While the Macdonald Forest Hills Hotel & Spa boasts a stunning and picturesque location, the charm doesn't extend to all aspects of the stay. Travelers often describe the hotel's atmosphere as cozy but outdated, needing a breath of fresh air through renovation. The value proposition is questioned by many, with high prices not aligning with the dated and sometimes unclean rooms.
The hotel's amenities, including the spa, receive mixed reactions, often shadowed by maintenance concerns. Furthermore, the service quality disappoints, marred by reports of slow and occasionally rude staff.

The hotel is located in a beautiful green area and offers a variety of outdoor activities such as tennis and other sports facilities, which we really enjoyed. The nature around the hotel creates a relaxing atmosphere ideal for a relaxing holiday.
Unfortunately, the service at the reception is far from satisfactory. The staff seems to be poorly trained, especially when it comes to dealing with guests. It is very rude to continue conversations with colleagues while a guest is standing in front of you. Worse, even a simple "good day" while passing seems to be too much to ask – the reception didn't even greet when you walked by. Such basic courtesy should be taken for granted in a hotel. It was also never asked about our stay, which was supposed to be standard.
Another problem was communication. We wanted to cancel a table reservation and tried to do so via WhatsApp first, but no response came. When we reported this to reception, we were directed directly to the restaurant, although reception could also pass on this message. This seems disorganized and uncustomer-oriented.
Cleanliness: Cleanliness at the hotel was also disappointing. Many glass surfaces and windows were smeared or dirty, and the bathroom had mold stains on the edges of the shower. The faucet was difficult to operate and had to be tightly turned off to stop water running. Especially in the billiard room, it became apparent that cleaning had not been done for a long time – the dust was so thick that guests could write their names in it, and cobwebs were ubiquitous.
SPA: Unfortunately, I can't say anything about the spa because I refrained from visiting it due to the general cleanliness of the hotel.
Rooms: Positive was our twin room overlooking the garden. The beds were comfortable, even if they seemed a bit worn out. Fortunately, there was an elevator so we didn't have to carry our luggage.
Restaurant: Unfortunately, the restaurant does not offer a lot of food, and the ambience seems quite old-fashioned. The food and drink menus are also heavily worn out and could urgently use a replacement. It is also a pity that despite including breakfast there are considerable additional costs for certain meals. On the positive side, however, the friendly staff in the restaurant has always tried.
In summary, the hotel has potential due to its location and sporting opportunities, but the service and cleanliness urgently need improvement. Especially the handling at the reception should be more professional and polite.

This review is for the self catering apartments. Stayed in a 2 bedroom 3 bathroom with sauna and balcony lodge. The space was over two floors. The apartment was relatively well presented we thought at first. Both bedrooms had stains on the ceilings and one rusty old radiator. One bathroom had black mould above the shower. Sloppy maintenance management. However the kitchen was well stocked and the lounge comfortable with nice views from the balcony. After booking this and reading the reviews decided to give the hotel bar and catering options a miss. The breakfast charge per head is a laughable £26 per person. Once I had read the appalling breakfast reviews decided £104 for us to have a mediocre breakfast had me in the kitchen grilling sausages myself. The spa was nicely presented and someone was touching paint up in the pool area. Maybe should be sent next to the apartments? The staff I met were pleasant. It’s a really nice location to spend some time in. But the biggest irritation is the WIFI. Absolutely appalling. No mobile signal for Three or Vodaphone makes decent WIFI essential. The signal dropped in and out and no coverage whatsoever in both bedrooms. Brought my Apple TV box to access Netflix and Prime but was unwatchable. In a semi rural location with no mobile network why does this property offer such poor WIFI? Despite the criticisms above we had a relaxing few days but we wouldn’t return in the near future. If anyone from the MacDonald group is reading these reviews there clearly is massive room for improvement here!

