand again, I would like to stay here much longer. Highly recommended if you like peace, charm, hospitality and basic.

Read the information carefully so that you know what to expect. I stayed in a private room and could not have felt more welcome. It is a farm homestay and not a hotel and all the better for it. Jenny and Steve were wonderful. I wiill not mention every detail i received in case future guests consider it as standard. This is a rural adventure park for kids.

We spent three relaxing days experiencing the true rural area around Peel Forest, nestled at the foot of Mt Peel. We woke up at sunrise overlooking the native forest, listening to the bird songs. One of us slept outdoors on the balcony feeling very content being so close to nature. The hosts were very caring, humble and warm-hearted, opening up their lovely house to us. They let us have a small sightseeing tour on their property. It was fun to shell hazelnuts and walnuts from their land enjoying those delicous fresh organic products. We really appreciated the stay and felt fully recharged when we left

We stayed in the backpackers not the B&B. The backpackers is like a cross between a YHA in town and a DOC hut in the backcountry - all the best of both worlds. The farm(let) backs into the native bush of Peel Forest, with many of the original natives entwining into the farm itself, complete with dawn to dusk bird native bird chorus. By farm, this is not the industrialised farming of the plains, this, is the old world traditional hill farm of Footrot Flats, of Wal, Couch and the dog, complete with random farm stuff dotted around the place, small fields with a house cow, sheep chickens and horses. The accommodation block has the look of being the old woolshed, with one end lovingly converted by hand, using lots of reclaimed and home-sawn native woods, by the owners into a classic bunk-room, complete with a dozen original paintings - some by family members. It is utterly authentic, original, and heartfelt, a million miles from the faux rustic you get in town. The DOC hut side comes in as the sink in the bunk room only has cold water and the loos and showers are five meters away in another building. So, if you love being in DOC huts in the backcountry, but, are getting a bit older have some young kids etc. so a big hike and getting the stove out and rehydrating the food is wearing a bit thin you are going to love this place. If you want your mod cons, and think the world is going to end if you have to navigate some cow pats on the way to the dunny, then stay away so the rest of us can enjoy the place to ourselves. Either pay online in full or take cash - no eftpos, no WiFi, no internet, no phone, not even cell phone coverage, no work. Just wonderful.

We drove down from Chch after work and fell in love with the place! We stayed in bunkroom and slept for 10 hours solid! It was warm cosy but fresh and beautiful. Breakfast was included and was amazing! Everything Home made Yogurt, Marmalade Preserved plums , muesli, bread, ...wait for it- Eggs from the farm, milk from house cow and hazelnuts from tree on the property! I loved this place and being only 1.35hrs from Chch we would love to come back!

We stayed in the backpackers room for three nights and had such a great time. Very nice hosts and the area is so quiet and beautiful. I loved all the different birds you can hear from the veranda. The bed was so comfortable I could have slept all day. Loved the shower! (As I don't know how to say it in English: die Dusche und alles andere hatte echt Charme :) ) Would have loved to stay a bit longer just to relax. Thank you!

Clean large bedroom and pleasant owners. The rest of the house and yard was cluttered and untidy. Cramped bathroom and toilet. Nice walk in the forest a short way down the road. Over priced for the facilities. Coffee but no food offered.
