We read the reviews here on TA but thought they might be too positive to be true. No, they are not at all. We stayed for two nights and enjoyed every moment. Fantastic location, perfect accommodation, admirable hosts.

A view to die for:
Yes, it is remote and downtown Cheviot is a quiet spot, too (but offers all you need when traveling). BUT the views from our room over the hills onto the mounting range is everything: from soothing to breathtaking.

An accomodation to die for:
This exceeds the mere room which is, in itself, much more than you would get in other places. The house is purpose built and offers alternatives to either enjoy privacy in your room or, in a more semi-private fashion, on your own terrace or to socialize with other guests in the lounge or library. Very unobtrusive, very welcoming, very cosy. The rooms are spacious, all is modern, clean and functioning and comes with a most comfortable bed.

Two hosts to die for:
Two competent, welcoming, integer and authentic characters who care for guests as individuals. We were overwhelmed to say the least. Both perfectly know how to run a guest house.

A cuisine to die for:
We opted for dinner on both nights and could not have done better. We first thought that it would be most practical to dine in and not driving to Cheviot, eat and drink and drive back in the dark. Drinking and driving do not go well together. Already after the first night's dinner we found out that this was fine dining at its best, accompanied by an excellent choice of wines, even by the glass. And for breakfast you will enjoy home made items you won't get anywhere else!

Difficult to survive these many positive experiences and impressions. We are more than happy having stayed at the Ribbonwood Country House. This certainly was a highlight in our three months traveling in New Zealand, South Pacific islands and South-/West Australia.

Should be a best kept secret but I would wish more people to enjoy this great place run by these two gorgeous men. Definitely worth to come back whenever on the South island of New Zealand.

This establishment is well run by the two very hospitable hosts who both take a real pride and joy in the place. It is a small boutique country house set atop the Cheviot township and has spectacular views towards Mts Parnassus, Isobell and the Kaikouras, especially when relaxing in the lovely outdoor spa. We stayed in the expansive and luxury ensuite room facing the mountains. Nothing was too much trouble for the friendly and helpful hosts who even lent us their fridge overnight for the storage of our large meat order from the famed local butchers,Harris. We thoroughly enjoyed a perfectly cooked meal on a shared table with convivial guests from around New Zealand. Gary and Robert have worked tirelessly to design, build and establish a very hign quality offering that is hard to find in NZ.

We were looking for somewhere to stay at short notice and happened upon Ribbonwood Country House. Such a lucky find, can't thank the hosts enough, entire experience was first class; rooms are luxurious and tastefully decorated, food delicious (we were fortunate to get an evening meal as well, it was superb, thankyou), hosts are wonderfully attentive without being over the top. Stay there if you are travelling in the area, well worth a visit. Hope to go back one day.

Whether you are going north or south on State Highway 1, take a break at Cheviot and enter a world of comfort and, let’s face it, downright luxury. Robert and Gary are warm and welcoming hosts, always ensuring that their guests’ needs are not just met but exceeded. Fabulously comfy beds, the crispest of linen, your own private deck from which to take in the spectacular views and all the small, thoughtful touches you might expect from a 5 star hotel are to be found at Ribbonwood. And if you are lucky you will dine on Gary’s truly exceptional cooking. This place deserves every one of its five stars.

Everything is wonderful about being hosted by Gary and Robert. They are attentive but discrete, made sure everything was to our liking (it sure was!). The meal they prepared was delicious. The rooms are large, comfortable, beautifully decorated with treats and a great bathroom. The bed was very comfortable with quality bedding. The vistas from anywhere on the property, inside and outside, are a feast to the eyes. The extensive gardens add to the feeling of luxury. The continental breakfast was the best we’d had in years. You will not be disappointed. We will be back.

Gary and Rob know hospitality. Every detail is taken into account. We arrived fatigued from a 5 day hike and enjoyed a warm shower in our room with a stunning view of the hills outside. Then sat down to a tasty 3 course dinner- all dishes were excellent. Afterwards we took a dip in the jacuzzi enjoying the fresh night air. We had no trouble sleeping in our very comfortable beds. The next morning we enjoyed the best continental breakfast I’ve ever experienced (fresh croissants, homemade granola, homemade butter, jam, fresh milk from their cows). Would definitely recommend staying here if you want a true luxury experience.

We absolutely loved the warm friendly welcome, our spacious room and ensuite, luxury beds and linens, the lomi lomi massage with Emmz in the on-site spa treatment room, the guest library, an elegant dining room and lounge, the friendly dogs, the chatty red shaver hens, the jersey cows, the home-made camembert, veges grown by Robert (gardener supreme) and dinners cooked by Gary (chef supreme), delicious breakfasts. You'll find this luxury retreat a few minutes out of Cheviot township, settled amongst rolling hills with spectacular views to the mountains. We stayed for two nights and loved every single detail of this purpose-built property. Gary and Robert have put their heart and soul into Ribbonwood and that's evident when they're talking to you about their journey on this land. Incredibly luxury ... this one's a keeper ... we'll be back.

While on a recent wine tasting trip from Central Otago's Pinot Noirs to Marlborough's Sauvignon Blancs, we were looking at splitting the drive into 2 days and decided to stop in Cheviot, 1 1/2 hours north of Christchurch.
WOW..... nothing could have prepared us for what we were about to discover.....
If you are looking for an incredible experience that includes the most amazing hosts, a beautiful B&B with a colourful family of farm animals in a quiet, stunning setting on top of the hill, then you have found paradise with Gary and Robert, owners of Ribbonwood Country House.
We had the most delicious supper with wine pairing, prepared by Gary himself while overlooking the rolling golden hills as the sun was setting. Since this is fine dining fine, you will have to give sufficient notice, so think ahead and plan accordingly, it's well worth it!!!
Definitely one of our top 3 memories of New Zealand after spending six weeks!

The house, the views and the gardens are beautiful. The decor is both stylish and comfortable. We enjoyed a delicious 3 course meal in the evening then relaxed under the stars in the spa pool - a wonderful way to end the day after a long drive. Gary & Robert are marvellous hosts - friendly and welcoming without being at all obtrusive. We appreciated how thoughtful they were in respect of my particular requirements. Anyone interested in plants and gardening should ask Robert for a tour of the gardens. They are gorgeous and the story of creating the house and garden interesting and impressive. We only booked 1 night to break up our journey but can easily see ourselves returning for a longer stay.

We had a marvellous stay at Ribbonwood Country House. We loved everything about this special place - a warm welcome the minute we rolled in, the room, oh the tasteful room with views! All out comfort. Delicious breakfast and chats. Despite Gary being chairperson of the garden festival running that weekend and opening up the garden, we were still made to feel special. We would return in a heartbeat.