Thank you for your review and your comments. Obviously our extreme rural location does make Wifi quite difficult, however we are currently working on trying to improve this with fast Wifi due to the area very soon, along with a new Vodafone mast in the area only yesterday has improved the phone signal considerably. We are unfortunately in such a rural location which makes reliable Wifi extremely difficult to which I apologise. Andrew Tighe General Manager

You cannot fault the location and though the facilities are somewhat worn out with peeling paint and aging decor, there’s a quaint magical quality.
The staff though were sullen, and occasionally plain rude. Breakfast had to be booked at a fixed time and, checking in late on the first day, we were told we had to come for the last sitting on both mornings (10:45!). On the Saturday we arrived promptly to find all the pastries were gone and no offer of toast was made. Even the butter was unavailable. So we arrived at 10:00 on the Sunday to find a similar story.
We ate in the restaurant one evening and the food was at best mediocre, and severely overpriced.
It was no surprise they automatically added a service charge - as they probably got tired of no one volunteering a tip. The service was slow (non-existent). At one point I asked for a serving knife so I could pick up some butter from the buffet and was told to “wait there!”. After standing like a mug for 10minutes, I left. If that was one isolated incident fair enough - but it was sadly typical of our whole experience. 4* for venue, 0* for service.

Absolutely rubbish place. Over priced breakfast. Most of the items not available, £16 per person and one egg served, only vegan saugses were good. Completely bare cold section, upon asking cold bread served, not toasted. A real joke. No WiFi in the hotel, forget the lodge area. Dark, non lit pathways, could be scary and dangerous to walk. No clearly lit signages to find the lodge numbers or names for that matter. Strong advice don't stay here, staff, food and services absolutely cold, place is very dark especially winter nights. Only good thing is the reception lady Nora, who took our checkin. Free of cost advice for management: increase solar lightings there, particularly make it easy for guests to find the rooms.

Thank you for your review and your feedback, Apologies over the Wifi, this was an external problem which led to the outage. With regards to the lighting, there is lamps on all the pathways to all apartments, all entrance ways are lit, signs are lit around the resort, and at check in all guests are given a map of the Resort along with instructions on how to get to your apartment, our apologies if this was not sufficient for you. I last visited and stayed in one of the self catering apartments nearly 40 years ago, I don't think the accommodation has changed at all in that time, the furniture, decor, fittings and appliances are all aged and of a 30 + year vintage. There may have been periodic coats of paint applied, but the accommodation and common areas are all dated, tired and there is a feeling of general 'grubbiness'. I reckon its overdue the time for Macdonald Hotels to make a major investment or sell the facility to a Company willing to invest. The location is nevertheless stunning, there are just a couple of outstanding staff - the male and female restaurant Maire D's working on New Years Eve are worth a mention, and the only other positive I can mention is the soft landscaping is well maintained, otherwise the list of disrepair, fault, poor service and decrepit fixtures and fittings is too long to start listing.

the setting is awesome, the views spectacular, staff where friendly, helpful and kind, unfortunately the hotel is very much lacking in critical detail, take your own booze ! the keys to rooms fit others rooms and open them, the drink is way beyoned inflation, it really is verging on robbery , the spa sauna wasnt working, the shower at pool doesnt work, the lockers are an operational nightmare the door to pool from changing area jambs causing me a minor injury, glasses where left in hall way for 3 days despite staff walking by, room wasnt serviced, you can buy the same bottle of presecco or wine in the co op aberfoyle for £8 the sell for £34 with a smile, the food as in cooked breakfast isint fit for consumption the chef needs trained on how not to cook sub standard meat. i hope the manager realises this place is teetering on the edge of falling in to real disrapute ,the lift in the main hotel does not work safely and indeed stopped working, the room wasnt serviced despite leavingnotice to do so and when approached the lady couldnt speak english, unfortunately there is a real lack of hospitality area manager or macdonalds hq should address these issues asap or your going to lose custom a bit of tlc is required here and traing staff or paying them shouldnt come at the cost of a bad expierence, if you choose the delux suite be very carefull on decking balcony it feels like is ready to collapse, sorry

