We booked again into the "Solway Park" hotel on a stay for three days - Thursday to Sunday. We have stayed here before and as usual it was lovely. The hotel is getting in need of a refurbish but in these covid times it was very welcoming and delivered everything we expected. The room was clean and well presented. The staff were helpful and welcoming. We were here to watch rugby on Saturday afternoon but took time to visit Martinborough, Featherston and Carterton as well as Masterton. The hotel is operating under covid restrictions so not everything was able to be used. The restaurant served an excellent breakfast which we enjoyed. We enjoyed the helpful staff and the check-in was efficiently completed. Once again the hotel was an excellent base for the three days we were there.

Rooms and food not 4 star by any stretch of the imagination. My Dad's hot chocolate was cold, but was replaced with a hot one when my cousin requested it. My evening meal was covered in black pepper, including the Wakanui steak, which was not on the menu as a peppered steak. My requested replacement steak was thin, gristly, and rubbery, and I was given fries rather than the steamed vegetables I had ordered. I did not eat either meal, but only managed to argue down to paying half price.

While the room was comfortable it certainly DID NOT qualify for status. The door to the bathroom would not close, a repair was requested the next morning, that evening still not done so I asked again if could be fixed. It STILL was not fixed by midnight. I mentioned it when checking out and was informed "this is an old establishment and there is lots of things to do"!!!! SO WHY STILL CHARGING TOP DOLLAR THEN???? (because they have a monopoly as a conference center, thats why! I will be reluctant to revisit

Nothing really wrong with the room and facilities and the room service menu was good and well priced. But compared with other places we have stayed at this price point it seemed a bit overpriced. Finer for a one night stay.

This was our third time staying and we enjoyed ourselves. Staff were great and helpful and the indoor pool is always a hit with the kids. Rooms are tidy and clean and breakfast buffet also delish! The new subdivision has meant that the cafe, driving range and playground have gone so it would be great to see some investment into family orientated activities (games room, playground, sport options etc.) as they are getting a bit tired. Overall still a good hotel and in an awesome spot for a get away from the city. We will be back.
