Covid 19 put NZ into lockdown. We were lucky enough to be here. A stunning property with all the comforts of home. We were in the Sealion Unit which has the separate bedroom. The 5 weeks flew by. The beach walks were different every day. The wildlife of sealions, birds etc made for an interesting experience. The surrounding area offers many short walks through bush and wetlands. The waterfalls are spectacular. Supermarkets are approximately 20 mins away. Pauline and Willy went out of their way to ensure that we had everything we needed. Better hosts you could not ask for. We loved the place we will back next year to finish the trip that got interrupted by Covid.

Fantastic location right next to a beach which has easy access and it's own sealions. Plenty of room, cooking facilities, outdoor seating and a small private garden. We also had breakfast provisions included which were useful as the nearest shop is a few miles away. Parking on site. Down the road, a short drive away is the penguin hide and the lighthouse

I am reluctant to post a review because I want to keep this place just for myself. But, seriously, this is spectacular. We stayed in the Lighthouse suite which has views over the ocean, up the beach to the north and all the way down to the lighthouse on Nugget Point to the south. The seascape is magnificent. Sunrises in winter are late enough to encourage a lie in, and when they come they are breathtaking. The sky and sea are alive with reds, golds, oranges and purples. At night the Milky Way covers the sky. And all this to the tune of the waves on the rocks below. Pauline is an excellent host and is very quick to communicate by email. The breakfasts are absolutely fine, more than we would normally have at home but this is a holiday! It is not a cooked breakfast, consisting of cereal, fresh fruit, yoghurt, fresh bread, butter and jam. We recommend putting your breakfast together, pulling back the drapes and becoming engrossed with the sea. The suite is in very good condition, the bed is comfortable and the lounge seating is excellent. A very good heat pump ensures that the interior of the suite is warm and cozy. The kitchen has a stove with oven, a microwave, a fridge, a toaster, a kettle and plenty of pots, pans, crockery and cutlery. A coffee plunger is provided along with coffee, tea and milk. The bathroom has an excellent shower and is modern. There is TV, should you tire of the stars and the wifi connection is very good. I know there are other wonderful places to stay on this coastline, but for something quite special this is recommended as one of the best. Thank you!

Amazing location, great hosts, very comfortable accommodation. We had the lower Sea Lion unit so had a lovely garden, as well as a bedroom with a sea view. Lots of great touches, like the binoculars (useful to watch a sea lion lounging then sliding back into the sea). Generous breakfast provision. Great spot for beachcombing - everything from weird driftwood to paua shells and big turban shells. Ideal location to explore the Catlins - 5 minute drive to Roaring Bay for penguin viewing.

We stayed at Nugget Lodge for three nights in February. The location cannot be beat and the unit was very clean and tidy. The view from our unit was incredible and we saw lots of birds and sea lions on the beach. The proprietor was lovely and very friendly. She even sent a forgotten item to us in Auckland. The only reason I did not give the location 5 stars was because of the breakfast, which was expensive for what we received and needed to be cooked ourselves. Otherwise highly recommended.
