At the heart of England's smallest county, on the edge of the breath-taking Rutland Water, you will find The Barnsdale, the latest fabulous addition to The Signet Collection. The former hunting lodge has been lovingly reimagined, paying tribute to its history and distinctive local area - quirky British sensibility meets elegant authentic luxury, the old blends with the new, the refined with the comfortable, and the local with the worldly.

The buildings, decor and gardens are very attractive and well maintained. Many of the staff were trying very hard to maximise the guest experience, however their efforts were hampered by there not being enough well trained staff. Examples of this :We stayed in a courtyard room and struggled to sleep because of noise from guests socialising in the outside in this courtyard up to 3.30am. I believe the only employee in action overnight was a night porter, evidently it was not his brief to deal with a rowdy crowd. Apparently wedding guests, from the hotels wedding venue. In the morning I needed to leave the hotel before breakfast, which is served from 8am. I have brought a cooler bag of breakfast provisions and was told by reception to ask the restaurant staff to put this in the fridge overnight and then night porter would retrieve it for me in the morning. The first waiter took the task with a degree of uncertainty. So I double checked with another more senior member of staff, who went to ensure this was done. At 5am the next morning the night porter could not find the cooler bag. The following day we returned because my husband had left his phone charger in the room. On first inspection by a member of staff he was told the charger was not in the room. My husband asked if he could look and there it was! The service in the restaurant is slow.

My husband really enjoyed his fish and chips dinner, I had the pea and mint risotto which had flavour but the consistency of soup.

The room was nicely decorated. Water, kettle and very nice teas in the room. A few decorative chips of paint and plaster in the bathroom. No tissues/ cotton wool pads or shower hats, but shampoo, body lotion and conditioner provided. Nice large, soft towels and crop bed linen, but cheap synthetic duvet and pillows.

The venue and location has so much potential, but management need to get to grips with the service provision.

Hi there Keg42, We're delighted to hear you enjoyed the decor & grounds of the hotel, and that you enjoyed the nicely decorated bedrooms. We do apologise about the volume of noise from the wedding party, and how late the noise went on for. It's important we hear the good & the bad, as we are always learning and improving, especially when it comes down to standards of service. We would like the opportunity to discuss this further with you, please do email me directly at marketing@barnsdalerutland.com if you'd like to discuss this further. Best, Ellie, Marketing Manager

We went to the Barnsdale and stayed for 2 nights. We had a classic room and requested a room with step free access which we were given. The room was fine, biscuits hanging on the door??, tea and coffee tray ok but there was water left in the kettle. The room was warm but the controls of the heater seemed to be broken or else I couldn't work it out so I just turned it off. There were no instructions. The shower, even with the screen in place left water all over the floor and the shower head was so high I struggled to reach it to redirect it. I was going to use the hair conditioner but it was like rancid milk and the bottles needed a good clean. Couldn't shake the conditioner because you can't remove them from their holder. The other problem with the room was that the valance was frayed around the bottom and I caught my foot in it. If that had been my disabled husband, he would have been in trouble. This sounds like a lot of complaints but it's not. I'm just pointing out things that need attention. They did not detract from our stay.
We actually had a very nice stay. We sat in the bar for drinks and then had dinner on both nights. We didn't fancy much on the main menu (that's just us) but there was a specials list which was fine. We would have just preferred a few more vegetables on the plate with the meal and oh, you had my favourite, Bread and Butter pudding.
Breakfast had a good selection but be warned, the laminate in the room stated that breakfast was included but in fact, because we booked through Hotels.com, it wasn't. Service charged is added to everything but you can ask this to be removed. We didn't because generally the service was very good. Food was a bit slow the first night but not really a big problem.
I did point out the room problems to the receptionist and hopefully they will make the necessary adjustments to the room.
We went to the Rutland Falconry Centre which was a bit muddy and Barnsdale Gardens so we intend to return later in the year for another visit.
All in all, a good trip

We arrived at the Barnsdale after a long flight from New York City. We were immediately struck by the beauty of the local area especially Rutland Water. The hotel is situated in the most scenic of locations with glorious and far reaching views all around. Walking into the reception we were greeted by a lovely wood burning stove and the friendliest staff. We were shown to our rooms that were spacious and airy and beautifully decorated with good sized bathrooms. Though the hotel lacks some of the amenities of a luxury urban hotel, like room service or dedicated bellmen it makes up for this in spades with a friendly can do attitude where no request is too much trouble. One of the real highlights of our stay was the surprisingly good food. We had dinner on our first night and it was one of the best meals we have had at any hotel and we have travelled extensively. The pan seared sea bass was cooked to perfection and the mussels were plentiful and beautifully seasoned. The food arrived in a timely fashion and they even accommodated my gluten allergy by bringing me gluten free bread to mop up all the juices from the mussels. Breakfast was also very good with a well stocked buffet and a good selection of hot entrees too. All in all we had a wonderful stay and are looking forward to returning soon.

