Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We stayed the Saturday of Easter 2024, arriving about 6:30 that evening. The place was lively, and immediately walking through the door, we felt a welcoming feeling. With a solo artist performing great tunes, we made our way through to the bar, and from that point on, nothing was a problem. All were most courteous and glad to have our custom. The food was perfect and most satisfying, and the room was large, clean, and tidy. All in all, it was a fantastic night in New Zealand country. A special thanks to Jeff and the team.
Cheers
Martin & Karen

The Whaka is open for business! Bowled in for a spot if lunch and it’s Sunday! Lovely food. Jeff behind the bar, is a superb host! The beer garden is beautifully manicured and I’m so pleased they kept the fruit trees. Jeff tells us they’ll be open 7 days from December 4 through to Easter. We’ll be back!

Stayed two nights in King room. Lovely staff and very warm welcome. Good food. New owners have only been operating it since Oct 23 and from the sounds of things it was a bit run down prior to this. Building is old and a bit tired, but it's clean and comfortable and the welcome makes up for any shortcomings. It's an old pub, so there are noises from the bar, but the manager ensured the juke box was turned down. A lovely piece of Kiana.

This place has so many issues. One disgusting toilet for the whole camp ground. The pub toilets are available if there isn’t a band playing in the garden bar, otherwise they block them off… but they’re more disgusting anyway. The water for the camper buses just trickles out and it’s brown. The 2 showers available are disgusting and always hogged by the people staying in the cabins right next to them, as it is for the one toilet. With nzs struggling tourism places like this need to spend some serious money sprucing up . I will never stay in the camp ground here again. One of the toilet seats was so smashed up they had just taped it back together. Horrible.

Hi Weppy. I'd have to agree with you. I own the hotel but it has been leased out for the past 6 years and has slowly deteriorated to cause this terrible experience. To be fair IT IS NOT A CAMPGROUND and I have only ever allowed self contained campers for which I did not charge as there are no facilities. We take the property over again and will be upgrading the whole property but are unlikely to ever become a campground as it is uneconomical to do so although we often help out people with a place to stay when they are unable to stay at the Castlepoint Campground because they have animals or are unvaxxed. We look forward to seeing you at The Castle Bar again soon.

Came here twice for beers/wines and dinner 1 night, Staff were great, locals were friendly. Food was fab. a few bits of play equipment for the kids was a huge bonus. We asked what the pasta of the day was and my daughter got choose what was made that night which she thought was awesome. Will definitely be coming back here next time we are down.

We had the King room..Huge room !
Nice to have a pint poured while we checked in too.
Such friendly staff and the food in the pub was magnificent, we both chose the Seafood basket and loved it.
A great place to stay after see the lighthouse and coast.
An experience I shall treasure and not forget.

Water ran brown from the outside kitchen at the Cabins at the Whakataki Hotel. No sign saying not to drink the water, just noticed it and got a shock. Showers and toliets in bad condition with exposed concrete and rust. Worse than what I imagine a prison to be like..

Thanks for your feedback. I own the hotel and I too was shocked to find the place in such a state and because of this we have bought the business back off the leasee and have already renovated most of the rooms. We officially take over 1 April 2022 and can assure you a great experience in the future.

I stayed in the Nemo room recently and what a great place to rest your head. The staff are friendly, clean rooms, good value menu and a quiet location. Throw in the garden bar and playground and it makes for a wonderful stay. It is popular with visitors and friendly locals alike. The complimentary continental breakfast made the stay great value. Will be back!

Room was quite large but mouldy ceilings, no tv and a noisy loo weren't great. Possum living in the ceiling wasn't conducive to sleep.
Dinner was very good and breakfast was fine. The pub itself though did not have a very welcoming atmosphere.

Took an overnight to castlepoint and stayed at this hotel. Loved the vibe of the place, the bed was super comfy and the service was friendly and attentive. The food was okay and the continental breakfast was good. I wasn't prepared for the sandflys which are still causing me grief so take repellent, but the thing that concerned me the most was that the shared bathroom could have some attention as an abundance of left over soaps from other guests were still in the shower cubicle. This has discouraged me from visiting again as I see this as a really important hygiene issue and this has lowered my rating and spoilt what was an otherwise great experience as it left me wondering about the overall cleanliness.
