Sad to say this place did not match the description. Ghost ship is a good description. Having been told the only available room was a luxury suite we booked anyway. struggled to navigate to the room because signage was ambiguous, difficulty getting lighting operational, sitting watching tv ( not Sky) when our door is opened by another guest whose key obviously opens all the rooms! No wifi! Bathroom shabby with minimal supplies and mould on tiles, hot water lukewarm.

Chose location for some luxury for a special occasion and paid the price accordingly. Difficulty with telephone conversation and mutual understanding; service at reception minimal and with disinterest; little attempt to welcome and no concept of escorting guests to a room or concern for luggage. Reception area presentable although elsewhere showed signs of needing attention. Initially the decor of the room looked reasonable, although dated but later the room and particularly the bathroom needed considerable up-grading. Wifi coupon provided had expired and after contacting reception, we were requested to go and collect another coupon which failed to work as the connection was extremely poor. Although conversations from the restaurant below could be clearly heard in our first floor room, the Indian restaurant/bar provided good friendly service and a good choice of food. All the way through felt they were only interested in taking your money and service was almost non-existent. Beautiful outlook with a rotunda lit up at night; accommodation does not begin to match its location.

Firstly I must start with the good points that the lodge has a lovely outlook onto the canal area and is close to nearby bar and restaurants. Wifi was also provided with a very limited data allowance. The beds were adequate though a little uncomfortable but the room we had was at least quiet. However I am glad we weren't staying for more than one night due to some glaring inadequacies. First of which has to be the dated bathrooms and cheap bathing products provided. The shower was simply awful and really soured the experience staying here. Considering the price paid I was expecting a little better than what was offered. I would definitely avoid staying here if ever in Whangaparaoa again.

My wife and I stayed for 6 nights in march from the time we checked in the staff were unpleasant as I counted approx 8 persons whom were suppossed staff members although you wouldn't know about it unless they were behind the counter as only two had name tags on and know one had uniforms that represented where they worked very unprofessional as my wife and I are resort managers in noosa qld Australia.
I agree with the previous comments reference markings on walls and noise, every single wall including our bedroom had patchwork and the bar downstairs every single night past 11pm music and patrons very inconsiderate & when enquiring from staff about excevise noise a simple schrug of the shoulders response.we had to move rooms the first night as the fridge was faulty the lamp was broken the tv had bad reception so they upgraded us to a king size room which we were greatful about however the second day we were in there and we were out for the day a banner had appeared hanging from our balcony with the word "hotel" on it when our door had do not disturb on it which was not respected as I thought we were staying in a lodge not a hote. The Thai restraunt downstairs was apauling and the restraunt carpe Diam's service was shocking, it was untidy and one on the windows had a kiss mark on it. There were a lot I could go on about but could not find the room.i grew up on the coast and always dreamt staying at the lodge as a child but this experience has turned my wife and I staying here again so I recamend if you like staying up very late by noise and woken early by construction then I recamend it but if not stay very far away

Hi everybody, I had my wedding very nearby Gulf Harbour Lodge and suggested to my guests to use this accomodation. Worst mistake!!!!! I had booked months in advance and the day before the wedding (the day one lot of guests were to check in) they were told there was no disability room available - for my grandmother who was in a wheel chair.
A number of my guests had trouble contacting them. When I contacted to try and find out who had booked etc I couldn't get anyone who knew any details (just cleaners). I waited for 30 mins at the office one day and no one came after ringing the phone number etc. We booked one of the suite rooms for the night of the wedding (supposed to be the best). There wasn't even a bottle of water in the fridge when we got there. Absolutely nothing special, just a lack of air, a crappy shower and a hard bed! Do not waste your time or money!!!

Booked in for two nights as it is close to Gulf Harbour Marina and my boat was temporarily
uninhabitable.
Booked into a second floor room with views over the 'canal'. We seemed to be the only guests and after booking in did not see anyone at reception again.... it was a bit like being on 'the ghost ship'.
The room? The bathroom... good shower apart from the long black hairs.... but only one piece of soap.
Two lights in the entrance .... the only light in the main room was a single lamp between the two beds... the only other light in the room , a standard lamp, did not work. Went to phone reception about that but no phone in the room....
Carpet worn and stained and a few holes in the curtains.
No free wi-fi... seems you have to go to reception and pay for access.
But what really made me downgrade it from poor to terrible was that, having gone out at 0800 and returned at 1700, we came back to a room that had not been made up during the day, beds not made, milk in the fridge not replenished.

On the positive side Chait's Indian restaurant down stairs was very good.

We booked a 3 day stay... Had to pay in total which was odd and we're told we could park 'anywhere we wanted' in the public car park... We were told we were in room 38, after we walked there to find there was no room 38, the receptionist informed us there was a room 38 and we just hadn't seen it. Feeling like idiots we went to go find it. Luckily the cleaner stopped us and informed us there are no numbers past 37. The receptionist then informed us in 4 years she hadn't known that. Once we got to the room we could tell why.... The room seemed to have not been opened in the 4 years.... The smell was so intense I couldn't stand to be in it. We opened the room up and hurried away, the corridor didn't smell much better and was grubby and patchy.