On arrival we had a warm welcome at check-in along with a glass of wine which was much appreciated.
In our dog-friendly room there was no dog bed etc as promised, so back to reception I went. It all arrived within ten minutes along with an apology.
We were disappointed that there wasn’t a fridge in the room and only four hangers for two adults, no full-length mirror and none of the usual extras such as shower cap, vanity set, cotton wool pads or buds. The bathroom had a bath with an internal shower. As the shower screen doesn’t move out very far, my wife had to step into the bath to place the plug in. Does any designer ever try out rooms to make sure they’re practical?
There were tea and coffee sachets in the room, but only one decaffeinated coffee sachet. I went back to reception and asked for some decaffeinated tea bags, which were promptly delivered. Some biscuits would have been a nice touch, as most hotels of this standard would provide them. As the milk was not in a fridge, but in small glass bottles (whose idea was that!), within a couple of hours it was warm.
Dinner was a fiasco with most of the staff hanging around the till system, with their backs to the customers, paying little attention to us. We had to ask someone to take an order from us. The first thing on the menu are nibbles to have “while you decide”, so we ordered the local Hambelton bread, which I had to repeatably ask for and took about twenty minutes to arrive. When the bread finally did arrive, it was then only five minutes later that the starters appeared. We sat down at 7.15pm and were still waiting for any kind of food until almost 8pm, with many of the staff still huddled around a computer screen. When our main meal finally arrived, they managed to get my wife’s order wrong, (fat chips not frites), so back it went. I was left eating alone for some time until my wife’s meal came back out. Our meal with pre-dinner and table drinks came to the grand total of £252.00. For once I examined the bill and was horrified to see that I was being charged £2.50 for every splash of coke I had with my vodka! West end prices with rubbish service. No tip.
On returning to our room and closing the curtains we discovered a very large snail attached to the curtain. How this is even possible I have no clue. The housekeeping staff thought this funny when we mentioned it to them on checking out. Says it all.
Breakfast followed a similar pattern to dinner with my wife’s order being incomplete, (vegetarian sausage was a no-show) and therefore having to send it back to the kitchen for the sausage to be added. Once again, I was eating alone for some time until her meal finally returned.
We stayed in one of the hotels Royal rooms at a cost of £305 per night BB, which I prepaid. So, along with our £252 dinner bill, the total bill came to £557 for a night’s stay. Not worth it and I’m sure by now you probably have realised we won’t be going back.
I fully expect the stock answer from the hotel, but let’s see.

The good point was the food was good, but slow service and a couple of the staff had no idea of what they were doing. The room was fine, but the bed was far too high for a disabled person, I had to have assistance to get into the bed. The bathroom did not have a plug for the sink or a lid over the toilet, both of which I consider to be essential. This was our second trip but will not be visiting again.

We received a warm welcome and a glass of complimentary wine on check in.
We were shown to a ground floor room with a walk-in wardrobe and bathroom.
The buildings were once a working farm with 3 ft thick walls.
The dog was catered for with bowls, toys, a dog bed and treats.
The staff were ultra friendly and efficient.

We were not quite so happy with the menu.

In terms of cleanliness it was very good in the public areas, but we did find black mould on the bathroom tiles and on the glass and frame of the secondary glazing in the bedroom.

Altogether a comfortable, relaxing stay.

We recently stayed at the Barnsdale with other members of family, who gathered to celebrate a big birthday, which took place nearby in Oakham.
Our stay was delightful, as was the hotel. The staff are all so pleasant & helpful; the rooms are very comfortable, & it seemed like most had proper King-sized (or 'superking-sized') beds. The decor is classy & tasteful. The surroundings are beautiful. We didn't try the spa, but other family members used the heated pool & changing facilities, and were complimentary.
The food & service in the bar / restaurant was excellent. We had 2 breakfasts, and drinks/dinner one night. All were very good.
The only negative was the booking process, and difficulty in getting hold of anyone on the phone when there was an issue. We were not the only members in our party who experienced the latter. We had chosen to stay in a 'Royal' room, and had enquired via e-mail whether such a room would get the benefit of the group discount which was being offered on 'regular' rooms. The price we were quoted was actually significantly higher than the rate which was available online via the hotel's own website, for Royal rooms. When we queried this we were told it was a mistake, & immediately offered a rate matching their website rate. We were also told that we had to pay the full amount up front (3 months in advance), as that was part of the group package 'arrangement', even though we were paying the same as the online rate (i.e. no discount). Then there was a problem with the hotel accepting my American Express card.
However, aside from the issues with making/paying for the reservation, our actual stay was lovely. Its in a great location, very close to Rutland Water and nearby Oakham.