My sister and I booked a one night stay including use of the leisure facilities, a twin room, dinner and bed and breakfast. We were told we could leave our bags with reception until check in at 3 so we thought we’d arrive early and go to the spa for a few hours first. We didn’t know where the spa was or how it worked so we went to reception and we’re abruptly and rudely told “girls you’re far too early, we’ve barely even finished checking out”. We were told to come back so we said we were planning on going to the spa first but didn’t know where this was or what the details of signing in were. Thankfully a nicer lady at reception let us know it’s across the car park and we can just sign in there. The spa itself is poorly managed and is barely a spa. It includes use of a communal pool, one small hot tub, a sauna and steam room. There were only five loungers too. The family time for the pool is all day, there is only one hour first thing in the morning and one hour before it closes without kids. The facilities are basic and run down and the changing rooms leave a lot to be desired. We spent two hours here as it isn’t clear if you can use the relaxation room or recreational rooms either, the staff explain nothing. We headed back to check in and were told dinner was booked for 6pm at the on site Garden restaurant which includes a £25 per person allocation. The room was lovely and the grounds of the hotel are stunning! The restaurant is traditional and a lovely setting but the food quality for the prices isn’t worth it. We ordered food for around £36 in total (we only ordered a main each) so we could get a drink using the remainder of our allowance. We weren’t told the drinks were not included in this allowance or we would have ordered a desert to use this up. The staff were lovely but clearly rushed off their feet. We had breakfast the next morning which was okay but the hot food was lacklustre for the price and the continental offering wasn’t clearly communicated and offered no toast - apparently you order this separately although they offer bread in the continental selection. When we checked out were given a £20 bill on top of what we had already paid for the liquor we thought was included in our £50 allowance, they also had a service and charity charge here too. The same woman served us here and was dissmissive and uninterested yet again. Overall, lovely grounds and scenery but could do with a major overhaul and improvements on the “spa” - which should really be advertised as a luxury pool. Not worth the price unless just going for an overnight stay.

Thank you for taking the time to write your detailed review which we value. I am a little confused over your comments regarding the Spa being barely a Spa, although you mention about a hot tub, sauna, steam room, in addition we have a tropical rain shower poolside, as you have pointed out though we do only have 5 loungers due to space poolside. We are a family resort, hence the all day for kids being allowed in the pool, and we are also in school holiday season therefore more children are at the Resort. For clarity, the dinner allocation does only include food, this is like all hotels and would never include drinks, and is common practice around the UK. Once again, we do value all of your feedback though Andrew

We have just had a wonderful week touring around Scotland, staying a various hotels from a 5 star in Kelso to no star (which was brilliant) on the Ardnamurchan peninsular. Unfortunately we also stayed for one night in the Macdonald Forest Hills Hotel & Spa. But we won’t let this spoil our memory of the holiday.
The shame is that the building and gardens are wonderful, but …
This hotel is being badly let down by the hotel’s general manager - the one person who will invariably blame staff members below them for anything and everything.
As I said it’s a shame as individually all the staff we met were really nice and helpful – especially Joe the waiter.
We are also in the hospitality business and know that it may take some time and effort to turn a business around and it “must” start at the top.
There is obviously no sense of team in this hotel and THIS is what needs sorting out: everyone working toward one aim.
The housekeeping dept are, obviously, not talking to the maintenance staff. The front of house service dept are, obviously, not talking to the kitchen staff, etc.
Again this can only be addressed properly by the hotel’s general manager. But as it, obviously, hasn’t happened in the past, you have to ask “will it change now”.
We won’t be going back.
Why, well to start with (see photos) maintenance team stuffing toilet tissue into broken trickle vents in the windows (available from B&Q for £3.95). The housekeeping staff not reporting broken cisterns or cracked toilets.
The entire kitchen staff from the person who chooses which vegetables to cook, to the chef who cooks them and the waiters who serve them, all need to start talking to each other. Any one of those people could have said “we can’t serve that”. It is simply unacceptable to serve unwashed and rotten food at any time. Why didn’t any of them say “we can’t accept that “, “we can’t cook that”, “we can’t serve that”. But none of them did.
The general manager of this hotel, by their inaction, is letting down not only the hotel’s customers, the staff and the owners but also the entire Macdonald Hotel brand.
Oh and when the breakfast menu says “mushrooms” we did expect for at least two (as mushrooms is plural) . What we didn’t expect was Half a mushroom hidden under a fried egg (you couldn’t make it up as no one would believe you). I know times are hard for the hotel industry, but come on, isn’t cutting mushrooms in half and serving each half to a different person a bit over the top?