The bathroom was revolting, black hair everywhere... (We are blond) the plug blocked with black scum and long black hair. The shower pressure was good but starts hot and fades to warm the entire time.. Not fun. The entire bathroom needed a scrub.

Thought we would watch telly, no sky tv... No TV guide..
Thought we would listen to the radio, stereo wires not even plugged in..

Two of every utensil (one glass) and no knife or cutting board or anything.
We too we're kept awake by yelling and singing from downstairs and had to sleep with the tv on.
Bedside lamp didn't go and as the room had no light itself that was annoying..

No one came to clean day two, wouldn't have minded except there was no scrubbing brush to clean my dishes properly.

NEVER anyone at reception.
NO guides to what we could eat below us and instead told to go to the country club down the road.

Day 3 the cleaner came... Didn't clean ANYTHING, didn't vacuum.. Didn't replace the dishes.. Didn't wipe anything.. Didn't bother to replace the toilet paper that was empty (lucky there was tissues!)

Seems they have given up.. Everyone has moved out from the place so it feels empty and run down, no one cares anymore. The one receptionist we spoke to on day one was nice but we never saw another one. Upon leaving no one bothered to ask how my stay was.

For 220 a night it's seriously not worth it. Beautiful location but totally let down by poor management/cleanliness/standards.. Sad really.

We checked in then were told to pay upfront. After she put the transaction through, told us there was an issue with the water pressure and to turn off the shower for a few minutes and try again. Had a wedding in the afternoon and when I went to have a shower there was no pressure at all. The shower wouldn't even stay on due to lack of water pressure. I eneded up going to the in-laws room for a shower and they had great pressure. We made a complaint at the same time as another guest, and nothing happened.
Next morning used the toilet and when I had to flush, there was no water in the cistern. I tried for the next 15mins and still coulnd't flush. Ended up going to a cafe for breakfast and 1 hour later went back to the room and was finally able to flush.
During check out we complained and asked what sort of compensation we'd receive as we paid full price $200.00 for the night. THe manager was completly unhelpfull and wouldn't do anything. She apparently needed to talk to the 36 owners! Complete BS. We are going to be disputing the charge now and will be winning. When we left, not in very happy moods mind you, she had the cheek to say "smile it's a lovely day". I almost went in and smacked her round the head.
DO NOT STAY HERE. We weren't the only ones to have problems and have the manager do nothing.

Was a little dubious after seeing reviews about noise but my stay was fine!
Its not the Ritz Carlton but its clean, tidy, comfortable enough.
Large room with two double beds and ok bathroom. Decent value in the area.
Places to eat and drink and mini supermarket adjacent and a nice view by the marina.

The room itself was quite nice, and the staff were amenable. Upon checking in on a Friday night we were warned that the bars downstairs could get a little noisy, but its usually dies down around 12am. Awesome start. I didn't really want to pay $110 a night for that, but what can you do - they were otherwise booked up. We were staying in room 16 - the signage stated room 1 - 15 and then 17 - whatever it went up to. 16 wasn't even listed, so we had to go back to find out that its actually on the same level as 1-15. . . ok. We found our room, at the end of the corridor - get inside, and the lighting isn't working properly. It was around 9pm - so dark, and we couldn't really see a thing. We fiddled with the keys a little and got that working. The TV and lamp however, not so easy to get working. More fiddling and playing around meant we finally got that sorted also. Room 16 is directly above the bar - so if you want peace and quiet, this is not the room for you. Its a corner room, so there are 2 balconies, but they aren't very private, The curtains on a small window also provide no blockout form the sun, so we were kept awake by the noise, then woken with the sparrows because the room became super bright around 7am. There is also no A/C - so you literally have to open all the doors and windows for any airflow into the room. At the beginning of March - its still very warm, so this made for very uncomfortable living. The TV stopped working that morning, so they attempted to bring us another. This one also didn't work, so we decided to go out for breakfast. The Cherry Café was lovely, and the prices were decent. There is some shops across the road if you want to pick up milk etc. Saturday night the noise became almost unbearable, as it seemed the tapas restaurant across the way had some sort of function. I can only presume those people then visited the bar directly under us to continue the party. I was quite unwell, so managed to sleep through most of it, my partner however, not so lucky. I would recommend if you want to stay here you request a room as far away from the bars as possible (although I'm not really sure its possible). If you only there for a night and its just a place to rest your head rather late after a big event, its probably fine. A romantic getaway it most definitely is not. I also wouldn't really recommend it for young children. The staff did the best with what they had and were very polite and granted us a late check out with no extra cost. I'm still pretty certain I won't be staying there again though.