We originally booked our wedding in Cyprus we flew out there and we really didn’t feel happy or comfortable with it. We picked Normanton Church for our wedding and that just left us looking for a reception, we walked into a couple of venues and just did not get the feeling we wanted. When we got to The Barnsdale we only just walked through the reception and both said this is the one before we even saw the hotel or even the staff, that was it we booked the venue .

Connie and Bethany are two of the most lovely people we’ve ever come across, over the past year emailing them both back and forth they were always so quick to reply and nothing ever seemed to be to much trouble. They went over so much with us the small details that we didn’t even think about. And on the day of the wedding again they were both so amazing they were always around when I needed to ask them something, and once again they made it seems like a breeze the whole day was just amazing and I will forever be grateful to the both for giving me a day that I could never imagine.
As lovely as the girls were they were not the only two who made us feel so welcomed the weekend of our wedding, we had family who had travelled hours to come and stay and on arrival the receptionist was so happy and welcoming I was feeling a little nervous at this time but honestly I just relaxed ones I saw a really friendly face. We had a meal the night before and again the waitering stuff were excellent our food was really quick and gorgeous! The staff on our wedding day was brilliant having to mange with loud music and people drinking they were just always smiling asking people if they had a good time, the food came out so quickly we had 7 tables and I remember looking up from eating and everybody had their meals the food again was amazing ! Unfortunately I don’t think many people could eat the evening BBQ because the wedding breakfast was just so lovely. I can’t forget to mention the grounds of the hotel were also just so beautiful everything was just maintained to an amazing standard. An also all the cleaning staff I meet they also can not go unnoticed on how everything was clean the rooms were beautifully made, and they always said hello and opened doors. It’s just so lovely to see staff so happy to be doing what they are doing. I never write a review on trip advisor but I just think the hotel and their staff should not go unnoticed. A lot of family and friends want to come back to the hotel they do want us to through a party every year now but me and Jake Will definitely be coming back they can pay for the next party!
Thank you from
Mr & Mrs Brown

Decided to come here for lunch after a day out in the Rutland area, the hotel and bar area are really well decorated throughout and had a nice cosy feel on a wet and windy day.

The food we ordered was delicious we cannot fault each course, I had the set menu and my husband chose off the main menu, the food was of high standard and was more than enough for an afternoons lunch.

The service on the whole was very polite, but sadly we had a couple of instances where we had to chase foods and drink, we waited over 45 mins for outlet started (soup and salad) we thought it was a bit odd as other people who came after us where receiving their food and we weren’t, thankfully one of the waitresses noticed and came back to apologies as the order ticket hadn’t printed, not a problem and they kindly shouted us a drink, mains came out fine and once those were done I ordered a cheese course and my husband a drink, 20 mins later and after asking two waiters about both the drink and the cheese course they finally came, again apologetically.

The staff were very polite dealing with both issues so cannot felt that it was just a shame it happened and we felt overlooked as guests, hence the 3 star review, food was delicious though and we were perhaps unlucky.

We have just returned from a weekend at this hotel and I think that it is important to start with the positives:

POSITIVES

Food was excellent but see below.

Spa facilities were excellent and included in the price. The hot tubs were great with a wonderful aroma of smoke. Pool was heated to a lovely temperature and sauna has a great view.

Very clean room and comfortable bed.

Very good location.

NEGATIVES

Throughout the weekend much of the car park was closed due to some car test drive function. People staying at the hotel should have priority as it took ages to find a parking space.

Room was extremely dark. Brighter lights needed.

Service at breakfast on Sunday morning was appalling and the front desk admitted that they had never had so many complaints. There were probably about sixty people having breakfast but only three staff, who tried their best but it simply was not enough. When we arrived there was no orange juice, bowls, butter or yogurt and it took about 15 minutes for this to be resolved. Some friends had been waiting an hour for their cooked breakfast and so we didn't bother and got a discount instead.

At both the meals and at breakfast coffee and tea were served but we had to ask for milk.

At the meal on Saturday evening I asked for an extra roll for my pate and the initial reaction was that the chef had only done enough for one roll per person.

The doors to each of the men's and women's changing rooms in the spa open directly onto the locker area where people are changing into swimming costumes.

We do have separate changing room cubicles and bathrooms for guests to get changed in if they'd prefer, I do apologise if that wasn't made clear during your visit. We do hope you'll visit The Barnsdale again soon. Best, Ellie at The Barnsdale
