Here in New Zealand on a two month holiday, when I arrived at Wilderness Lodge and offered either a coffee or tea with cake and was advised what Wilderness Lodge has to offer for my three nights stay, and wether I wanted my meals by myself or as part of a group and for me as a single traveler that’s great being together at dinner also at breakfast. On entering my room what greeted me was the most wonderful view looking out the the mountains. The room was clean and well presented, no TV but that’s fine as I didn’t come on my holiday to sit in front of a television. First of all I had a very restful stroll around the Rainbow Walk, and then in the early evening we had a guided walk with lots of useful information about the landscape and wildlife.
Next morning I was offered the chance to go kayaking something I had never done before after a bit of hesitation I decided to give it a go, with some of the other guests, I was teamed up in a double kayak with my instructor Michael, after we all had our life vests on off we went and I really had a great time, along with the kayaking we went ashore for coffee/Tea with biscuits, it’s the little thoughts that count for me, The Lodge has a small bar with a good selection of wines available, meals in the restaurant were for me of a high standard and well served by the whole team.
Hopefully I will return some time in the future to sample the Wilderness Lodge.

Our good-size room had a wonderful view of mountains. The room was very quiet and very dark at night. The room had a nightstand and light on each side of bed, closet, bench, mini-fridge, coffee and tea makings, desk and chair plus two easy chairs. There was no TV. The bathroom had a toilet, shower, and sink. There is a guest laundry plus a boot/coat drying room which was much appreciated after a day of rain. The excellent breakfast started at 7:30 am. Dinner did not start until 7:30pm. Both meals were included in the price as well as a guided activity. The demonstration of sheep herding and shearing was very interesting.

We loved it here!! Hannah and Michael were the most hospitable, friendly, helpful proprietors we could wish for. The property was stunning. While it’s not inexpensive, it was an excellent value - breakfast and dinner included, tea and snacks, lots of activities, daily housekeeping, laundry machines, etc. I’d highly recommend this property. So many lovely walks and places to explore. We loved learning about the sheep farm and seeing the dogs.

The Wilderness Lodge
My experience of three days staying at the Wilderness Lodge in the Arthurs Pass.
I was so very lucky to visit the Wilderness Lodge. My wonderful family planned it all as a birthday treat and we were all there together. It could not have been to a more glorious place. The lodge was surrounded by beautiful forest, rolling fields, flowing rivers as well as being cradled by the Southern Alps. The last day the Alps were covered with fresh snow and it was just magic to see those mountains - so close to us. We were able to go out walking every day to different parts of the farm and countryside with the very friendly and informative guide. On two days we went walking twice.
The lodge itself was beautiful – a fire was going in the lounge area throughout the day which, given the temperature outside, was much appreciated. We had superbe rooms, outstanding food which also catered for a non meat eating guest ( me :) and it was such a cozy, warm and comforting place to stay. I seriously recommend staying at the Wilderness Lodge. It was outstanding. "I would visit again in a heartbeat”

There is much to love about Wilderness Lodge - but mostly it is the amazing team here who take care of you. Michael and Hannah who operate the lodge are just wonderful, as is the talented chef Jamie. Our guide Paddy was so friendly, knowledgeable and lots of fun on our twice daily nature walks. The lodge is well set up with really nice rooms and everything you could want. The location is on a sheep station but surrounded by beautiful beech forest. Daily adventures were either walks from the lodge or a drive to a new and exciting location. Plan for at least three nights!

There are not sufficient stars or ratings points available to sufficiently describe the attention to detail and customer service that staff and managers of Wilderness Lodge bring to the guests experience. The location of the lodge was chosen for its sunny exposure as well as its exceptional surrounds. Daily guided walks educate guests on the workings of the sheep farm as well as the geography and history of the Waimakariri River valley. We stayed for 3 nights and were surprised daily by the care and concern demonstrated by the staff to make certain we were aware of all amenities, activities and options available to our daily planning for our time in the region. Michael & Hannah manage a stellar team of hospitality service that is beyond compare. I recommend this lodge highly both for its lodging, its menu and chef in the restaurant as well as the daily touches brought to the guests experience while visiting this stunning location.

What a treasure! If you want to take in the Arthur’s Pass area while enjoying a little luxury, this is the place! The rooms have amazing views of the valley below and the mountains in the distance. The gourmet dinners and cooked to order breakfasts were delicious. We learned about local plants, area history and sheep ranching. All staff were wonderfully helpful, but our favorite was Neil who runs the sheep ranch on the property. His tour and demonstrations were excellent, informative and entertaining, as well. We enjoyed the Wilderness Lodge so much that we immediately booked a stay at the sister lodge at Lake Moeraki.

This was one of the most memorable experiences during out time in NZ. This place is more than just a place to stay - Michael and Hannah were so friendly and accommodating, going out of their way to welcome guests and get to know you. The rooms are comfortable, with outstanding views. The free laundry is great for those on long adventures. The lodge is very clean and the common spaces and dining room is a great place to meet other travelers. The food was pretty good, especially considering the remote location. There are a wide variety of 'tracks' to walk, catering to a wide range of fitness levels. The sheep experience with Neil is fantastic and a must do if you stay here. While this was one of the more expensive places we stayed, it was, in essence, all-inclusive. You can park your car for a few days and have everything you need at the lodge. We highly recommend staying with Michael and Hannah should your travels take you to the Arthur's Pass area.

Apologies for the delay in answering...
From Christchurch you can either rent a car and drive to Wilderness Lodge Arthur's Pass (2 hours) or take once-daily train to Arthur's Pass Village. Transfers from the train station to the lodge (16km) are available.
If traveling by train, we can transfer you back to the station and you can take the train to Greymouth whereyou can continue your journey by rental car.
Both train and rental car have advantages. Both are very scenic. Having your own vehicle does allow you more flexibility to explore the area and to arrive and depart at a time that suits you.
Good luck with your travel planning and please contact us if you have further questions.
Greetings,
Twinkemelody is correct. Our guided sheep farm discovery trips which happen every second day are available only to guests staying with us.
We would love to host your family if you can fit a Wilderness Lodge stay into your itinerary.
Best wishes for your New Zealand travels,
The Wilderness Lodge Team
