You'll find Kaimanawa Lodge in the town of Turangi at the southern end of Great Lake Taupo. The town is nestled in the bend of the mighty Tongariro River, bounded by the majestic mountains and the expansive lake. Moody, powerful, elemental, breathtakingly beautiful! It is a place that eases itself into your soul and never leaves. Modern and comfortable, the resort is perfect for those wanting to make the most out of their New Zealand escape. During the winter months, the towering snow-capped mountains are a haven for winter sports and the air reverberates with the gentle whisper of skis on fresh fallen snow.

This resort is small, comfortable, and has an easy going, no worries attitude. Loved the cabins with their knotty pine walls, up to date bathrooms and air conditioning. The staff are willing to help you organize activities, lend you bikes, and help in any way they can. This was one of our favorite small places that we have been through RCI.

The one bedroom unit was of ample size, well equipped and very clean. The grounds were spacious, tastefully landscaped and very well maintained. The pool and pool area were great. The high standard in all areas of this lodge reflects the time, care and pride of Rae and Jim. It’s a great place to stay and there are many nearby activities.

If you want a small, excellently run, quiet, spotlessly clean and comfortable home-from-home then visit Ray & Jim! The very best of Hosts and Managers, the very nicest of people, they run this place with a quiet efficiency and an absolute commitment to the people who stay. Ray is a formidable, lovely Lady and an excellent cook so don't miss her weekly feast! Jim is charming and knows everything about the area and always share his knowledge with anyone who wants to ask. We are annual visitors to NZ for 15 years and have been to all points of the compass down there but if we had to choose anywhere to stay for a few weeks rather than a few days it would be here. Only sorry this awful virus means we will not be in our favourite Units 12 or 13 in 2021! Hope to see our friends again at Kaimanawa in 2022!

We enjoyed our stay at Kaimanawa Lodge. Very convenient location to walk into Turangi town and also to get to the highway to explore the area. The only thing that lets it down is that I could hear the people in the adjoining unit. There was a door between the units which unfortunately meant it was very "thin" there. I could hear their alarm going off in the morning and also their bathroom fan which they left on for hours on end. Apart from that, we enjoyed our visit. The hosts were very friendly and offered any help we needed. We didn't use the pool as it was unheated.

My 2nd stay at Kaimanawa Lodge. 1st time was a 1 brm and this time was a Studio. Unit was spotless and complex is very nice and well situated. The Studio was more spacious and better equipped than i was expecting and had everything in the unit you needed to self cater if you wished. Only thing missing was a washer and dryer which was available free of charge in a communal laundry. Very happy with my stay at this property and would be happy to stay again.

We had a two bedroom unit, which is in fact a house. It was the perfect place to stay for our needs. Staying in Turangi adds 40 minutes both ways to most day trips, and perhaps Taupo is a more central base but then we wouldn't have stayed in this excellent resort.

We stayed in a studio unit, had everything that we needed. Very quiet place. The managers Jim and Ray are a delightful couple, Ray makes the best scones for the Saturday morning get together and Jim gives a great run down on the area. The whole resort is well maintained and nicely presented.Would certainly like to stay again in the future.

Booked a studio for a week's break in July and it was great.Resort description said 'kitchenette' so I thought it would only be a kettle/toaster and microwave set up. But no it was a proper little kitchen. The unit was spacious with a dining table and chairs and 2 armchairs for watching TV. The window seat was a lovely spot in the sun.
Rae and Jim were great hosts and do a 'happy hour' on a Wednesday so we went along to that. Just down the road is Creel Cafe for a morning coffee. Swimming pool and spa pool on site and a games room to keep the kids entertained.

About our fourth visit and things do not change. Staff are wonderful, informative helpful but unintrusive.
Caught a few trout visited the local area and relaxed. There is such a wealth of things to in the Turangi area. We look forward to our fifth visit

We enjoyed our stay at the resort. Very quiet and peaceful. Close to the river walks which we managed to enjoy each day. Creel Cafe down the road was superb. Lovely coffee. Not a lot of restaurants open in Turangi but a very good supermarket to purchase supplies.

Hello, On our trip in August we were able to do a day trip to Napier from Turangi with not much difficulty. Most of the roads are 2 lanes but traffic was generally light and road conditions quite good. Higher elevation roads can be twisting but not overly so. The trailhead for the Mt.Tongariro crossing is about 20-30 minute drive from the lodge. Regards, Robert

We are just trying to work out what 'mini kitchen' means ie is it more than just a microwave. Thanks

Hi, depending on the unit you are allocated, we were able to make quit substantial meals in the kitchen. Definitely a lot more than a microwave and hotplate. hope it helps. Enjoy Kaimanawa and the area - it is a great place to visit.

How is the best way to travel from Auckland airport.
Answer from Bruce M
Wellington, New Zealand8 contributions4 helpful votes
Based on the assumption that you are traveling to visit the highlights and enjoy your trip , I would suggest getting a rental car at Auckland Airport, then driving down to Taupo , possibly via Rotorua. A rental car is probably the most cost effective and convenient way to go wherever you want, whenever you want, especially for 2-4 people. So you need to get the usual tourist guide books, pick what appeals to you, then head off, preferably with a GPS, and possibly a smartphone. Alternately , if you just want to go point to point on a tight schedule, you can fly direct from Auckland to Taupo. But then you would probably need a rental car to get around anyway.
