We stayed at River Birches for 2 days to celebrate a birthday. The lodge is immaculate and set in beautiful gardens alongside the river. Jason organised a wonderful guide (Andrew) for our first attempt at fly fishing and then smoked and couriered our catch of a large Brown Trout to our home. River Birches is the perfect location for a short break to enjoy the river, the lake, the mountains and some quiet time too.

Yes that was a very nice brown trout you caught, what a great way to start your birthday. It was our pleasure to have the two of you here. For next years birthday perhaps the Tongariro Crossing will be on the list.

Stayed here for 4 nights from the 10th of January as part of our staycasion in NZ, the accommodation is extremely comfortable and clean and the hosts Jason & Rebecca were great from start to finish; nothing was too much trouble for them. We would highly recommend this as THE only place to stay when in the Tongariro area. Thank you both for a wonderful stay, we hope to see you again one day!

River Birches is a luxury lodge set in Turangi a stone’s throw from the Tongariro River which is famous for trout fishing. The lodge is set up for rich overseas visitors and in my opinion is overpriced. Yes, we had TV which was at times unwatchable due to poor signal. The chef Anthony served a delicious cooked breakfast, but there was little choice compared with similar lodges. Whilst we enjoyed our stay we would not repeat the experience.

Terence, thank you for your note. It was nice having the two of you with us. We are pleased to read that you found us "very welcoming" and that chef Anthony's breakfast was delicious. We often receive high praise from most other guests about our breakfast selection. I am sorry that you felt different. I do apologize for the SKY-TV reception during your visit. We have looked into this and it seems to have been atmospheric conditions, rain fade. However, we will keep a close eye on this. In relation to the price. We pride ourselves in that we are a Qualmark Luxury Lodge. Maintaining luxury services does come with a cost as I am sure you can appreciate. We do hope that you may one day return.

Our family of 4 stayed at the cottage for a few days in winter. It was lovely - very high standard rooms and facilities, perfectly clean, well heated, and all details attended to (daily ‘lite’ cleaning, and fresh bread, milk, juice and fruit for breakfast). Very highly recommended.

My husband and I stayed at River Birches for the last three nights of our New Zealand trekking vacation. Jason and Rebecca were fantastic! Jason provided first-rate advice on hiking the Tongariro Crossing, including weather, gear, and transportation. After conquering that day of other-worldy views, he provided tips and transportation assistance for other local hikes - the Tongariro River walk is right outside their door! Breakfasts and dinners at the lodge offered delicious food (kudos to Chef Anthony) and an opportunity to meet other guests from around the world. However, our favorite conversations were with Jason and Rebecca themselves - they are such wonderful and interesting people!

It was our pleasure having the two of you here. The Tongariro Crossing is truly one of the world's best day hike and we are so glad you did it. Guided or self-guided it is a must-do activity. We do look forward to your return so that you may try your hand at fly fishing. Both Rebeca and I truly enjoyed your company and will share your kind words with Anthony and our staff.
