Friends and I recently bunked down at the Commercial Hotel in Whakatane and were most impressed with the genuine friendliness of the owners and staff. A neat place to stay, cheap too, and very handy to the inner town. We would happily stay there again. And we know that when we do we will be greeted like old friends.

If you want four or five star hotel please dont stay here. If you want really good value for money, ensuite basic rooms and very helpful staff this is the place for you. It is a hotel/pub and downstairs they have a good selection of drinks and pub grub...free coffee and tea in the bar, undercover parking round the back and a communal kitchen upstairs make this the place to stay for those on a budget. The staff are very friendly and helpful. We only paid sixty dollars for a double room as opposed to one hundred and sixty dollars for another nearby hotel that we also had one night in. Town centre is a very short walk away with numerous restaurants and cafes. It is also a couple of minutes walk from the White Island boat trip pier.GWEive it a try, you wont be dissapointed.

Stayed here while travelling solo for my 18th Birthday and couldn't have had a better experience! Room was comfortable and had it's own bathroom which I didn't expect at $40 per night! As it was above a pub I expected it to be noisey but found it pleasantly quiet. It has a shared kitchen upstairs so you can do your own cooking instead of eat out. The kitchen isn't just a microwave and a kettle either, while I was there a family made an entire Indian food smorgasbord! The staff were friendly and very down to earth. It's nice and close to shopping and the Count Down (Woolworths Supermarket). It's also very close to PJ's White Island Tours which was my reason for making the trek to Whakatane. Overall I likely how homely and safe it was which is important when you do your first solo travel!