From the moment my wife and I arrived, we recognised why other visitors who had written reviews were unhappy with the service they had got from the staff. Three members of staff talking amongst themselves at reception without acknowledging our presence. "Will be with you in a moment" would have sufficed. The room we were allocated was spacious and we had no complaints with it apart from a hairline crack in the sink and some paintwork restoration required. However, it was not the room that "myhotelbreak.com" said they booked for us. We had requested a room with a walk in shower because of health problems. "Myhotelbreak.com" rang me to say that they had managed to get one for us but the hotel staff told us on arrival they had no rooms in the hotel with that type of shower. That night, we went to the lounge bar for a drink and it was noticeable how difficult it was for residents to get served due to the absence of staff. On a number of occasions, customers queued at the bar and hotel staff walked by them and did nothing. In the evening, we went for dinner in the hotel dining room and the food was excellent although pricey and service slow. The staff were much friendlier during dinner than we experienced across our stay. In the morning we went for breakfast and it was the worst breakfast we have experienced for a long time. The 2 main dishes were part of our deal but the others such as Salmon and Scrambled Egg, and Eggs Benedict came with a £7 Supplement. The food was greasy and the coffee weak. The Continental Fayre was poor with what looked like tinned Fruit Salad as the main fruit option. There were small jars which contained the remnants of marmalade and jams. When I asked for the marmalade jar to be filled up, the waitress was rude and shouted "what" at me. We did not try any of the leisure facilities due to our health issues so I have not reduced my rating to below a 3 Star as that would be unfair. Also, I recognise the hotel is in a great place for more adventurous tourists and nature lovers. Nevertheless, we came to celebrate our wedding anniversary and left feeling very disappointed. A cheery greeting on arrival and during other contact between staff and customers would make a world of difference.

As it has been a few years since we were last here we were concerned about some of the reviews but we were pleasantly surprised.
We were staying in 2 ‘oak’ lodges which were both clean and comfortable.
Our stay was during the school ‘October week’ but the Rafters bar/restaurant was closed which was disappointing so we had to eat/drink more in our apartment than we have done in previous visits.
The pool/leisure facilities were good, though the ‘new’ changing rooms (significant investment maybe 7/8 years ago) have been allowed to fall apart and haven’t been well maintained. (Tiles hanging off the wall, shower units ripped out the wall with exposed screws, ceilings damp and water damaged due to broken ventilation) - they had screwed perspex over the tiles to hold them in place whilst it would take a tiler less than a day to strip the wall and repair it properly!) however, it was functional.
The main hotel is still nicely decorated in the public areas and comfortable, though it could use a coat of paint to freshen it up.
The gardens are nicer than they have been in our previous visits so the gardeners have definitely improved and the grounds are looking fab.
One thing to note is that the number of off-lead dogs is significant. I didn’t see any signs encouraging lead use. IMO dog owners should not be exercising their dogs off-lead in the gardens and should be on lead. There are plenty of other nearby public areas to walk dogs off lead.
We ate at the hotel garden restaurant and whilst it was expensive it was of good quality & we had a delicious meal with great service from the staff. I think some of the negative reviews of the restaurant based on price are because the cheaper ‘rafters’ restaurant (which still isn’t cheap) isn’t open. I feel rafters bar would be busier & more viable if they lowered the price point as the resort is certainly busy enough to fill the bar and the price can be the only barrier imo. Perhaps a ‘happy hour’ or something would be a good idea to attract people there. Having only their ‘premium’ restaurant available is definitely a detractor for the resort.
During our holiday the staff were all very pleasant and trying their best to satisfy their customers. I hope the new management are able to get Forest Hill’s back to what it was in the past.
Overall we had a great family holiday and hope to come back again the future.

Our apartment in Red Maple did have wifi connection and it did allow email, WhatsApp etc. It was not tested with online gaming but I doubt it’s capacity to meet the needs of teenagers.
Mobile phone reception is also very poor on O2 and some other services. We have to drive into Aberfoyle (4 miles away) to receive phone messages. Enjoy the countryside and take games with you!
I found the hotel staff were very pleasant and sincerely tried to help us. Unfortunately We booked over Christmas and the hotel was at near capacity so not much they could do. Our stay was booked through RCI which limits what rooms we could stay in. We were not in the main hotel, we were in the Spruce lodge. If staying there I’d recommend the staying in the main hotel building. The 2 units we stayed in, were in the spruce lodge. Both had very old furnishings and quite dirty. We left on Christmas Day after only 4 nights of a one week booking.
There are more places to choose from in the Kinlochard area.
