High in the Southern Alps, nestled amongst mountains and beech forest, is Arthur's Pass Village. A comfortable two hour drive from Christchurch, Arthur's Pass offers some of the best unspoilt hiking and scenery in New Zealand. The hiking/walking tracks vary from a one-hour walk up to the Punchbowl Falls, to a multi-day hike in the mountains.Arthur's Pass Alpine Motel, conveniently situated in the village, offers fantastic self contained Motel accommodation, complete with your own bathroom and kitchen. A recent upgrade has seen the installation of double glazed windows and doors to the majority of our units to increase warmth and decrease noise. We also offer free WIFI. Our warm, cosy cabins (some with gas fires) sleep 1-5 people. With a hotel and restaurant a short walk from our motel, it is the perfect location to base yourself for some leisurely walking and tramping, or a hike up to Avalanche Peak for a grand view of the Southern Alps. You can even meet some cheeky kea or listen to the kiwi call at night. Your hosts and owners, Pete and Fi Neale, have a wealth of knowledge about the area, having holidayed in the area for the past 40+ years.

Detailed Reviews
I made a booking at this motel on behalf of a tramping club. We virtually took over the motel for a week - we had one group of twelve who stayed here every night and enjoyed day walks in the area, two other groups which carried out longer tramps and stayed here for only a couple of nights.
Pete and Fi responded to my correspondence promptly and efficiently, and our requirements, more complicated than for the average guest, were met completely.
Everyone was more than satisfied with the rooms. They were clean, equipment and appliances all worked, the usual supply of toiletries and hot drinks and a bottle of fresh milk in the fridge. The showers - hot and good pressure - were very welcome after days of tramping in the sun.
The motel is located on the eastern side of Arthurs Pass village, about 10 minutes' walk (or two minutes' drive) from the pub and cafe. Arthurs Pass is one of my favourite locations in Nz. I would certainly stay here again on my next visit and warmly recommend it.

Reception was super informative about surrounding hikes and restaurants (there are three). Our room was spacious, clean, quaint - came with soap and conditioning shampoo, hairdryer, plenty of towels, instant coffee, hot chocolate packets, milk in the fridge. Shower had amazing water pressure and temp. Only issue is no AC; plenty of windows to open to cool down the room but then bugs get in. We were there beginning of Feb so it was warm during the day but cooled down at night.

After being greeted by the very friendly owner, we were shown some local walks and then given our room keys. The room was super cosy, scrupulously clean and had everything we needed to make our dinner and have a lovely warm shower. We will definitely be coming back here, it was great value and we really enjoyed the area. Highly recommended!

Stayed just one night but could easily have stayed longer it was so comfortable. The property is older but updated, our unit was super clean and warm, the beds very comfortable and generously supplied with tea and coffee, even fresh milk in a glass bottle. It rained non stop but we were very cosy with plenty of room and tv/dvd, free WiFi provided. Even bedroom was separate from the living space. Host super friendly, we just could not fault. Will definitely stay here again.

Just a one night stay for us in Arthur's Pass but what amazing hospitality and service.
The 2 bedroom unit had everything we needed and very generous supplies of hot drinks.
Not a lot of room if you have a lot of gear.
Hosts recommended places to eat and walks to do.
And texted us hours after we left to let us know the Lewis Pass had just opened.
Can't fault the people running it at all

There are limited places to stay actually at Arthur's Pass and perhaps it was just because we were getting near the end of the holiday and had experienced so many fantastic properties, but we thought this tacky and in need of a major upgrade e.g the bathroom door had been painted but the strip down the side where it fits into the frame was bare wood. It was cold, so we needed the heater on. The shower was small and pokey and in need of an update. At least one of the towels didn't look clean. The settee was lumpy and sunken and very uncomfortable, The kitchen facilities basic. There are laundry facilities which are outside in a open area. Parking is outside the room but tight. Thank goodness it was only one night.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We are continually upgrading our property and appreciate feedback. We are proud of the work we do on the property and will certainly take on board what you mentioned. The mountains mean we sometimes have extra chilly days when the heater makes our cabins that much cosier. We appreciate our guests letting us know if they have an issue and in particular our linen is professionally laundered in Christchurch so we can easily replace a marked towel - just ask. We did wonder what kitchen facilities you thought we lacked as we have all cutlery, crockery, pots, pans, wine glasses, drinking glasses, mugs, glass serving dishes, cheese grater, sharp knives, serving spoons, bottle openers, chopping board, stove top elements, kettle, toaster, fridge, microwave oven, detergent, dish cloths, dish brush, tea towel, salt and pepper, tea, coffee, hot chocolate, sugar...and coffee plungers available on request. Have a great day, Thanks, Pete and Fi

I was warmely welcomed by Pete the owner who was helpful getting me set up, giving me tips and directions to the hiking trails. I received a heads up email a few days before my stay about the resticted food choices in town which was also very helpful. Cottage 9 was really big with 3 beds in an upstairs room, a vast living / dinning room with full kitchen and large bedroom. The only problem if you have enough people to fill all the beds you are still left with a single bathroom. The place was clean but could use a serious refresh, the furniture and equipment are very dated except for the windows and doors that have been upgraded. A good coat of paint would help in some area and most importantly the mattress, that will make or break your stay...... definitely broke me. Hard as a rock with a pronounced sagging, felt like an old 20 old matress, I ended up sleeping on the large sofa where I finally got a couple hours of sleep. The other thing that I've noticed that needed attention was the back and front porch, both full of spider web. (see pics).
Separate from the Alpine Motel review here are a few observations about the town/location. There's not much to do in Franz Joseph and my recommendations is one night only if you have to, unless you are doing the long 8hrs trails. Lacks food options, isolated, plan accordingly.

We loved the location of this motel on our road trip of the South Island. There were a lot of things to do in the area, despite the weather. The room was a good size for our family of 4 and was warm, clean and comfortable. A separate bedroom for the kids is the ideal set up, the kitchen was well supplied and shops/restaurants nearby. Pete and Fi were friendly and welcoming, giving us some good tips on local walks and where to see kea. Would defintiely recommend or stay again if in the area.

We (three friends) stayed just one night at the Alpine Motel after a lengthy drive from Hokitika via the Pancake Rocks. After firstly stopping at the wrong place (Arthurs Pass Motel), we loved the friendly and warm reception by Fi. She is enthusiastic, warm and friendly and made us feel very welcome. The units are spotlessly clean and very well appointed with lots of attention to detail. Beds are very comfortable and we had a good nights sleep there. There was an important rugby match on that night and Fi invited us up to the Community hall where the locals all met to provide support and have fun. While we were too tired to accept the invitation, we felt part of the community by being asked. We thought that the accommodation was of outstanding value for a reasonable price. The room was very quiet for most of the night, the only disruption being some shunting of railcars going on in the middle of the night. Thank you

A nice warm and clean motel. Good communication with the hosts who also gave my partner early access which was much appreciated. Great outlook to the bush. Excellent value and we will be back. An ideal place to stay when exploring the area.
