Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is a great place to stay: located a bit off the main road through town, the units are very spacious (with large living/kitchen area), clean, well maintained inside and outside, with outside seating in front of the unit, reasonably priced, and friendly, caring owners; would definitely book again.

This was an excellent find. Beautiful cabins that had all the amenities. Beautiful grounds and a nice walk on the property down by the river. Staff was very pleasant. The cabin was spotless and the bed and linens were excellent. Have breakfast at the tackle shop on the property. It was very good. Wish we could have stayed longer

First stayed here in 2012 with spouse, and returned this year on a fly fishing trip. Executive suite was perfect, with full kitchen and spotless housekeeping. King bed was very comfortable, and managers were helpful.

This is a gem with clean spacious rooms, excellent kitchen facilities & beautiful surroundings. Barbecues & outdoor furniture are set under large trees. It’s a short walk to the river trail which can be walked or ridden.

You are accommodated in an individual chalet with outdoor seating area in lovely tree-lined gardens with access to the river with its beautiful walkway. The only thing to disturb the peace is the tweeting of the many birds. Our chalet (no 2) was one of the oldest of the 19 on the park and the fittings were a little dated but it contained everything you need and was spotlessly clean. A convenient gateway to the Tongariro National Park, and Turangi town has some local shops and restaurants. We had excellent quality breakfasts both days at the Creel Lodge cafe onsite.

Excellent time had my wife and I love the proximity to the river and have taken advantage of the river for fishing as well as local walks. The cabin was clean and warm while I found the staff helpful and pleasant.

My experience was very different from that of other reviewers. My children and I arrived and upon opening the door to our chalet were met with an overpowering chemical smell. We opened all the windows but it didnt abate so I went back to reception to tell them about it. They already knew!. In fact they had created the smell to try to cover the overwhelming smell of fish that the previous visitors had left. He came round told me that there was nothing he could do, he would give me a refund if I wanted to move elsewhere but thought everywhere was fully booked and left. Still no apology - his manner was dismissive. We had to leave the door and all the windows open for the rest of the day. When we returned the chemical smell had lessened but the original fishy smell had returned. Luckily we had friends in another chalet so we were able to eat with them and only used our accommodation to sleep in. We were there for two days and spent almost no waking hours there. When I checked out the owner still didn't even apologise, he didnt offer any reduction in the price charged. The customer service was shocking. We were all so upset. It was a rotten holiday.

I chose this place based on reviews - as most people do, but without being entirely sure I was making the right choice. I needed a base close to the National Park for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, and Turangi is a very proximate location. Not sure I fancied staying at a ‘Fishing Lodge’, but booked anyway. This was a great decision. Creel Lodge has an upscale ‘holiday park’ feel, with large self contained units generously spaced amongst impressive gardens with amazing trees and landscaping. Built in the 80s yes, and it does have an authentic yesteryear feel about it, but the units are so well appointed and maintained - not to mention spotlessly clean - that this is more of a plus point than a negative. A hark back to a not so distant quality past. One where you have your own parking, and can chill on your balcony terrace in the garden with a beer and enjoy the surroundings. Even have a BBQ if you fancy that. No commercial cramming or upselling going on here…. The whole fishing theme is real - the mighty (and stunningly beautiful) Tongariro River is just outside the back gate - and, as the premier trout fishing river in the country, the fishing theme is strongly reflected in all the room decor. I loved it to be honest even though I’m not a fisher-person - it reminded me of the personality and purpose of this small part of the world. We are a long way from vanilla 4-star hotels and elevator muzak. Tim the manager is a proper old school Kiwi host - friendly and dour at the same time, but he can’t do enough for you. Need coins for the washing machine? Tick. Recommendations for the local area? Tick. A bit of casual banter? Tick. I would come back here in a heartbeat. 3 nights in many places is too long, but here it nowhere near long enough.
