Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

We only visited the restaurant. All other were closed or fully booked.
Don't get scrared when you enter the room. Ensure you order your drinks at the bar and the food on the second counter - don't wait at your table for service - nobody will come (only foreigners do not know). The service is truelly friendly and fast.
The food is great and quite cheap.
You will not go hear to celebrate birthday or a wedding - but if you are hungry and look for good food.

Town was busy with the Irishman Rally, decided we would try the Gladstone for dinner. Despite seeing a burger being delivered, was advised the kitchen would only do the special menu of 5 options due to the rally, which was somewhat disappointing as these were larger meals it appeared than what we needed. While my seafood basket was quite good, my partner was disappointed with the bangers & mash - plain old precooked sausages don't really do it when paying for a main meal. So somewhat disappointed, they were steady, not all the tables filled but guess it is not normally that busy for them. I had been looking forward to a burger all afternoon, can't see it was difficult to leave the range of them available rather than just a limited menu.

We had a lovely overnight stay. Warm greeting from the owner who gave us a quick tour on check in even after we arrived a bit later in the evening. Kitchen was closing, but we got a got a solid recommendation for dinner a short walk away. Everything in the rooms was spotless. Comfy bed, clean sheets, and clean bathrooms. A lot of these reviews are pretty harsh. We thought it was a neat stay in one of NZs older buildings with lots of interesting original features. It's not perfect nor is it brand new. The Owners and staff are clearly working hard to make it a nice place. Very few places like this left! We feel like we had good value for money. We've stayed in more expensive hostels on this trip that did not have the same character as this Hotel.

The hotel is dilapidated and old and the room was bare, with flaky paint, worn out carpets, and smelt damp and musty. The place is a death trap if there was a fire, due to the complex layout. The owner was very unwelcoming and would not let us use the bar, the meal area, which was the only wifi area, and would not serve us breakfast ( which was included in the room rate ) because of his paranoia about us having the possibility of Covid-19, but he was happy to take our money, but would not refund it when we told him we were not staying due to the above mentioned problems. He also overcharged us for the room. AGAIN, DO NOT STAY HERE, find somewhere else.

This hotel is at least 50 to 60 years past its use by date and is in desperate need of renovation . From the moment we walked in we knew we made a massive mistake by booking the place . The hotel has this peculiar odour which reminded me of Urinal deodorising blocks . There is paint missing everywhere . The rooms have no tea or coffee making facilities , No TV , No en-suit , No wardrobe. The bed was comfortable and clean . There is an old hand basin in the room . There shared bathroom facilities are very old and shabby but clean with broken floor tiles and Lino that curled up on the edges and a shower that barely works . There is an old bath . The dinning room looks uninviting and unhygienic. The breakfast which is a poor excuse for a kiwi and continental breakfast consists of the 3 cheapest cereals one can buy , the cheapest bread for toast , condiments such as jam and margarine, coffee and tea . There are flat tv’s in the bar . The only other tv is in the dining room .This TV is a clapped out old Cathode Ray TV . We paid $180 for 2 nights in this house of horrors . For an extra $15 per night we stayed in Timaru in a hotel with all the in room facilities expected of a hotel room nowadays. The web site for this hotel is very economical with the facts about the facilities . Most of the rooms were unoccupied when we were there contrary to the booking website which stated only 3 rooms left when we booked . I hope this review will help people make an informed choice on where they book .

.We had booked this online through a popular site. We arrived at 3.15 to find the place locked up.There was only street parking. When the Reception eventually opened there was an awful smell of stale beer and mould. We are elderly and have breathing problems. The room offered to us was on the third floor of this complicated layout building and only communal bathrooms down the corridor. No even a washbasin in the room. Goodness knows if there had been an emergency how we would have found our way out. We walked out and booked elsewhere. We had pre paid before seeing the room but were prepared to write that off. $93 We paid a little more than that for a clean motel room with en suite.

Reading the reviews I was a little worried, but it was just an overnight stay so it couldn't be that bad. Lad at reception/bar was very kind and professional. Room was very old and somewhat unkept, but the panel heater and electric blanket kept it warm. Pub downstairs served a very hearty meal. Overall very pleased with the stay for the price!

Very very out dated and in poor shape.
Room wall had huge windows to hallway along the top with no courtains so an outside light lit up tge room. No sleep there.
Bathrooms dont lock and no lights in the stalls.
Only 1 power socket in the room.

Spare yourself this experience

We dinned at the gladstone the other nigh (Saturday) we were out stunned by the service, fast work and amazing manners that the young boy working provided. This is the best service we have ever received and i am of a good age. As soon as we arrived he welcomed us in a nice manner, sat us down and gave us a menu, went away again and came back with a bottle of water, told us the specials, soup of the day and the vegetables on offer for that evening- his knowledge of everything with amazing, he knew exact amounts and sizes of each meal and what they came with. After we gave him our order he kindly took the menu and told us our order wouldn't be long, and it wasn't long at all. He brought out our food which was presented nicely, put them down on the table and then told us to enjoy. About 5 minutes later, he was back to ask how our meals were going - and we told him that they were delicious. He checked and looked after the other in house dinners, he did this extremely professional - one couple had a complaint he dealt with it extremely well, offered them a discount and quickly offered his deepest sorrows more than once his manners were out standing. Overall I recommend this place especially when the young boy works, deserves a pay rise! We would have offered a tip but had no cash on us. Well done, very pleased and happy with this experience we will be back.

Definitely recommend to anyone!! Please try, a fantastic review you'll leave I guarantee food and service is excellent!
