First, restaurant and setting excellent. Room a small but comfortable enough. We felt that the staff could have provided sufficient information to navigate the local activities. IFortunately, we did not take up the hotel's offer of a guide for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing (at a cost of $375 per person) ... as there were hundreds of people making the crossing, so a guide is unnecessary for most. Further, the hotel didn't explain the option to drive to the finish car park and then take a shuttle bus to the start point, which saves money and gives flexibility for finishing the walk. For a place of this quality, we would have expected a customer service culture of similar quality.

Beautiful setting by the river with easy access to town and major route from the north, excellent food and attentive staff. We went for fishing and had a extra roomy Villa all to ourselves for several days/ perfect location for hiking and fishing

We are a married couple in our early 50s and stayed at the Tongariro Lodge from 7/11 – 10/11. This was our first time staying at this property, and we were in Chalet #6. Some notes re. our stay: * Location: The property is located ~3 km from the Turangi town center and is well-marked off the SH1. The GPS on our phone guided us in with no problems. It’s a bit far to walk from the Lodge into town, but is an easy 5-minute drive. * Communication: We’d a number of questions in advance of our arrival, and the Lodge was quick to provide detailed responses to our emails. They were especially helpful in arranging a shuttle to/from The Alpine Crossing, which was of tremendous benefit. * Parking: Plenty of secure parking at the Lodge property. There is single-car parking next to each chalet, and there are a couple of “over flow” lots available. * Lodge Décor: The Lodge seems to cater to guests who are there to fish, and it is evident in the décor. Lots of old fishing poles and photos of fishermen adorn the walls, and the construction is of dark wood. There is a wood-burning fireplace in the Lodge that is very inviting. It is “rustic” as opposed to “chic” but in a tasteful manner and nothing is over the top. * Onsite Restaurant: There is a separate bar where you can get a cocktail, as well as a “formal” dining room. Reservations are encouraged, but not required. The dining room is a bit small (~15 tables), the menu is somewhat limited, and we found it a bit pricey. But the food was very good and the portions sizeable. The “breakfast room” is well lit and airy, although the menu is limited. The Lodge offers a box lunch if you are hiking The Alpine Crossing (you need to arrange this in advance), and we took advantage of it. Large meaty sandwiches with plenty of protein-based snacks (fruit, granola, etc)…very good and fairly priced. * Room: We found Chalet #6 to be cozy and plenty big. It is equipped with a queen-sized bed, a single bed (perfect to lay an open suitcase), two (2) nightstands (one on each side of the bed), and a long dresser. A sizeable TV is mounted on the wall, and there are a number of heavy blankets and extra pillows available if needed. The wardrobe is large/spacious and had plenty of room for our items. There is a “nook” as soon as you enter the Chalet which is perfect for dirty boots, hiking poles, wet gear, etc. A large sliding glass door gives way to semi-private deck that overlooks some green space and allows for plenty of natural light. The room locks with private key, and a outdoor light is helpful. There are ample outlets. There is a min refrigerator and coffee/tea-making facilities. We don’t recall seeing a safe. All of the bed linens were fresh and clean. * Bathroom: The two items most important to us in a bathroom are 1) hot water, and 2) good water pressure. Both boxes were adequately checked. The bathroom is of average size with a toilet, a vanity sink with several large drawers, a wall mirror and a towel rack mounted to the wall. The shower (no tub) had good water pressure and the aforementioned hot water was plentiful. There is a fan, and a window (that opens) allows for good natural light and fresh air. Clean, fresh towels are provided. * Grounds: Sizeable, and absolutely lovely. Lots of green space and flowers/trees. Plenty of room to stroll. There is a tennis court, although it looks in a slight state of disrepair. The property is nicely manicured and very welcoming. We were delighted with our stay at the Tongariro Lode and would not hesitate to stay here again when in the region. It is fairly priced, ideally situated, and very welcoming.

This is a 5 star lodge which caterers mainly for Trout fishing. We stayed in a 1 bedroom chalet which was spotlessly clean and a wonderful lush garden outlook. The grounds to the river was picturesque and private. We had dinner at the lodge which had a lot of pictures of trout and very happy fishermen! Definitely an experience stay

Very nice place with a perfect surrounding. A perfect place to stay to explore the Tongariro National park. The rooms was okey but a little bit cold. In the restaurant er had one if the best meal ever. The food was excellent and the waiter know a lot about wine and gave us excellent tips to match the food.

My wife and I had a (friendly) debate whether to give Tongariro lodge 4 or 5 stars - I was going for 4, she was lobbying for 5. Of course, in the end, we went for 5. We were slightly surprised by some of the reviews below - whilst the rooms are slightly functional (we were in a one room chalet) they are clean, with comfy beds and aircon/heating and USB connectors. There’s a fridge in the room and wine glasses provided. The shower is good. What really made it for us is the friendliness and enthusiasm of the young staff. Whilst some are clearly in training they all try hard to provide good service and do. The other aspect we were impressed by was the quality of the food - whilst it’s not an extensive menu (3 options for each course supplemented with some specials), the quality is good (particularly the rib eye steak and pecan dessert). There’s a good wine list and a good bar. The decor is as you’d expect a fishing/hunting lodge; dark wood and fishing trophies but it’s a comfortable lounge area. You are asked to choose breakfast options and timing the night before but again, good quality. Unfortunately it rained for much of our full day there (we were there for 2 nights) and we did notice that the larger villas have a covered veranda whereas ours didn’t - worth bearing in mind if you’re booking for a date with variable weather. If you are staying there the only other nearby restaurant within walking distance is the Hare & Copper which is closed Mon/Tues.

Room Tip: Consider a villa, depending on cost. More space and covered veranda if raining.

We had a two-bedroom villa which was perfectly located for peace and tranquility. We were only a few metres from the Tongariro River which has lots of walking tracks to follow. The kitchen was very well-equipped; the villa had three different heaters so we were always cosy and warm after tramping during the day. Plenty of towels as housekeeping is only undertaking every three days. A short drive into Turangi where there is a supermarket, bakery, petrol stations etc. Definitely recommended.

The lodge is in a cool location. You can quickly go shopping in Turangi, but you can also do a lot along the river. First of all: The hotel is really specialized in anglers. We were here because we wanted to do a few hikes in the national park and couldn't find any alternatives on booking.com. It's great - provided you have a car. At the reception one was very friendly and accommodating. The restaurant is ok, but not really recommended. To discover the national park we, as non-anglers, would rather look for another accommodation next time. We had a chalet room. It was ok but it is a little noisy - you hear what the neighbour is doing at day and at night- and the facility is a bit old fashioned.

This has been the best of our North Island stays. It has air conditioning! The food in the restaurant is excellent. The front desk staff is friendly and helpful. Our chalet is comfortable with its own deck. The bed is in good condition and the mattress is firm. It’s so lovely to hear the birds singing outside, without the sound of trains, planes or cars!

This a specialist fishing lodge. The staff are pretty unhelpful and whilst it's a nice location it's pretty much in the middle of nowhere, so when they close their bar and restaurant for the staff Christmas party it's a bit disappointing. Also very expensive for what it is, which is basically a posh garden shed. They ask you if you want juice and coffee with your breakfast then charge an extra $15 a head for it. Unless you're a very keen fisherman/woman or want to throw your money away you might be better off staying elsewhere.
