High in the Southern Alps, nestled amongst mountains and beech forest, is Arthur's Pass Village. A comfortable two hour drive from Christchurch, Arthur's Pass offers some of the best unspoilt hiking and scenery in New Zealand. The hiking/walking tracks vary from a one-hour walk up to the Punchbowl Falls, to a multi-day hike in the mountains.Arthur's Pass Alpine Motel, conveniently situated in the village, offers fantastic self contained Motel accommodation, complete with your own bathroom and kitchen. A recent upgrade has seen the installation of double glazed windows and doors to the majority of our units to increase warmth and decrease noise. We also offer free WIFI. Our warm, cosy cabins (some with gas fires) sleep 1-5 people. With a hotel and restaurant a short walk from our motel, it is the perfect location to base yourself for some leisurely walking and tramping, or a hike up to Avalanche Peak for a grand view of the Southern Alps. You can even meet some cheeky kea or listen to the kiwi call at night. Your hosts and owners, Pete and Fi Neale, have a wealth of knowledge about the area, having holidayed in the area for the past 40+ years.

I was warmely welcomed by Pete the owner who was helpful getting me set up, giving me tips and directions to the hiking trails. I received a heads up email a few days before my stay about the resticted food choices in town which was also very helpful. Cottage 9 was really big with 3 beds in an upstairs room, a vast living / dinning room with full kitchen and large bedroom. The only problem if you have enough people to fill all the beds you are still left with a single bathroom. The place was clean but could use a serious refresh, the furniture and equipment are very dated except for the windows and doors that have been upgraded. A good coat of paint would help in some area and most importantly the mattress, that will make or break your stay...... definitely broke me. Hard as a rock with a pronounced sagging, felt like an old 20 old matress, I ended up sleeping on the large sofa where I finally got a couple hours of sleep. The other thing that I've noticed that needed attention was the back and front porch, both full of spider web. (see pics). Separate from the Alpine Motel review here are a few observations about the town/location. There's not much to do in Franz Joseph and my recommendations is one night only if you have to, unless you are doing the long 8hrs trails. Lacks food options, isolated, plan accordingly. …

The Arthus Pass Alpine Motel is a nice little accomodation. It is clean and has an own kitchen, which was very nice and also necessary to have, because the opening hours of the nearby Arthurs Pass store are not alway correct. And a great plus: It is very near to our loved keas. Thank you!

Alpine Motel is the place to stay in Arthur’s Pass. Pete & Fi’s love for the area is reflected in their wonderful motel. Pete gave us a warm welcome upon arrival and was helpful in recommending hikes for the next few days. The rooms are warm, clean & comfortable. We enjoyed cooking our own meals using their pots, pans and utensils. We appreciated the comfortable bed, instant hot water and electric heaters in each room.Highly recommend Alpine Motel

Arthurs Pass is a strange place where we could get no evening meal and this consequently had a bearing on our enjoyment staying here. It was an adequate place, warm and very clean and quiet. The bed was too small but we lacked for nothing apart from a decent TV and spasmodic internet. When I had an unexpected telephone call, the owner was very kind and let me take it on his mobile. This was very much appreciated and was kind and friendly. Thank you.

We (three friends) stayed just one night at the Alpine Motel after a lengthy drive from Hokitika via the Pancake Rocks. After firstly stopping at the wrong place (Arthurs Pass Motel), we loved the friendly and warm reception by Fi. She is enthusiastic, warm and friendly and made us feel very welcome. The units are spotlessly clean and very well appointed with lots of attention to detail. Beds are very comfortable and we had a good nights sleep there. There was an important rugby match on that night and Fi invited us up to the Community hall where the locals all met to provide support and have fun. While we were too tired to accept the invitation, we felt part of the community by being asked. We thought that the accommodation was of outstanding value for a reasonable price. The room was very quiet for most of the night, the only disruption being some shunting of railcars going on in the middle of the night. Thank you…

There is a range of accommodation in Arthur's Pass and we were glad that we chose the Alpine Motel. Pete and Fi, the owners, live on site and clearly take pride in offering comfortable, functional accommodation. We stayed for four days in unit number 9 and even though the unit has enough beds for a very large family or group of friends, it was really cosy for just the two of us, and everything worked well. The open plan layout of the living room, dining area and kitchen provided plenty of space to spread out. The kitchen is well-stocked with pots, pans, utensils, and appliances and we were able to cook some good meals with the food that we had brought with us. There are no grocery shops in Arthur's Pass so remember to bring your own food. The shower is great, the double bed in the main bedroom is large and comfortable, and the heating is very effective. That was important because it was really cold when we visited. There is even a wood-burning fire stove in the unit and a big stack of firewood on the front porch. Near the room, a robust washing machine allowed us to wash our walking clothes from the previous week. Just pay NZD 5 to Pete or Fi and the washing machine is all yours. We did not need the dryer - there were two large clothes racks that we set up in the unit. Although the motel is right on the main road, the sound-proofing is good and we did not hear any traffic noise at night time so had no trouble sleeping. We visited Arthur's Pass so that we could go on some of the walks and both Pete and Fi gave us useful tips. Pete advised us about the latest conditions on Avalanche Peak and, due to some lingering snow, recommended that we go up and back along Scott's Track. That was good advice because when we finally got up to the summit we were told by people who had come up via the Avalanche Peak track that it had been really steep and tricky in places. Pete even lent a pair of hiking poles to us when an old knee injury flared up. And, he told us about the lovely riverside walk that leads from the motel into the main part of the town - a great way to avoid walking along the busy road. When the weather came in towards the end of our stay, Fi recommended the low-level Otira Valley walk - we were the only people on the track! Overall, we were amazed at the comfort of Alpine Motel, the very reasonable cost, and at the friendliness of hosts Pete and Fi.…

We had a unit with a separate bedroom plus a bed in the lounge ... 3 of us. Well equiped and very comfortable. It rained heavily (not a surprise in Arthurs Pass) but was dry and warm inside. No noise from road or other units. Would happily stay again.

Stayed just one night but could easily have stayed longer it was so comfortable. The property is older but updated, our unit was super clean and warm, the beds very comfortable and generously supplied with tea and coffee, even fresh milk in a glass bottle. It rained non stop but we were very cosy with plenty of room and tv/dvd, free WiFi provided. Even bedroom was separate from the living space. Host super friendly, we just could not fault. Will definitely stay here again.

Very comfortable unit, which was warm, cosy and everything we could want. Plenty of room in the double unit, beautiful comfy bed and a great shower. Super-helpful hosts, and the cost was very reasonable. We will definitely stay here when we return to beautiful Arthur's Pass.

Just a one night stay for us in Arthur's Pass but what amazing hospitality and service. The 2 bedroom unit had everything we needed and very generous supplies of hot drinks. Not a lot of room if you have a lot of gear. Hosts recommended places to eat and walks to do. And texted us hours after we left to let us know the Lewis Pass had just opened. Can't fault the people running it at all
